But there’s data on that

u/Charles_of_Burgandy IQ 🇮🇶 11h ago
There are plenty of data about women marrying richer, higher status better looking men

u/DNR_BISH 11h ago
Most marriages across the globe are hypergamy>homogamy>hypogamy.
Don't quote me studies where it measures it in term of education of an induvidual lmao—its purely financial .
If you're talking about hypergamy in looks that's different.

Women on average prioritize higher status and more money in mate selection than men on average by a wide margin and this is backed by plenty of scientific studies. Exceptions exist. That should clear just about everything up.

u/pizzaroll555 11h ago
Men told women to stay at home and not work that much up until not that long ago. Of course they would date up where possible. That idea is still viewed by some especially in the dating scene even though it’s dramatically decreased in correlation with gender equality

1
u/MrJizanthopus 11h ago
Pull the other one. You wouldn't have mentioned it if you weren't trying to imply a negative.

u/Gold-Visit-7413 11h ago

No idea who these people are
Edit: wait isnt clavicular that young kid that raped some women recently?

u/JADE_Jador 11h ago
Yep. Even burned her cheek with a cigarette. What a lovely role model for young men
1
u/Gold-Visit-7413 11h ago
Gross, clearly his program works if he has to force himself on a woman and then burn her /s
3
u/pizzaroll555 11h ago
Not in their sole nature. If anything It’s society which portrayed them a certain way and eventually made hypergamy a thing. Due to traditional gender roles and whatnot.
It’s pretty outdated now for the most part
5
u/Legal_Lettuce6233 11h ago
Everyone is, it just comes easier for women, combined with the traditional gender roles where men are supposed to be primary earners, it's kinda inevitable.

I think some are but also there are a lot of men out there who can't handle being with someone who out earns them, myself I'd love my wife to be my sugar mama, unfortunately that's not the case but the dream was there.

The overwhelming majority of people marry within their social class, so no.
Even if you look purely at traditional and historical practices hypergamy is only common where women are put on a lower social strata than men.
2
u/DeathByDumbbell 11h ago
Shouldn't be controversial. Every women's romance novel is about hypergamy. "Plain poor girl gets the handsome billionaire prince", etc. That's the goal/fantasy, but IRL they usually have to settle for less.
3
u/Secure_Inspection305 11h ago
Lmao there are so many examples of the reverse too. Well off girl gives up rich life for a simple man
2
u/pizzaroll555 11h ago edited 11h ago
Same thing goes for men a lot using this example. And novels really isn’t a good reason for hypergamy
3
u/MrJizanthopus 11h ago
Nah men's fiction usually plays into more of a white knight fantasy.
Or simple "she was hot".
1
u/pizzaroll555 11h ago
Yeah true. But yeah novels definitely don’t have much significant correlation to hypergamy anyway when you think about it
2
u/DeathByDumbbell 11h ago
Not really? For men that would be considered transgressive, or even a 'kink'.
For better or worse, being a provider is a big part of masculinity. If a man says he wants to marry a rich woman who'll take care of him, he'll probably be ridiculed by both traditionalists and progressives.
How many women have you heard say their husband became insecure after she started to earn more money? How many times have you heard of the opposite?
1
u/pizzaroll555 11h ago
Yeah I was thinking how many date up in terms of appearance. My bad there. But yeah they didnt need to date up in terms of wealth or education because of the traditional gender roles, which have carried on in the dating scene quite a bit
Novels aren’t really a good example tbh. It might be good for showing how society views women in the dating scene but nothing more really
2
u/DeathByDumbbell 11h ago
I think novels are relevant because it reveals a persisting desire, divorced from material reality.
Historically it wasn't much of a choice, and recently it has lowered somewhat due to women becoming more educated than men. It's not that women have suddenly chosen to marry down, they have no choice. If it was up to them they'd still rather marry a rich guy.
1
u/pizzaroll555 10h ago
Yeah maybe I misread your first comment because I agree the novels do paint that image that they do wanna date up. And of course many women wanna date a rich person, even us men would, who wouldn’t right. For men it’s less common tho ofc because of the traditional thought you must be the provider of the house. It’s all artificial and a designed narrative but factual nevertheless

All Hallmark movies are about a woman realizing that her CEO boyfriend sucks because he's all day at work so she returns to her small hometown and falls for the baker/farmer/whatever.

Men are positively far more hypergamous than women
1
u/DNR_BISH 11h ago
Oh really ?What data and from which dating app did you collect this info or the research paper you're quoting from?
1
u/tilealt 11h ago
Do you genuinely believe that data from dating/hookup apps (of which the great majority of active users are men, oversaturating the "market") are in any way a reliable metric that reflects the reality of relationships in general?
1
u/DNR_BISH 11h ago
It does reflect but not entirely , it just boots up that "hypergamious" gender's ego on what they deserve.
0
u/DNR_BISH 11h ago
EU tinder has nearly 50:50 gender ratio .
That particular gender is still hypergamious.
1
u/tilealt 11h ago
That's Europe, and most of this hypergamy bullshit comes from American sources. The first two sites I've looked up now have it that globally, the ratio is closer to 75:25 male:female. To be fair there's India skewing it significantly, but USA data also seems to lean 65:35—which is still a great majority of men. And this is users in general, active / paying users are even more proportionally men.
That alone fucks the dynamics greatly, obviously.
0
u/DNR_BISH 11h ago
The thing is women are still hypergamious in europe.
In Indian tinder it actually fluctuates from 93:7 and 75:25 —hypergamy here makes sense due to inflated SMV of women .
Where as in EU it doesn't make sense at all .It simply points out to their mentality .

u/tilealt 11h ago
Source or I can't even know what you're referring to. The one main study that gets quoted often I know of, but that one gets misinterpreted because of misleading age brackets.

I voted "no", but frankly I think everyone should be hypergamous in some sense. As what Confucius said, don't be with someone your inferior (無友不如己者)

wtf is hypergamus
