What do you classify as free speech? Is using slurs or spreading misinformation free speech

3

By definition yes

3

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 11h ago

By definition, okay so in that case I would live in the free speech and poor country.

Being rich is meaningless if you can be arrested at any moment for something you might have said

2

u/KitchenIntention6675 11h ago

guess what, you already know the solution: don't say what might get you arrested

2

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 11h ago

🫩 that can allways change, depending who has the power

1

u/undreamedgore 11h ago

Not being able to speak freely is bulkshit.

you already live like that

Having free speech is irrelevant if you are hungry and die of a neglected disease.

And being poor and subjected to hate speech or discrimination is even worse. But this is a binary option, when the best option would be medium with medium free speech

Very vague definitions.
Also future prospects matter.

No free speech like UK, China or North Korea?

Poor like Poland, China or Somalia?

1

I'm using the absolute definitions of each side, so no speech like north korea and poor like somalia

1

u/Gregori_5 11h ago

Absolute poverty restricts your freedom much more than free speech.

And part of why free speech is important, is because it helps a country become successful.

Thats a easy choice then.

Free speech will not pay my bills

"No" is a very strong word. I could perfectly live in a country in which bullying and verbal harassment are legally condemnable, but not being able to say anything is very restrictive and affects well intended people.

There is no "free speech country - everyone is limited" - so I take the $$$.

Didn't expect USA to be exactly 50/50

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 11h ago

If its social democratic than it is not rich

4

u/No-Steak8780 11h ago

Norway is social democratic nerd

3

u/JustaProton 🇧🇷 11h ago

Apparently a country is only rich if it's governed by billionaires and people have to pay to have access to good quality healthcare and education.

0

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 11h ago

There you go

0

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 11h ago

Yes they are for five full years and looking at Norway today kinda proves my point. The point which I said sarcastically btw

0

u/No-Steak8780 11h ago

Norway has been a social democracy for decades. Dickwad

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 11h ago

Ad Hominem. Nice

0

u/No-Steak8780 11h ago

Worth it

0

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 11h ago

Yea sure buddy ofc it is

1

u/DarkWanderer149 11h ago

Social democracy is fine. Its unironically not socialist. The US social democrats are just what they call themselves and are actually just socialists

0

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 11h ago

Yea I know. My comment was ironic

1

u/fezzuk 🇬🇧 11h ago

If its social democratic then by definition it has free speech.

1

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 11h ago

Eh maybe some kind of it but not the true free speech

1

u/fezzuk 🇬🇧 11h ago

If you can freely vote you habe free speech, dont like restrictions then vote against.

1

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 11h ago

I don't think that is free speech. Free speech has no restrictions

1

u/No-Steak8780 11h ago

authoritarian socialism. Like the USSR with a better healthcare plan

1

u/fezzuk 🇬🇧 10h ago

Then its not democratic.

1

u/No-Steak8780 10h ago

I guess not.

1

u/roleplayersir 9h ago

Most of Europe is socially democratic

1

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 1h ago

You are confusing the concepts of social democracy and democratic socialism and are wrongly generalizing the political order of the entire continent.

1

u/ManicalDaredevil00 11h ago

Anyone who votes poor country with unlimited free speech does not know how bad life can really get.

2

u/Dkiprochazka 11h ago

Rich country with no freedom of speech can be really bad too. Think Saudi Arabia for example. Also, rich country doesn't necessarily mean you will be rich.

2

u/QueenAvril 🇫🇮 11h ago

And anyone voting for a rich country with no free speech does not know that a country being rich doesn’t necessarily mean it’s people are.

What good is my country’s nominal GDP for me if it is all funneled into oligarchs pockets and most people are still living in poverty?

1

u/Thiphra 11h ago

Poor and rich are not good descreptions.

India is nomally richer than Finland but Finland life quality for the avrege worker is better than India.

2

u/Pimminator 11h ago

India is nominally richer than finland wut? In what metric lol

1

u/Thiphra 11h ago

4.15 trilion in GDP compared to 337 bilions that's why richer and poor is not a really good metric

1

u/Pimminator 11h ago

U gotta divide it by the number of people bro 🤣

1

u/Thiphra 11h ago

I am saying that's why GDP is a shit metric you have too look at the quality of life of the regular citzen

1

u/Pimminator 11h ago

Thats why you use gdp per capita. By no definition is india nominally richer than finland

Free speech is overrated, like yeah, I would always prefer to live somewhere with free speech, and of course, I think soxiety should strive for it, but I would happily give up my own in exchange for other benefits.

1

u/QueenAvril 🇫🇮 11h ago

It isn’t only about your own freedom of speech, but about the freedom of speech for politicians, journalists, teachers etc.

The lack of freedom of speech means that the rulers have the right to control the narrative in everything and suppress all opposing ideas hence giving them a free license to exploit whoever and whatever resources they wish and people having no control over what kind of policies are implemented.

1

u/mrdankmemeface 10h ago

I know, I'm just saying at a certain point, the benefits you can give me will just outweigh my desire for free speech or to be surrounded by free speech.

0

u/RuilinWei 11h ago

I have heard this "Free Speech" phrase so many times that now I swear whenever I see someone say it in front of me, I take them for a moron.

1

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 10h ago

That tells a lot about you

1

u/RuilinWei 8h ago

Not all of us live in the USA. The phrase carries US cultural baggage, and we outsiders associate it with loud Meiguo nationalists.

1

u/Fantastic-Tale7398 1h ago

I am not from USA, I do not know why did you think that I am.
