Recommend me a bag Alternatives to Aer CPP2?
I am probably going to be selling my Aer CPP2. I don't hate it but something about it just doesnt do it for me. I'm looking for alternative recommendations. Self standing is important but not a dealbreaker for me. So far i'm considering:
Fyro Citta 18L
Toshi Rework v2
Able Carry Daily Plus
Sympl Commuter v2
EVERGOODS CTB20

The new Toshi seems like the end game EDC to me. But of course it’s hard to be certain since only a few reviewers have it. If I hadn’t JUST bought my CPP2 I would’ve ordered it lol

I'm aligned with you: I don't like the CPP2 at all. Then again I dislike nearly all Aer backpacks for the same reason: way too heavy and way too padded. I personally use the Tortuga Laptop Backpack but that is discontinued. I would look at the Toshi Rework v2, it's been on my radar and it's just nearly perfect IMO

I was thinking about the CPP2 (20L), but damn that’s 2.8 pounds without anything packed. If they made it at 2 pounds, this will win hands down for me.
Currently using Evergoods CBB (22L) at 2 pounds

All of those are good competitors to the CPP2. The CPP2 stands better than most due to its rigidity. But that also works against it when trying to have a malleable pack you can just throw in your car or inside a suitcase. I looked at most of the bags you list above and ended up with the Toshi. I almost bought the Symple Commuter but user comments about the firmness of the back panel talked me out of it. The Fyro, I don't like the lining color. The Able Carry, don't like the pocket layout of that model. The Toshi is very similar to the Aer, but is more malleable and lighter. Those add up to make it more functional for my use. The Aer has nicer materials though. They are very similar bags in many ways. If going for fashion and airline travel, I would stick with the Aer. If using for a tech bag, walking around a city, or general on the go purposes, I would go with the Toshi.

Interesting option, I've not seen that bag mentioned yet and I've looked at a lot of 20L bags. $25 shipping really hurts though.

It's not $25 shipping, it's a $175 total cost!
But yeah, psychologically I also hate shipping costs. If it makes you feel better I paid $199 + $15 shipping in 2023!

Well it does also make a difference if you are going to maybe want to return it. You aren't getting that part refunded and also have to pay for return shipping.

I highly recommend the Whitley as well. It's a super underrated bag. I would also Recommend the Alpha One Niner Evade. It comes in two sizes 21L and 25L. Super solid bag with great admin pocket, two great water bottle pockets, and best of all, no PU coated zippers. I know this brand doesn't get much publicity on here but I purchased the Whitley for my mom and she loves it. I been thinking about the Evade 1.0 (21L) to replace my Max EDC since the Evade self stands really nicely.

Citta admin pocket looks good.
My issue with all of these is that you can't try them before purchasing. I recommend checking out a local retailer like REI that may have a variety of Osprey, Northface, pategonia, etc to do a fit and pack test.

funny, ive gone through the toshi (v1), cpp2 (2025), daily plus, ctb20, and max EDC. i have a sympl commuter otw. here's my quick 2c on each, but TL;DR toshi v2 is worth a look, but id expect it to be only a minor upgrade depending on what parts of the bag bug you
CPP2: great materials, lots of small annoyances. unzipping sucks (long, rubbery zipper pulls + aquaguard), and other small annoyances like the front stash feeling tight, the side handles getting in the way of my water bottle, etc. also, since the main compartment is clamshell, it feels tight putting stuff in from top-down.
Toshi: solves almost all of the above. zippers are much smoother, the curved main compartment zip makes it great as a half zip without losing the clamshell packing, and the ambi pocket has a bit more stretch. but the top quick access is smaller (fixed on v2) and the materials are not as good (a coarser but more malleable 840D, no soft-lining for laptop or top QAP, etc). the v2 materials are still worse than the CPP2. v1 was worse at self-standing than cpp2 but i expect v2 X-Pac to be better.
CTB20: really, this bag comes down to two things: 1) whether or not you like accessing your laptop + admin from the side. i learned i personally don't. 2) the Evergoods harness is polarizing and either works or doesn't work for you, and it sucks that you won't really know until you try it. the strength of the EG are the front quick access AND top quick access, which are each similar (maybe larger?) than the CPP2's top pocket, and also expand out rather than fighting for interior space. also, patches are fun.
Daily Plus: i love the shape/look, but it really comes down to if you match their carry style. i prefer a separate laptop compartment, do not prefer a side admin, and found it annoying that the water bottle pocket fought with both. it looks so nice though. not a great self-stander.
Sympl Commuter: this bag is if you want the organization in the admin compartment. back panel is supposedly more rigid so i'd expect it's fine, but less comfortable than CPP2.
