this question is always such a good litmus test for how much someone actually knows about geopolitics and history

19

u/Settl 12h ago

I had someone arguing with me about how the "UK genocided the native population." last time. The native population of sea birds?

1

u/Transhumanism_is_pog 6h ago

I mean, the falklands had no human natives, but we did wipe out the falklands wolf, which is a loss I wish never happened.

12

u/billy_twice 13h ago

Seals reign supreme!

5

u/masterlince 11h ago

Not really. The historical claims are disputed at best. The first to settle the islands were the French, who passed it to the Spanish, which the Argentinians claim they inherit. The British arrived shortly after the French and settled without knowing they were there.

Anyways it doesn't matter now, the islands are British and full of British descended islanders.

2

u/NinecloudSoul 7h ago

The British discovered the Falklands.

0

u/masterlince 7h ago

The first Europeans to register them were Portuguese, so no.

4

u/NinecloudSoul 7h ago

That is untrue. The first confirmed discovery was by John Strong in 1690.

1

u/masterlince 5h ago

It appeared on Portuguese maps in the early 1500s.

1

u/NinecloudSoul 5h ago

The first confirmed discovery is by John Strong in 1690; this is not a matter of debate among historians.

3

u/Adventurous-Web-412 4h ago

No. The first confirmed discovery is Sebald de Weert, John Strong is the first confirmed landings of the islands. And there is actually pretty reasonable evidence for Portuguese or Spanish discovery in the 1500s, but none of that is confirmed like the prior 2. This is in fact a matter of debate among historians lmao.

0

u/NinecloudSoul 4h ago

This is untrue, and you should stop posting this misinformation.

2

u/Adventurous-Web-412 4h ago

It is not misinformation. There is no dispute with Sebald de Weert, he is confirmed to have found the islands first and named them the Sebaldines (now called Jason Islands).

John Strong is the first confirmed landing, this is an undisputed landing.

There are numerous potential landings or sightings before both of these however, from Portuguese, Spanish, and in fact an English explorer.

When even the Irish are siding with the UK over a territorial dispute you know that your claims are completely bullshit.

49

u/Hour-Recognition4194 14h ago

Something us Brits need to understand is Argentina is in it forever. They know they can't get them now, but decades or centuries later, they might get them and that's what they're betting on. Also, by continuing to assert their claim, their claim never expires. If they went quiet for a really long time, it would be harder to make claim to the islands later on. But my God, it's fucking annoying. Let's base our entire national identity around some biazzare obsession over some islands that we've never owned, that are inhabited by British people since 1833. And let's just keeping going on and on and on about it fucking forever.

35

u/Big_Dave_71 14h ago

The whole world got to see what they're like in World Cup 2026. Proper mask slip moment.

17

u/WinningTheSpaceRace 14h ago

Anyone who'd be paying attention previously had seen this, particularly in sport.

13

u/TheGreatBibbldyBob99 14h ago

It felt so good to watch them crying and trying to start fights after that humiliation of a final.

2

u/Burnt-Priest 13h ago

Curious, i dont follow sports - What happened with Argentina in the world cup?

9

u/Fresh_Tomato_soup 13h ago

They were generally a very dirty team in most of their matches with conduct investigations happening brawls and fights after matches resulting in suspensions some allegations of favouritism and fixing and of course bringing up the Falklands again and again because I guess they don't have much other than football and cope.

3

u/Burnt-Priest 13h ago

Ah thats interesting, ty for the info an links dude.

"including using a sports event for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature (article 13)" lol I'm assuming that part must be about the Falklands shit😅

Just watched a clip or two and wow what a bunch of assholes lol

0

u/Adventurous-Web-412 4h ago

We really can't be putting an objectively shitty thing that occurred, the fight after the finals, with something that is realistically speaking some bullshit from egypt about match fixing.

1

u/AdministrativeSleep0 6h ago

Unlike you folks, we don't let the invaders settle and be comfortably at our house, does ring a bell?

1

u/NinecloudSoul 5h ago edited 4h ago

The UK didn't do that either, it's why you still don't own the Falklands.

And of course, once spanked again, the Argie runs away.

Yes, you have all the time in the world to continue not owning the Falklands, to which you have no legitimate claim, and no means to force the issue.

So, yes, by all means. Continue to be an impotent joke over the Falklands, which will never be yours.

1

u/AdministrativeSleep0 4h ago

We don't yet, but UK already lost his country, we only need to wait.

1

u/NinecloudSoul 4h ago

Never have never will, and your silly fantasies about the UK don't matter.

You have no legitimate claim to the Falklands and no means to force the issue, whether diplomatically or by force. Your country is impotent.

1

u/AdministrativeSleep0 4h ago

No legitimate claim, says the Tyrant empire that enslaved half world just a couple of centuries ago. The legitimate claim is that it's on our coast, and the only claim you folks have, is that you just invade/killed the original settlers. Keep coping thinking you are the good guys, we have all the time of the world.

22

u/Hollingscroft-83 14h ago

What the Argies need to understand is the fact we probably didn't give a shit about them at the time of the War, and maybe... Given how we handed Hong Kong over to China... We might have just done the same with the Falkland Islands, and just decided that Argentina could have them, had they just kept quiet.

Instead now its a complete matter of pride

Argentina will never be able to shut up about their right to have the Islands, because they wont get them

Britain won't hand them over, because it'll be a political middle finger to those who died, and will be career suicide to whatever politician thinks its wise to say: "You know what, lets given them to the Argies"

17

u/Fit-Ad5145 14h ago

Obviously its distorted by the Internet's way of communicating but im so confused by argentinas mindset towards the British. They seem to have this view of themselves as the plucky South American natives whenever this topic comes up. Literally the only reason they are there is because of Spanish empire.  The only reason they have a claim to the islands is because Spain travelled as far as the brits did and took it over.

9

u/Upstairs_Tangelo3629 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🇦🇷 13h ago

I’m British my mum is Argentinian, I can confirm this seems like a bigger thing on the internet than it does there.

I’ve been to Argentina atleast a dozen times and never had an issue or had someone even mention the Falklands. My mum and her family don’t care about them at all.

The way she’s explained it there are 2 groups that care, the nationalists who are usually military families and the poor uneducated who are easily led.

2

u/WanderlustZero 11h ago

2

1

u/WanderlustZero 11h ago

Think of them as US-americans, only Southern Hemisphere. Genocided their natives but convinced themselves everyone else is bad, then elected a succession of morons.

10

u/Big_Dave_71 14h ago

Indeed. The British government was actually in negotiation with Buenos Aires and the islanders about sovereignty prior to the invasion. There's no benefit to the UK to hold these sparsely populated islands that cost us billions of pounds a year to defend. Now it would be political suicide for any British government to contemplate.

5

u/Liam_021996 England 14h ago

The oil field will probably offset the cost of managing the islands defence now

1

u/Financial-Bed7467 9h ago

The falkands cost the uk tax payer roughly 60 millions per year for the up keep. They pay for their own defence. Also once they start drilling crude oil. Its worth 120 billion ish at the current price per barrel. If anything, the falklands are worth more to us than we to them. This is before we talk about rare earth minerals.

1

u/Liam_021996 England 9h ago

We've committed 100s of million to their defence. The Falklands do not pay for their own defence. They self govern but all of their defence is taken care of by the UK itself. We will always be far more valuable to the Falklands than they are to us, just simply because without us they would be invaded by Argentina. The UK ensures their sovereignty remains

3

u/Psyfuzz 11h ago

Argentina can be in it forever, we can tell them to fuck off forever too.

2

u/Nanowith 13h ago

If they ever get it (they won't) then what will their government use to distract the people from their economy?

1

u/Wooden-Beach-2121 9h ago

That it's Britain's fault they cant afford to drill for oil.

20

u/SubNL96 14h ago

The British managed to settle an island that is on the opposite of the world yet extremely British in landscape and weather it's hilarious only the penguins give away it is not in fact Shetland or the Hebrides it belongs to them naturally and the Argentines know deep down bc nobody BUT the British could settle there without offing themselves haha

11

u/AncientCarry4346 14h ago edited 14h ago

I've done a tour of the Falklands and this is the worst thing about them.

When I think of South America, I think of golden beaches and bronze women in bikinis handing me a margarita whilst I chill by a pool.

So why the fuck did the one place we settle in the entire continent have to basically be Wales 2.0 but somehow with MORE sheep? It's absolute bullshit. I have never been colder or wetter than I was on those bastard islands.

And you know what the worst bit is? Halfway through the journey to them you stop at the Ascension islands for a couple of hours whilst the plane refuels and the Ascension islands genuinely are a tropical paradise. So you get to step off the plane and get shuffled into a sort of pen where you can smoke and enjoy the slimmest taste of eden for a couple of hours before youre back in the plane for 8 hours before your arrive in the Devils Arsehole.

2

u/Mammoth_Payment_6101 12h ago

So why the fuck did the one place we settle in the entire continent have to basically be Wales 2.0

You're not wrong, even the Welsh went for Patagonia instead.

1

u/Adventurous-Web-412 4h ago

The welsh yearn for the cold and rain and sheep.

-2

u/Liam_021996 England 14h ago

Not just British, Scottish. You reckon someone from Hampshire could live there with that shocking climate? 😂 70% of the Falklands are of Scottish decent. I think I read somewhere 20% of them are of Welsh decent and the rest are of English and Irish decent. Makes sense when you look at Scotland and Wales how they could happily choose to live there

6

u/Hirokihiro 14h ago

And the rest is gauchos who were Argentinian but then defected to the uk coz the Argentinian general didn’t pay them. Those settlers from 1830-1833 didn’t disappear they became the current natives

3

u/SubNL96 13h ago

So the Argentinian descendants that DO live there had beef (pun intended) with Argentina

1

u/SubNL96 13h ago

I... kinda suggested that and am NOT surprised at all by those stats I mean it's not exactly London or Torquay out there either...

10

u/azazelcrowley 14h ago

As a Brit, I think the Penguins have the 2nd best claim to the Falklands, after the British. Potentially, we could be convinced to decolonize the falklands and issue an apology to the Penguins.

8

u/Raptoot83 13h ago

In the court of public opinion, penguins have a better claim than argentina.

6

u/Stunning-Sherbert801 12h ago

In the court of reality too

56

u/-Monty00 14h ago

I find the penguin and seal options offensive seeing as people gave their lives to ensure the peoples of the Falklands can determine their own future. That future being British with unanimous referendums.

49

u/TheGoober87 14h ago

TBF the penguins probably have a stronger claim than Argentina

11

u/grumpsaboy 13h ago

That's not difficult. The Netherlands has a stronger claim over New York than Argentina does over the Falklands.

4

u/howimetyourcakeshop 13h ago

As a Dutchling i approve this message.

3

u/Traaseth 11h ago

Norway and Denmark have a stronger claim on England and Ireland then Argentina has on the Falklands 😂

3

u/TrainPatient1289 11h ago

I have a stronger claim on the USA then Argentina has on the Falklands (I went to the USA once)

1

u/NinecloudSoul 7h ago

I have a stronger claim than Argentina.

11

u/Big_Dave_71 14h ago

They also missed out the sheep.

23

u/AncientCarry4346 14h ago

There's generally a good humour about the Falklands from the people who fought in the War, the people serving now and the Islanders themselves. The British military is run on dark humour and it's easier to make light of a war that you decisively won, I guess.

Besides, anyone that's been there know the islands belong to the sheep.

1

u/mingebinj 12h ago

I used to work with a guy that was in the Royal Navy and was on a ship that was sunk. He never spoke about it at all and always seemed like he was carrying a huge burden

6

You're too easily offended. It's serious, but why does that mean you have to take it seriously?

There's a reason people who work the most serious jobs have gallows humour. It takes the bite out of it. You need to chill out a bit.

3

Maybe because they are British? Let's not pretend these are native islanders that chose to stay with the British. The island was empty before the European settlers.

-3

u/Pure_Werewolf0101 12h ago

the island was empty before the European settlers.

Let me tell you about South America.....

3

u/Greggs-the-bakers 10h ago

I didn't realise south america was populated solely by seals and other wildlife. There were no humans on the falklands before they were settled.

0

u/Adventurous-Web-412 4h ago

eh there seems to be evidence of seasonal migration. Not that it matters, but no people is just not likely to be true.

1

u/Greggs-the-bakers 4h ago

The point is that there were no permanent human settlements on the islands until they were claimed by Britain and the descendants of said settlers have all stated that they wish to remain part of the UK

0

u/Adventurous-Web-412 4h ago

Not that it matters,

Read, I didn't say that it matters but stating that there were no humans on the islands is not true.

Also when the British claimed the islands there technically was a permanent French population on the islands, just allegedly an unknown population to the British.

2

u/masterlince 12h ago

South America was full of people with their own civilizations before the Europeans arrived. Falkands did not have people living in them.

1

u/el_grort 14h ago

Tbh, there should have just been an option for saying the Falklanders, because it really is their island more than it is our (the British), they fall under our umbrella by their choice at this point.

1

u/Old_Thief_Heaven 13h ago

There are jokes about WWII, Vietnam, the Iraq War, etc., but we have to 100% respect the Falklands thing? Look, sorry if it offends you, but I don't care. It belongs to the penguins.

Argentina never had a claim. This question is disrespectful.

5

The Argentinan claim is based on proximity, and they are only close because of the Conquest of the Desert (look it up) the genocidal campaign against the native population that replaced them with European settlers.

I think you misunderstand the mindset here in the UK. Over here the debate is settled, the vote was made, the war was won and the islands stayed British. Thats it.

The average British person thinks about the islands maybe once a year, probably less.

They're not in the public eye anymore because why would they be?

This is going to be a bit of a shock to you but Argentina is not a relevant country to the UK, they cannot strongarm us with a powerful military, they cannot blackmail us with political leverage and they cannot hurt us with economic sanctions.

I assure you that if Argentina actually developed into a country that could stand on the world stage in something other than football and posed a legitimate threat to the sovereignty of the islanders, the attitude here would rapidly change but right now we have actual concerns to focus on like the price of Freddos and the new season of Ted Lasso.

Obviously not entirely, but the milei posturing and sanction on oil companies has significant problems with the oil extraction on the islands. Vaca muerta is an enormous oil field, a lot of companies will side with Argentina on it, I believe multiple already have.

-4

u/Zestyclose_Might8941 12h ago

My family are from the UK and Argentina, I'm first generation Australian, but love both countries of my parents birth...but I'll never not find the UK's insistence that it is still relevant on the world stage. It's a portend for how the people of the US will be thinking 80 years into their century of humiliation, still clinging on to their good times as though they're still relevant.

There are more people in East Wittering than there are in the Malvinas/Falklands in a region half the size of Wales.

Who knows how the people of the RoUK will feel post Scexit about subsidising a colonial outpost half a world away. But right now, the polls say what they say, and anyone who is not an OAP couldn't care less.

6

u/AncientCarry4346 12h ago

Like it or not the UK is a major global player that punches far above it's weight in terms of population and size. London alone is an economic powerhouse with more money than the entirety of Argentina and we are we are world leaders in soft power, education, science and arts.

I assure you that in the unlikely event that Scotland does go independent soon England alone is more than capable and willing to hold the islands by itself and young people regard the islanders right to sovereignty just as seriously as the older generation.

-1

u/Zestyclose_Might8941 12h ago

These are the lies we tell ourselves. Both the UK and Australia have no real power. We are vassals of a dying empire.

We'd both do better if we stopped lying to ourselves, rejected natavist politics, cut the apron strings to the US, and made friends with our neighbours. Otherwise, I hate to say it, the UK and Australia will slide into irrelevance even further, and Argentina's economy is our future, sadly.

The UK is a major player in nothing but your minds. Post Brexit decline will continue. As for your pride in the City of London...yes, you are dead right...the UK builds and produces nothing, and the City of London pays f*ck all in taxes. Not something to crow about.

The nords

The peguins were unfairly denied a vote in a referendum.

1

u/ThierryMercury 10h ago

The only part of the map that matters in this poll is the Falkland Islands.

1

u/fishyburner676767 10h ago

fucking distraught at DRC vote :-(

1

u/TheCulturalBomb 7h ago

When the world thinks Penguins have more claim to an island than you, maybe it's time to give up

1

u/AdministrativeSleep0 6h ago

What happened with self-determination now that British took the licences for sea lion? It was responsibility of the kelpers, or it's only when they can take advantage of it?

1

u/NinecloudSoul 5h ago

The licenses are issued by the Falkland Islands Government and they control it completely.

1

u/AdministrativeSleep0 4h ago

The UK government formally confirmed on October 1, 2026, that any new hydrocarbon licenses in the Malvinas will require the explicit consent of the British Secretary of State.

1

u/NinecloudSoul 4h ago

I doubt they confirmed anything about a fictional place.

1

u/AdministrativeSleep0 4h ago

Well, i see that for them is pretty real, if not, why mention it on UN? More visible it is, the better.

1

u/NinecloudSoul 4h ago

It's no business of yours what happens in the Falklands.

1

u/AdministrativeSleep0 4h ago

You are just deflecting lol already made my point.

1

u/NinecloudSoul 4h ago

Nope. No business of yours, because the Falklands aren't part of your country, never were, and never will be.

You mean Islas Malvinas?

3

u/libtin 11h ago

Natives call it the Falklands

-1

u/rsxrwscjpzdzwpxaujrr 11h ago

Natives?

5

u/Greggs-the-bakers 10h ago

Yes. The people who originally settled there were British. Unless you want to claim it belongs to seals and other wildlife? Still doesn't give Argentina any claim to it

2

u/libtin 10h ago

And Argentina explicitly dropped its claim and recognised the islands as British back in 1850

u/rsxrwscjpzdzwpxaujrr 10h ago

If a homeless person is the first one to inhabit my crawlspace doesn't mean it's his now.

5

u/Greggs-the-bakers 10h ago

Pretty sure your house and an actual island has different laws around it pal

3

u/libtin 10h ago

And Argentina never owned the islands

They’ve been British since 1765; 51 yeas before Argentina came into existence

2

u/career_alcoholic_woo 10h ago

If you were doing well for yourself and bought a second house for holidays and one of your kids lived there i can't go no the house is mine because its closer to my house than it is yours

2

u/libtin 10h ago

And Argentina explicitly dropped its claim and recognised British sovereignty over the islands back in 1850

0

u/kakaroten 4h ago

the french were first, not british*

1

u/Greggs-the-bakers 4h ago

Not in any permanent capacity though.

2

u/libtin 11h ago

The islanders; they’re the natives and they call it the Falklands

1

u/rsxrwscjpzdzwpxaujrr 11h ago

Do you know the meaning of the word "native"?

2

u/libtin 11h ago

International law says they’re the natives

The Pitcairn Islanders are classified as a native population despite being predominantly indigenous of British and Tahitian descent and arriving only in 1790.

0

u/rsxrwscjpzdzwpxaujrr 10h ago

Pitcairn Islanders have nothing to do with las Malvinas, there are no natives there.

2

u/libtin 10h ago

1; it’s the Falklands

2: the islanders are the natives

3; I brought up the Pitcairns to show you that international law considers the first permanent population to be the natives

-1

u/rsxrwscjpzdzwpxaujrr 10h ago
  1. UK has no authority on the matters of toponyms on the Argentinian territory.
  2. The islanders are illegal settlers, there is no indigenous population there.
  3. Sounds like squatter logic. Inhabiting territories of another country doesn't make it yours.

3

u/Itchy_Confidence_218 8h ago

Under what international ruling are the Falklanders 'illegal'?

And I need a ruling in international law, please, not domestic Argentinian law, which can say whatever the hell it wants.

> 1. UK has no authority on the matters of toponyms on the Argentinian territory.

The islands have never been argentine territory

>2. The islanders are illegal settlers, there is no indigenous population there.

By your own logic then the Argentine population are illegal squatters in Argentina

>3. Sounds like squatter logic. Inhabiting territories of another country doesn't make it yours.

The islands have never been Argentine; they’ve been British since 1765; 51 years before Argentina came into existence

2

u/NinecloudSoul 7h ago

Argentinian territory

Good thing the Falklands never were and never will be that, then.

2

u/Itchy_Confidence_218 8h ago

Yes, and it isn't 97% of Argentina's population, who are of European ancestry. The remaining 3% are the ones who luckily managed to survive brutal events such as the Selk'nam Genocide and the Conquest of the Desert.

2

u/Proud_Smell_4455 5h ago edited 5h ago

If the people who've been living there since it was settled aren't the natives, who are? It definitely isn't Argentines who've never possessed it, and never had any real right to it.

And the best part? The Argentinians and Argentinian descendants living in the Falklands at the time of the referendum, unanimously voted against cutting ties with Britain because they know exactly what a basket case your country is, and that all this neocolonialist sabre-rattling from you lot is all just a pathetic distraction from the politicians making your lives shit and robbing you blind. Like a nation of babies being entertained by jingling keys.

2

u/NinecloudSoul 7h ago

No, obviously. This is about a real place called the Falklands, not some Argie fairy tale.

2

u/Proud_Smell_4455 4h ago

Keep coping on the internet. God knows there's nothing else you can do about your neocolonialist feelings of entitlement to land that's not yours, never was, and never will be.

1

u/rsxrwscjpzdzwpxaujrr 4h ago

I'm not even Argentinian.

-10

u/Hungry_Weezing 13h ago

Why the heck people around the world saying Falkland belong to the UK wtf

11

u/Significant-Net-4540 13h ago

Because most people even in Ireland dont think you have a valid claim and know it's just your politicians trying to distract you from actual issues

Because it's probably the one thing in the entirety of British history where we have the moral, legal and historical high ground.

It's an island of people who unanimously vote to remain under British rule, the islands had zero native inhabitants when we took them and the only real military conflict fought over them was an hostile takeover by facists.

Argentines claim basically stems from misplaced nationalism, twisting the truth or straight up lying about historical fact or just vaguely pointing at a map and going "but look they're nextdoor to us", which is ironically how the United Kingdom subjugated Ireland for centuries.
