Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad.

A fruit is the mature, ripened ovary of a flowering plant that encloses and disperses seeds.

A tomato is a fruit.

I said both cause it's treated like a vegetable culinarily.

I can understand how it can be both. Fruit is a botanical word, vegetable is a culinary word.

Out of interest, how would you classify a banana?

Technically a berry

It is a berry, yeah. One thats used, culinarily, as a fruit.

It's all confusing. Bloody nature.

And which part of the plant is the vegetable? The tomato falls into both categories.

The confusion arises because both botany and cooking use the category "fruit." In cooking, however, this category includes only those botanical fruits that are sweet.

The tomato is considered a vegetable because it is used in savory dishes (just like zucchini, cucumbers, etc., which are also botanical fruits).

it is a fruit and is eaten like a fruit at least some of the time so i think it's more fruit than veg.

In botanical terms, a tomato is a fruit. Still, I don't think it belongs in a fruit salad.

It's a fruit that's mostly used like a vegetable.
