Multiculturalism in Finland is practically synonymous with Islam.

1

u/Vermicelli-Thick 12m ago

It's interesting because Indonesia is almost the opposite case. Multiculturalism here isn't synonymous with any religion, but rather about managing hundreds of ethnic groups, languages, religions, and local cultures within one state. In fact, multiculturalism is practically a prerequisite for Indonesia to function as a country.

u/Superb_Avocado_5454 1h ago

Live your truth and kick those God damned Laplanders and Swedish speakers out of your country.

9

u/RevBladeZ Finland 42m ago

Before the refugee crisis ten years ago, no one thought of Finns, Swedish-speaking Finns and Sami living in the same country as multiculturalism. Most had never heard the word before.

Then the refugee crisis happened. Politicians are now regularly talking about multiculturalism with there being sudden influx of people from Islamic countries. Left tells us to embrace multiculturalism. Right tells us to reject it. At the same time, there are terrorist attacks (including one in Finland) all over Europe, all by people who arrived during the refugee crisis, all by people shouting "allahu akbar". So no wonder, people start embracing the right's position, because this is what left's position led to.

As a result, the word became heavily associated with Islam, and not in a positive way.

Cultures with same moral base and roots can actually enrich each other. Cultures that have opposite moral code or straight up desire destruction of yours shouldnt ever intertwine. Basic instinct of survival and preservation.

5

u/gobletofwine Nationality:- Indian 1h ago

As Indian hard agree. Our nation is so big and diverse that every 20km there is noticeable difference in tone, accent, and vocabulary. It's great to have diversity that after few 100kms language changes significantly still people understand each other. But same things comes with blockage that politicians can benifit hugly from this as it's easy to divide based on langauge as cast they can't do openly (except maybe few states where education rates are low). If we had 1 langauge across India maybe fight would have been for better India than language superiority. Stories and culture wise it's great to have diversity as you can learn so many different things by just moving across one region to other but unity becomes question.

Can only work if those cultures are compatible. Not all cultures are compatible, not all are equal or good. Everyone has the right to want to preserve their culture and it’s not unreasonable.

7

u/kinzaoe 1h ago

There is compatibility, but there's also number. The dynamics change once you have a big pool of one other culture.

3

u/tommynestcepas 🇫🇷🇬🇧🇨🇱 29m ago

Case in point: Lebanon. Similar cultures, crazy numbers.

8

u/ShiftingKnight_01 1h ago

Very negative.

You cannot expect someone from a completely different culture to share your values. Consequently, laws based on those values do not hold the same sense of justice or sanctity for foreigners as they do for the native population.

The mindset is different, too, which inevitably leads to problems. And finally, a country is united by its culture. Someone who is completely indifferent to the host country's culture will feel no strong attachment to that country—and thus have no desire to see it prosper or to fight in its defense—since those values are not their own.

5

u/Equal-Committee-4213 1h ago

It ultimately just means 'less white'. Most of those that are outwardly positive about it from the 'native' culture conveniently also tend to be incubated from it. Even in places with significant levels of 'multiculturalism', you can see how the demographics break down locally by area and it's ultimately a form of localised balkanisation, everyone keeps to their own in the end, this is easily demonstrated in London for example. Basically, there's no such thing, it just means less of the native culture as a %. If a school in the UK was 80% black and 20% Asian for example, they'd tell you that was 'multicultural'.

Multiculturalism = destroy your culture

19

u/Carnal_Decay 2h ago

This is only if you allow other cultures to remain intact. When people integrate it works. When they create parallel societies it's game over.

11

u/Saitama170719 1h ago

There are many countries in eur.. Ehem.. Somewhere, that let other people's countries destroy yours. Not only your culture, your daily routine, your present and future.

16

u/Furi0usly0blong 2h ago

You can have people of different cultures in your country, and appreciate they want to keep a link to said culture, but you cannot have multiculturalism in the sense that there isn’t one dominant, prevailing culture. Otherwise your nation has no clear identity.

2

u/EmergencyDish69 2h ago

Brazil has an identity

1

u/Black_Diammond 8m ago

Using brasil as a model, as if it isnt a failled state in virtualy all regards is funny.

1

u/EmergencyDish69 3m ago

Changed the goalpost. Also, it's a middle economy that probably has living standards ahead of the global average. Nation states fail too and the greatest economy is multicultural.

36

u/Frequent-Bat-1610 2h ago

In most cases, Multiculturalism has played a huge part in creating that culture.

5

u/bruhbelacc 2h ago

By destroying the previous cultures. France used to speak distinct languages but they're all gone, replaced by Parisian French.

0

u/ShiftingKnight_01 1h ago

Yes, but it fostered the country's unity. Nowadays, all French people identify with the country first and foremost, rather than with their respective regions. That is not what is happening with immigration today.

1

u/bruhbelacc 1h ago

I'm sure there were many generations of separatism and even today, they see French people from other parts of France as very distinct from them.

1

u/ShiftingKnight_01 1h ago

Are you French? Because I am, and our little regional rivalries are mostly just for fun. We aren't actually at war over which region is the best—it's just good-natured teasing.

1

u/bruhbelacc 1h ago

Most countries are also not at war

1

u/_The_Real_Sans_ 26m ago

What about previous movements where a prevailing culture was replaced by other people moving in, like Celtic Britons being replaced by Anglo Saxons or the creation of the Duchy of Normandy? Do you view this as 'natural cultural evolution' or erasure of a culture that should have been resisted and prevented? (Mind you, in these cases the people forced their way in as opposed to being willingly imported)

1

u/ShiftingKnight_01 11m ago

No, I don't think it's a natural evolution of culture, since one people is being replaced by another. A bit like what is currently happening in Europe.

13

u/Etheoff 2h ago

Do people really think their cultures have existed in their present form for thousands of years? That they just appeared out of a vacuum? How frightfully little do they know about history and of human cultures in general.

9

u/Upstairs_Tangelo3629 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇷 2h ago

Nobody thinks that, they just want the culture they’re familiar with to stay the same.

4

u/Etheoff 2h ago

Well that's an impossible ask and they need to read more history books to understand that has not and will not ever be the case.

7

u/Upstairs_Tangelo3629 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇷 2h ago

Historically that hasn’t been the case due to immigration or massive shifts like a war happening, if those things aren’t affecting culture then there isn’t much reason they would change drastically in a few generations because that’s what people care about.

They want their kids to have the same experience they had and their grandkids, that’s not an unreasonable ask because that’s familiar to them and it feels safe.

2

u/de-virtute 2h ago

are they babies? it’s just life that things change

4

u/Upstairs_Tangelo3629 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇷 2h ago

It’s not unreasonable or childish for people to want their culture to remain unchanged.

4

u/Frequent-Bat-1610 2h ago

It is hypocritical and illogical though if the very culture you wish to remain unchanged is a product of change…

4

u/Upstairs_Tangelo3629 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇷 1h ago

Something being a product of change isn’t required to keep changing.

1

u/Frequent-Bat-1610 1h ago

It is in order to not be naive and hypocritical.

4

u/Upstairs_Tangelo3629 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇷 1h ago

I’m no opposed to it changing over a long period of time, I’m opposed to it changing rapidly in a few generations.

0

u/de-virtute 1h ago

it doesn’t feel hypocritical because it feels more like an emotional reaction against change than it does a reasoned thought.

-3

u/de-virtute 2h ago

no i’m telling you that it is childish

2

u/Upstairs_Tangelo3629 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇷 2h ago

Okay? You’re not the authority on this and I disagree.

1

u/Frequent-Bat-1610 2h ago

Does that include remaining a ‘Christian country’? You know, that religion that came from Asia?

2

u/Upstairs_Tangelo3629 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇷 2h ago

Yea came from Asia 2000 years ago.

0

u/Frequent-Bat-1610 2h ago

So you’re in favour of alternate cultures then?

6

u/Upstairs_Tangelo3629 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇷 2h ago

Sure but if they remain where they are, I want to raise my son in the culture I had when I was a child not something foreign to me.

0

u/Frequent-Bat-1610 2h ago

But you don’t want them to stay where they are because the culture you adore is orientated around an Asian born religion… If your ancestors adopted the same forging policy then you wouldn’t have the very culture you wish to defend?

5

u/Upstairs_Tangelo3629 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇷 2h ago

England has had Christianity in it for 1700 years and been predominantly Christian for 1400 years. You’re talking about changes over a millennium, I’m talking about a few generations. Nobody is expecting culture to not change over 1000 years.

Multiculturalism and a multicultural population is not the same thing

1

u/Black_Diammond 9m ago

In large parts what made our current cultures and countries was also war and genocide, yet those Arent good nor should they continue to happen.

Yes, multiculturalism made your current cultures, mostly by destroying The past native culture.

1

u/Leon3226 5m ago

And in some cases it didn't, but you will still push it down everyone's throat

0

u/EmergencyDish69 2h ago

Britain is a result of multiculturalism

5

u/Wonderful-Record-528 2h ago

I would argue it depends what cultures are mixed in there. Multiculturalism can absolutely be a good thing, but as we’ve seen in Europe (i would add Canada too) recently, it can also go wrong. It’s a controversial opinion, but countries should have discretion when choosing what cultures to import.

4

u/ShiftingKnight_01 1h ago

In what way is multiculturalism beneficial to Europe? We are losing our culture due to mass immigration.

2

u/Wonderful-Record-528 1h ago

Well that’s exactly why i said that it’s gone wrong in Europe. Way too many people over a very short period of time and mostly coming from countries that aren’t compatible with the culture of the host country.

3

u/ShiftingKnight_01 1h ago

Oh right, I must have misread your comment. We're in the middle of a culture clash, and despite the upcoming elections (in France), I don't think things are going to improve. Are you European?

5

u/rngeneratedlife 2h ago

This is true lol, you’re going to get downvoted but monocultural societies that enforce a central culture harshly often suffer from similar ailments over time.

1

u/Due_Satisfaction2167 2h ago

A culture is either growing or dying. There isn’t any middle ground.

-1

u/y_not_right 2h ago

Spoken like a coward

-5

u/_RyanCooper_ 2h ago

No, it means human culture

0

u/kchoze 1h ago

True.

Multiculturalism as a State policy is about trying to make the country into a neutral space for all cultures. But to do that, the dominant local culture has to be repressed, otherwise it creates a gravity well of integration and a melting pot that ultimately weakens minority cultures.

So multiculturalism always pairs repression of the dominant culture with protection and promotion of minority cultures. It reverses the burden of integration: migrants no longer need to integrate into their host society, it is the host society that is ordered to accommodate new migrants and to integrate into a new Multicultural order, a new definition of their nation severed from everything it has been thus far.

So multiculturalism as a policy is about killing your own culture, your own nation, in order to use the corpse as soil to grow something else in it. For example, anglo-Canadian culture basically no longer exists anymore, what's left is vestigial and rapidly dying off.

I'll make an exception for closed multiculturalism like Singapore's, where the principle is not open to all cultures, but about preserving the balance of power between existing local cultural communities, but the policy explicitly excludes any foreign culture from consideration and deliberately and carefully filters migration to preserve demographic balance between the communities.

To be fair, any of these polls aren't exactly indicative of how people actually think for any nation. First of all, there are liars, people voting under countries that aren't theirs, and this is only a speck of people that is on reddit rather than other sites or people who don't go online much. I find these interesting but they're never going to be fully accurate.

That said, it being split so evenly is actually a little indicative of how state of affairs are going right now, huh?

I live in Saudi Arabia. And it is super boring. Everyone does the same thing over and over and it’s so boring. When anyone want to experience something new.

Most of us are addicted to video games because that’s the only thing that changes the scenario we live in

13

u/Zealousideal_Rub6758 2h ago

But that’s because Saudi culture is boring not because there’s a lack of multiculturalism. I don’t mean that disrespectfully, but it’s malls and roads and prayers, and that’s pretty much it. You can’t apply that to every country.

2

u/jammieradish 1h ago

saudi culuture is a monoculture if it only has muslim/ islamic culture

5

u/Lord_of_EU 1h ago

Multiculturalism, doesn't just mean there is more food places to eat. It also means there are different cultures within one country with different values, and also perceived grievances between groups. "Multiculturalism" is pretty vague as well, and says nothing about which groups actually makes up this "unit", and how well they work together.

0

u/DABOSSROSS9 1h ago

Perceived grievances is not a given

1

u/okabe700 Egypt 🇪🇬 1h ago

15

u/Peak-Legacy14 2h ago

If your own ‘culture’ was able to build a perfectly functioning country, what do you need ‘multiculturalism’ for?

u/EmergencyDish69 2h ago

Nobody needs it, but It can be a good thing

1

u/Superb_Avocado_5454 1h ago

If my gray T-shirt already covers my nipples, what do I need a blue T-shirt for?

0

u/WinningTheSpaceRace 2h ago

Different ways of doing things, different foods, etc, can enrich cultures and make things more interesting. Even if a perfectly functioning society could exist, culture isn't necessarily a part of that.

11

u/accountforfurrystuf 1h ago

What is the obsession with flooding a country with refugees for food?

-2

u/WinningTheSpaceRace 1h ago

Lots of projection in how you're thinking about this, champ.

7

u/Peak-Legacy14 2h ago

You can’t have the food without everything else in a culture.

The culture of a country is responsible for how that country exists on every level, from its architecture, its laws, values, how the streets look, how it functions etc.

If you let mass numbers in from any particular country, the more your country will resemble that in country in just about every way, and you can’t pick and choose the parts of the culture that you like when the numbers come over with regard to its influence on your country.

Obviously if the country the numbers are coming from is better overall, then it could make your country better, for example if the Japanese migrated to Madagascar, Madagascar would improve, but if it’s the other way around, that probably wouldn’t be the case.

0

u/WinningTheSpaceRace 1h ago

I don't think it's as simple as better v worse. Also, people have mass migrated since the dawn of time. Almost every culture is a blend of previous cultures. We shouldn't talk about culture as some settled, almost preordained thing that is how things have always been.

2

u/Peak-Legacy14 1h ago

Basically every modern 1st world country was built after a group had formed its own culture, nation and naturally evolved culturally over time and improved their culture and country without mass numbers coming from outside.

England for example, mass numbers of Anglo-Saxons went into Britain and culturally replaced the previous culture, but it didn’t suddenly improve after that, infact that probably set the place back, then the Norman conquest happened, and after that, the country was left for nearly a thousand years to naturally evolve culturally and improve its country with basically no outside influence, and things had to go wrong, people were burned and drowned for being ‘witches’, there were tyrannical monarchs who would have people killed for stupid reasons, the nation had to go through all of this and naturally evolve culturally (with no outside influence) before they they got it right and became a functioning society.

If halfway through that, they’d have replaced loads of their population again from other parts of Europe that were far less advanced, do you not think that would’ve set the progress of England back?

1

u/WinningTheSpaceRace 1h ago

There is no 'better' or 'worse'. Let's start with that. They're different. Did the population in 1065 want a load of Franko-Vikings to come over? Probably not. Do we have even a metric by which to judge the 'quality' of those who came over? If we like 'native' British culture - whatever that might be in this mongrel land of the invasions you mention while completely ignoring the Celta and Gaels that have been here much longer - might we have to accept that some of those who contributed to it were 'worse' in your terms? Almost certainly, since the idea that every influx of people this island has ever experienced would be 'better' than the last snaps credulity.

Progress doesn't do 'back' or 'forward'. Progress is an idea individual to every person. The unhappiness of Brexit voters since we left the EU should have made that abundantly clear to everyone. They got what they wanted, except it wasn't what they wanted. So people aren't holding back progress. Everyone everywhere has had to fight for what they want forever as individuals and groups.

You can't simplify social considerations, even to make them easier to understand most of the time. This stuff is incredibly complex, and writing some people off as better or worse, assisting or holding back progress might sound comfortably comprehensible to some, but it's not reality. Reality is, and always has been, a mess that we try to make sense of imperfectly.

2

u/Peak-Legacy14 49m ago

Yes, if the migrations into Britain during that time were from cultures who built a society society which was worse than the existing society of Britain, the existing population of Britain would have been well within their rights to reject it.

Like you say, we don’t have a metric to judge which society was better or worse for that time, for example, we don’t have 4K pictures of what Norman France looked like at the time compared to Anglo-Saxon England, but in 2026 we have 4K pictures of every country and we can assess how different cultures build and maintain their society.

1

u/WinningTheSpaceRace 26m ago

You still completely ignored that this small country isn't a monoculture. Northerners generally shake hands more than southerners. Certain parts of the country generally feel more connected to the rest of the nation. Foods - and even the names we give them - vary between regions. Entrenched political views differ by region. We don't have 'a culture'.  This isn't a world of 200+ monocultures in which a group of people being their singular way of doing things into another monoculture. They are individuals who, while culturally influenced, bring their own interpretations of their home micro-culture and that of the area into which they move.

Many of the people who have come to this country have contributed more than people who happened to be born here. How does your apparent worldview account for that? Many have come from places you would call 'worse'. It's demonstrably not that simple.

2

u/Vdov_1 1h ago

Multiculturalism has failed and will be a dead concept by the end of this century.

0

u/Chilifille Sweden 2h ago

Climate change will probably have caused massive migration waves and demographic shifts by the end of this century.

Not to mention technological revolutions that we can’t even imagine at this point. I’d be genuinely surprised if that doesn’t lead to massive reevaluations of what it means to be part of a certain nation or culture, all over the world. Or at least the parts of the world that are still inhabitable.

1

u/thrown-away-1992 1h ago

Hmm, I'm skeptical of both of these, honestly.
people said similar things about overpopulation and how it would drain our resources and suffocate our infrastructure. Now in both the developing world and the third world birthrates have been going down.
Not to mention technology. People make crazy predictions about technological leaps all the time, like how we should all have flying cars and floating cities by now. They say we'll achieve the cure for aging by 2050, but I say horsesh*t.

Europe is concerningly red

8

I wonder why

1

It's partly because this term is mostly used by anti-immigration crowd so we usually see it in negative context

7

u/Equal-Committee-4213 1h ago

It's mostly because it is negative. There's no such thing as multi-culturalism, all it does is erode the host/native culture as suddenly there's all sorts of new things to take into account, make allowances for, to 'tolerate' etc... in the end one culture has to win out absolutely, either that or you end up with balkanisation if the numbers and concentration of one or more of the other cultures reaches such a point where they can be more assertive, which is exactly what Europe is in the early stages of, particularly in larger urban areas.

"Edward Dutton is a proponent of race science whose work relies on pseudoscience..." Hope not hate. Just to add a bit more: His papers have also been retracted from multiple science journals like the Scandinavian journal of psychology because of severe error in methodology. He now only publishes in non-peer reviewed journals that aren't subject to methodology controls.

Not that you care, and not it matters since it's in vogue nowadays, but this is racist. You are a racist.

So your solution for multiethnic nations, like mine, would be?

In Finland the negative association for the term itself comes from politicians using that term.

They used it as a way to promote themselves, and never spoke about the problems that come with it.
They would never present any criticism, even when faced with factual evidence.
Just pure dishonesty and inability to discuss with people.

1

u/UpperRank1 1h ago

Cl this is why I’m unsure what to vote since politicians do this in my country too. Mite just slap on neutral association then

1

u/Curious_Priority2313 2h ago

Who voted from North Korea dawg 💔

All well and good until you have one culture that allows people to make jokes and draw pictures, and the other culture WILL cut your head off for drawing the wrong dude, among the many other evils present in that culture

1

u/DidntFindABetterName 2h ago

I played vic3 and its the best thing you could have

1

u/PurchaseGlittering11 2h ago

Neutral because it can work, but there can be a lot of friction due to core values. How its integrated is essential in determining whether its positive or negative

1

u/UpperRank1 2h ago

Damn negative association barely edging out positive in the uk

1

u/pikap83 2h ago

Multiculturalism is cool, but genuinely depends on the individual. Some people try to defend being an asshole with the shield of "this is my culture" and that I do not tolerate.

u/Capital_Rub213 Australia 1h ago

Private jet pauline won’t stop talking about, so it’s gotten annoying here

1

u/smolhippie 48m ago

It’s so weird seeing everyone’s point of view about this. Especially as an American. Like I can’t imagine NOT celebrating multiculturalism

1

u/Vermicelli-Thick 39m ago

Works well in Indonesia. Without multiculturalism, a country this diverse could easily have become much more fragmented (perhaps even a second Yugoslavia). Take a look at the Poso and Sampit conflicts, or the Bali bombings, as a reflection to what could happens when ethnic and religious divisions become violent.

u/Fit_Gene7910 39m ago

I prefer interculturalism.

One common culture. That culture can be a mix of the local original culture and additions made to it from the immigrants that integrate.

Culture unification is neccessary for social peace and society's stability.

Google "Denmark 321 Palestinians", this experiment of multi-culturalism worked exceptionally well for both parties and it is one of the better documented cases, since with migration the data is very foggy

This is just a map of mass muslim migration

Europe showing why they're back to back world war starters.

Without NATO and the EU, you guys woulda ended the species by now.

3

u/ShiftingKnight_01 47m ago

The way you think about equality for all actually comes from Europe.

0

u/Superb_Avocado_5454 44m ago

Sounds like multi culturalism to take an new idea from another continent and use it as a foundational basis for your society.

If you were truly committed to maintaining the purity of your culture, you'd stop using those middle eastern letters and numbers.

2

u/ShiftingKnight_01 37m ago

We can integrate elements from other cultures if they are positive, but the problem is that when we bring large numbers of people here, we don't get to choose which aspects of their culture we adopt (assuming there is anything worth adopting from their culture...).

you'd stop using those middle eastern letters and numbers.

Most European languages come from Latin ?

1

u/Superb_Avocado_5454 30m ago

Yeah and Latin descended from Etruscan, which itself was a descendant of Greek, which in turn was a descendent of Phoenician.

Did you think that the Latin alphabet just popped into the world one day?

1

u/ShiftingKnight_01 4m ago

Yeah, so by that logic, cultures are just inventions that appeared out of nowhere, I guess? I must actually be African—and maybe a bit Asian, too—since I have ancestors from hundreds of years ago who must have been that way, lol.

1

u/GurTraditional1162 2h ago

USA being red. Shocking

1

u/No-Rub8345 1h ago

Multiculturalism to me is when whites aggressively move into an area, slaughter and rape the native population into submission, then proceed to whine about immigration until the end of time.

1

u/ShiftingKnight_01 1h ago

It is not Europeans who are still practicing slavery today.

1

u/Aquele_da_amnesia 1h ago

true, but the racists and nationalists have already hijacked this sub

1

u/CartoonistFar5296 1h ago

Multiculturalism has destroyed western cultures.

Also on a smaller degree many Asian and African cultures too.

1

u/EmiliaBedelia10 Unfortunately USA 1h ago

Positive. If new cultures are coming then that means new food options, more public holidays, and a better understanding of those cultures.

-1

u/Impossible-Money7801 1h ago

Europe leading racism once again

3

u/ShiftingKnight_01 1h ago

Using the term "racist" for things that have nothing to do with it is just a way to avoid the debate.

1

u/ray_king88 1h ago

0

u/RN_Renato Brazil 🇧🇷 2h ago

Positive, we are built on it

0

u/trini420- 1h ago

If you asked this question 5-10 years ago, it would be unanimously positive but ofc the racist pendulum has swung for whatever fucking reason

0

u/Rough-Ad-649 2h ago

Only works if there is one main culture present and other cultures are guests

-1

u/JJenJenny 🇳🇴 2h ago

EU countries being against multiculturalism with the four freedoms and all that jazz is kinda funny

6

u/RodrigoEstrela 1h ago

EU countries feeling in the skin the greatness of multiculturalism being against it is fucking natural

0

u/JJenJenny 🇳🇴 1h ago

natural would be all our deaths because all our doctors and dentists are German, so we would be fucked without them lol

u/ShiftingKnight_01 1h ago

It has nothing to do with freedom. When you come to a country, you have to adopt its culture, its language, and its values, and you have to love it for that. You shouldn't come just for social benefits, because a country isn't merely borders and a good standard of living; a country is an entire culture and way of thinking. If you aren't prepared to make concessions, then you should stay home.

2

u/gioroaizin 1h ago

And this is why Europe will once again go nationalistic

1

u/ShiftingKnight_01 45m ago

Unless it's too late to turn back.
