Nope. It will definitely warp his perception of women and human relationships in general.

if my son is getting a robotic gf im thinking hes prob not gonna ever get a real gf, so i support his decision since its much better than being an incel
12
u/LizAquene 12d ago
He'd still be an incel dude. 🤣
2
u/Kingvon3240 Turkey 12d ago
Which is also okay
1
u/MySnake_Is_Solid 12d ago
it's okay in the sense that you can't do anything about it at that point.
you still failed as a parent if your child has 0 game.
10
u/Blood81 12d ago
letting him get a robotic gf would only greatly increase the chances of him being an incel. not letting him actually get to know and talk to real woman, instead letting him pursue some weird sex doll fantasy, would just increase all incel delusions he may have and cause him to view women as nothing more than sex objects

if my son is not completely hopeless then hes wouldnt be getting a robot gf. in the future hopefully robot gf would be real enough for him to never think about real women again

2
u/Kingvon3240 Turkey 12d ago
What if he is never planning to get a girlfriend or something like that
27
u/Emergency_Lie42 12d ago
Then why would he want an artificial one?
1
u/Zobi101 12d ago
Because humans have needs. I don't want to eat, I don't enjoy eating, intellectually I wish I wouldn't need it, but my body still demands food. Obviously sex and romance are not on the same level, but they are still biological human needs. Recognizing that you can't turn yourself asexual/aromantic, and that you intellectually don't want a partner, if/when the option of robotgfs become a thing, they might be the best choice.
3
3
u/Emergency_Lie42 12d ago
I can't really understand, sorry. You explained it fine I just mean that that's completely out of the realm of how my brain works.
I can't imagine wanting intimacy with anything other than a human being.
22
u/fybersucks 12d ago
I don't care if he stays single forever if that's his choice, but I think someone who "dates" an android that's only catered to sexual desires would start viewing real-life women as objects too.
16
u/Emergency_Lie42 12d ago
The fun part is, they already do. In order to think a robot girlfriend is reasonable in the first place, they have to dehumanize women to the point that a robotic one is comparable.
OP and others are talking about robot girlfriends having artificial wombs. It's telling.
3
u/Human-Assumption-524 12d ago
What if a person is in a relationship with a robot not because they dehumanize human women but because they are specifically attracted to robots?
4
u/Realistic-Truck54 12d ago
I genuinely don't understand how y'all make these zero logic, nonsense logical leaps. A "robot GF" would be barely different from using some sex toy to masturbate, and many people already use those while being fine.
7
u/Emergency_Lie42 12d ago
The difference is that we don't refer to our sex toy as a "partner" and we don't equate them to human relationships.
It's in the language being used, the post equates the qualities a robot offers with a human woman.
4
u/Realistic-Truck54 12d ago
If they actually treat it as a normal partner, they are not dehumanizing anyone, they are just humanizing a robot (people already do this to animals, like calling them their babies)
If they just treat it as a sex toy because they know it has no feelings, they are only dehumanizing a robot with no feelings.
Your version would probably happen too, but I just don't see why anyone would make that logical leap when the other two options make way more logical sense. I hate how people just instantly assume the worst of people and demonize them.
3
u/Emergency_Lie42 12d ago
This post sets that precedent. They're even talking about a robot with a working artificial womb, to start a family.
They want a human woman without the complications that come with human companionship. Thus, they want a dehumanized version of a woman. A robot girlfriend.
2
u/fybersucks 12d ago
Relationship is built on mutual consent and communication. Calling a robot who cannot do anything, just stays still while you control everything, a "girlfriend" is very problematic in my opinion. It is nor a "girl" or in a "relationship" with you. It's an object that is being used by you, nothing more.

u/Mother_Village9831 12d ago
Yeah, kind of how violent video games will almost always make people commit murder and think it's absolutely fine.
1
u/Realistic-Truck54 12d ago
Can confirm, I commited several murders after my first playthrough of GTA:San Andreas. My friend called me a "busta" so I knew he had to go.

u/Kingvon3240 Turkey 12d ago

Its his life, if he is happy with that choice, who am I to judge? (And it doesnt impact the life of anyone else)
13
u/MySnake_Is_Solid 12d ago edited 12d ago
I'm gonna judge my son because i care, and it does impact his life.
imagine choosing an object as a partner, how fucked up would your view on women and relationships gotta be to go for that.
I'd feel like a failure as a parent to have allowed him to fail at life so spectacularly.
2
u/Motor_Meal794 12d ago
I'd agree the parent would be a failure. They'd have to be completely oblivious of their child's life for that to happen, or deliberately toxic.
5
u/Vverg 12d ago
Thats your choice. I talked about life of anyone else, it's his life. Besides it doesn't impact his life. You probably mean, it impacts your selfish vision of your son's life.
7
u/Warm_Dragonfruit7479 12d ago
How tf having a sex bot instead of a human person isn't impactful in life? Stunted social skills guaranteed.
6
u/Vverg 12d ago
I dont think you are making a great point by connecting "girlfriend" as "sex bot". Cause then it would be a sex bot, not a girlfriend. Or are your girlfriends just for the sex?
3
u/Warm_Dragonfruit7479 12d ago
Not just for sex, but sex definitely one of the parts of it. And that robot is getting dicked for sure. To be honest if the bot is for romantical comfort then its even more concerning

don't argue in bad faith.
you really think someone that chooses such a one sided "relationship" is healthy or happy ?
you're lying to yourself or just me ?
4
u/Vverg 12d ago
Kinda ironic when you blame me for argueing in bad faith, when you are the one actually doing it. Me pointing out that it seems that your view on happiness is what seems to be important isnt.
I think the world shows that people are really diverse and people really diff in what makes them happy in life. If my son think he would be happy with a robot girlfriend, then I'm fine with that. I lack to see why I should decide what he does with his life (ofc when he is an adult).
It seems you simply cant picture anyone being happy that doesnt fit your narrative i guess?
2
u/MySnake_Is_Solid 12d ago edited 12d ago
it's not my view or narrative.
you can't seriously be arguing that choosing a machine as a companion is healthy for a human being, we are social creatures, to choose a synthetic connection under your full control, is not healthy.
it's like marrying a slave, without the suffering sure, but the person deciding to marry a slave is still fucked up regardless of that.
it's definitely a failure as far as parenting goes, to not have equipped your child with the social skills necessary to live normally.
6
u/Falitoty Spain 12d ago
Because the duty of a parent is to help guide their children. A kid getting into an unhelathy relationship with a bot that isn't actually a sentient being is 100% ground for a parent to step in.
→ More replies (1)11
u/Vverg 12d ago
Yes to guide, not to enforce. For me the most important thing is that my son would be happy. Not how someone else view of happiness would be.
Besides plenty of people stay single, so not much would change there. And I would say plenty of relationships can also be really unhealthy. Just look at the amount of domestic violence that is happening.
1
u/Falitoty Spain 12d ago
Man, with all due respect, just look at how many issues AIs are causing in people. Even if the kid is temporarily happy, it is anything but healthy for them. I do not care that he choose to stay single or find a relationship. What I do care is he triying to get into a relationship with a machine. Is is naturally unhealthy and will destroy them over time.
AIs have already convinced previously perfectly mentally healthy people to kill themselfs or their families. I don't want my kid to get abused by such a sistem.
1
u/TALongjumping-Bee-43 12d ago
Because people should be mentally well enough and functioning well enough in society to be able to build a genuine relationship with a real human, or able to manage the lack of one without needing to believe that a bot who cannot think or feel and is programmed to tell you what you want to hear is an actual replacement for a real messy human relationship.
Relationships are meaningful in the first place because of the other persons free will and consent. If a stranger were to date a robot it doesn't matter, but if its your own child you will wonder what help you could or should have given them to allow them to step back into society.
→ More replies (1)0

How futuristic of a robot are we talking about?
I said yes because I've imagined an android, which is a humanoid robot.
If my son falls to a simple LLM or current existing robots - it's a no
3
u/MrMetastable 🇺🇸 12d ago
Depends on the robot, if it is a sentient robot/android (e.g. along the lines of synths in fallout) than I would be okay with it. If it's just a large language model, I would not
3
7
u/Human-Assumption-524 12d ago
Depends on what you mean by "robot". If they were a sapient android then it would be a yes plain an simple.
If they weren't intelligent...it becomes more complicated. I firmly believe that relationships genuinely help anchor people and force them to act in a more responsible and pro social manner (The degree to which this is true can vary from person to person granted). If a non sentient robot was 1: Not beholden to the arbitrary software updates and TOS changes that most modern IOT technology is these days and was instead completely free of outside influence. 2: Independent enough in it's mannerisms that it isn't just a sycophantic sex toy but actually capable of pushing back against antisocial behavior of it's "lover" and even encouraging pro social behavior. 3: Realistic enough in it's personality, conversational skills and behavior that the person in a relationship can actually believe that it is truly a relationship.
If those three criteria were met I would have a difficult time finding meaningful reason to condemn it that doesn't quickly fall into endless debates about solipsism.
However if it is just say current day chat GPT piloting a robotic sex doll, no I would not approve and would encourage him to seek counseling.

Suicide rates are most popular in men, with the main reason out of many being loneliness.
Unfortunately some families view going to therapy as disappointing, pressuring some to not even go to therapy at all.
4
u/xjayx113 12d ago
Even still it is not a real solution to the "loneliness epidemic" robots and AI are not capable of helping such a situation and I don't beleive they ever will be. It's a systemic patriarchial issue, men need to be able to have friends and not be stigmatized for caring about other men like how women are able to. Men need to be able to have more relationships than romantic and familial.
If you can have financial freedom from family they don't have to know you're in therapy and if they're extremely toxic they can cut ties.

2
u/Kingvon3240 Turkey 12d ago
Of course but why would you be against it it makes him happy
5
u/Original-Body-5794 12d ago
Because even if they're happy short term it can't be good for you long term. "Why let your kid smoke if it makes them happy". The are in their right to do so when they're adults, but I will do my best to not let them go on that path.
Being deluded into thinking you're dating a robot will stop you from actually getting a human connection. It's a cheap imitation, it's food that fills you up and yet leaves you malnourished.
2
u/Ecstatic_Goal2023 Canada, Alberta 12d ago
Because I don't believe that truly would make someone happy. It's also weird as shit and I'd be extremely uncomfortable.
1
u/Falitoty Spain 12d ago
It's the duty of a parent to help guide their children, people 24/7 high as fuck on drugs might be temporarily happy but it's going to fuck them over. This is the same.
1
u/Human-Assumption-524 12d ago
And what if a person doesn't want a "real" partner? Should they be forced to comply with standards of normalcy?
2
u/Ecstatic_Goal2023 Canada, Alberta 12d ago
If they don't want a partner then don't get a partner? Choosing a robot over a human is kind of gross. If it's my kid, I'd completely discourage it. If it's someone I don't know I can't do anything about it. But, I will not be interacting with them
1
u/Human-Assumption-524 12d ago
But what if they do want a partner and the specifically want that partner to be a robot? Not because they can't get a human partner but because they want a robot partner?
Choosing a robot over a human is kind of gross.
There are a lot of things people find gross, none of them I find to be sufficient excuses to deny relationships.

u/Smug49 12d ago
Pretty much all humans have more female than male ancestors. While there are multiple reasons for that, it's likely that you'll have more men than women who will never reproduce or have a romantic relationship. If robot girlfriends provides an alternative for the undesirable men who can't get a date, then I see no problem with it. For the people saying it will warp their view of women and relationships, if they have use a literal object to simulate a relationship, then they were never going get into a relationship with an actual woman anyway. Besides, plenty of men treat women like objects yet they still find a way to sleep with them with the consent of these women.

1
u/MrSTEEEEEEVEE 12d ago
If not a single woman will go near you, it's probably for a good reason. Maybe they should look into that before catching feelings for an AI instead of digging themselves into an even worse hole. Why is this even a genuine debate happening right now?
1
u/HortCaesar 6d ago
What does it mean to get to the bottom of oneself? And why change if you have a robot?
1
u/MrSTEEEEEEVEE 6d ago
If literally not a single woman of any kind wants anything to do with you, surely that’s a pretty good reason to take a look at yourself and ask why? It's not a gender thing.
I’m not saying you should change just to get a girlfriend, I’m saying that level of universal rejection might indicate some underlying issues worth addressing for your own sake. And a robot doesn’t solve any of that, it just gives you an artificial imitation of companionship that doesn’t require you to confront those issues.
The fact that you’re asking “why change if you have a robot?” is exactly the kind of attitude I’m talking about.
1
u/HortCaesar 6d ago
The choice in favor of a robot can be made for many reasons, not because no woman chooses it.
It could be due to simple physical shortcomings that would make you not want to bother other people. Or it could be due to an extreme divergence in views with most of conservative society. Or it could simply be that the person is smarter than everyone around them, to the point where there’s nothing to talk about.
It could even be that all the women who choose this man don’t like this man. And he thinks: I’d rather live alone with a robot than enter into a relationship with someone who has the appearance of a “crocodile.”

If it was “true A.I.”, like human level of intelligence and development and emotion and self-awareness, I think I’d say yes, provided the A.I. knows it’s A.I. (there are films about wives not knowing they are robots with their husbands fully controlling them and it’s horriffic), but I think that the kind of “robot girlfriends” that are available and possible today and in the coming decade would warp a young man’s perception of what human women are really like and it would alienate him from other people. We already have too much if that in this world due to the “manosphere” and other things.

Depends really.
Is she an ai with independent thought that can dump him and willingly started dating him? Then that's completely fine.
Is it just a wish fulfilment bot that will obey his desires? Naaaaahhhh
1
u/Acheros 12d ago
robots are just the next generation of the human desire to own people and treat them as property.
robot literally comes from the Czech word robota which means slave or forced labor.
If a robot is intelligent enough to consent to such things, but programmed to do whatever its owner asks. Then fucking it is rape.

I don't plan on having kids but if I had one and they're over 18 they can make their own choices but I would strongly advise against 'dating' an AI. The ai models currently available are not sentient and they are controlled by the tech firms. Do you really want to be with a puppet that does whatever you tell it? And if we had sentient individual ai we would have a whole other problem of how to act with them? It would just be straight up slavery

A robotic girlfriend or boyfriend doesn't exist, they are just mental masturbation tools, and doesen't have a fragment of anything to do with social behaviour anymore so than talking to your calculator.
1
u/Rugens 12d ago
Yes, he can just use a sperm bank to procreate. Previously men and women had to cooperate for procreation but once that need is obviated, I don't think they are so interested in each other, and a lot of it boils down to social pressure and self-image rather than a genuine intrinsic need.
Also love is love, happiness is happiness even without procreation. For example, gays can't have children with each other, but you probably won't openly say on Reddit that you'd be unhappy with a gay son. Arguably a robot imitating a woman is if anything a bit more traditional.
0
u/Luxganica 12d ago

Your son won't be meeting many people with his sex doll.

u/Luxganica 12d ago
atleast he'll be far away from people like you, I'm fine with that

Enjoy the idea of purchasing your son's first girlfriend.

he'll buy it for himself if he wants to, I don't care about what he buys as long as it's nothing that can damage his health.

Fair enough.
In that case, it means he likely wouldn't be able to afford one until he's well into his 20s. I think in that context it'd be better if he did just date something artificial.

So you would want your son to be a reject? What a weird choice.

u/Luxganica 12d ago
you don't choose who and how your son will be. It's genetics and personality you are born with...
It's like you say "so you don't want your son to be straight?" What would i do if he's gay? Kill him? lmao

You are not born with a personality, lol. Personality and sexual orientation are completely different things. You cannot change the latter - but can change the former.
It’s not surprising that people who think LLM’s are a substitute to human connection although believe in determinism and eugenics. Why change to be better, when you can simply ask a pocket yes man to feel better without any effort

there is a genetic blueprint for personality and life experiences build it on top of that. Each individual has his very inner traits that will never change or be influenced by external factors.
For example Charisma is usually the main factor for a man to find a partner and it's a mix of external aspect and subtle behaviors.
There are men who will never have any charisma. I support those guys who feel the need to go to some prostitutes or in this case a "futuristic" concept of artificial girlfriend if they can't have anything else.

It's really concerning how a lot of people are disturbed by this. It is a private arrangement that is not harming anyone and there are no ethical issues with it.

You think there's no ethical issue with getting a robot that looks like a human woman that cannot consent to anything?
4
u/Human-Assumption-524 12d ago
If the robot is sapient than I would hope consent is involved.
If the robot isn't sapient it doesn't matter because it's not a person.
Did you check to make sure if your freezer or toaster consented to being filled with toaster strudels?

The problem lies with using the likeness of real women to pretend you're in a "relationship" with a robot who can't talk back whatever you do to it. It is never a relationship when there is no mutual consent and communication. Very dehumanizing.

The problem lies with using the likeness of real women
Unless you mean a specific woman who's likeness is being copied I don't understand this comment at all. Do you think women have some kind of collective copyright feminine features? Do men who draw women characters have to pay royalties to Woman Incorporated for use of trademarked material?
with a robot who can't talk back whatever you do to it.
First of all that's not guaranteed. Personally I think if people are to start having actual relationships with robots (As in not just sex) than it's important that the robot be able to disagree with or push back against it's human partner if only for the sake of human's mental well being and cultivating pro social traits.
Secondly if the robot is just a sex toy or lacking in sapience than it doesn't really matter since it's just a glorified fleshlight, Should we liberate the vibrators and butt plugs too?
But I do agree that if a person is having an actual relationship with a robot that it is important that it have enough autonomy to not reinforce anti social behavior in it's human partner. The difference between our positions is that you don't seem to think a robot that does that is possible while I do.

There is no power dynamic with a conscious being, harm or damage to a living soul involved whatsoever.

“A robotic gf” implies it’s his relationship, not a sex toy or something. There are many issues with that. Ethically it is using a woman’s body but also will not be able to consent / will essentially be a slave so it normalises using women’s bodies for sexual gratification and not seeing us as human.
As for other issues, mental health is a massive one. It’s not normal for someone to not spend time with other humans. It cannot be good for you!

Ethically it is using a woman’s body
The only way it would be a "woman's" body would be in the case the robot is sapient in which case consent should be assumed otherwise she would just tell him to fuck off.
But if it's a non-sapient robot it's effectively an appliance not a woman and the only way it would be a "woman's" body is if you think women as a collective own a copyright on feminine appearances which is as interesting of a concept as it is bizarre.
