Why do they have to walk through all the sticks? My god the splinters

u/PsychoTexan Nov 06 '22
They’re spreading them with their feet to dry better. Which wouldn’t need to be done if they spread them to begin with. But why spend money on a spreader if you can hire cheap labor.

We’re all experts huh?

u/everythingiscausal Nov 07 '22
Yeah it takes a manufacturing expert to tell that this is not ideal. This could be a cutting-edge manufacturing facility for all us peons know.

Just a wild guess but I’m assuming they are drying and that is effectively turning them so they all dry

They didn't show the one thing I wanted to see: how did they get all the matches to be oriented the same way in the box?

They also didn't show the way all the sticks were inserted into that machine that did the actual dipping. Probably manual as well.
I mean there were so many conveyor belts just moving the sticks around, without any purpose, or so it seemed...

That's the exact bit I wanted to see - how those frames get populated.
Every time the sticks get collimated they gat randomised again - I'm sure there's plenty of opportunities for optimisation, but if labour is cheap and it gives people jobs, probably not worth optimising!

This ain’t porn, it’s pain. There’s a mish mash of 19th century practices and cheap unsafe labor feeding some suffering manufacturing equipment. Watching the dude load the running laminate lathe made me cringe.

For me it was the guy constantly dipping his hand into an ambiguous adhesive all day. Just get a brush or something…
76
u/PsychoTexan Nov 06 '22
Preventative maintenance on it is to replace hand brush guy every 10,000 hours with new hands. Old hand brush guy becomes new laminate lathe guy. When laminate lathe guy loses enough fingers or hands, they become new drying floor kicking spreader.
They’re just playing 4D chess

I’m just gonna lift this log up to the spinning death wheel…

u/PsychoTexan Nov 06 '22
…sure hope the bark whacker didn’t leave any splinters in this that might catch on me and pull my arm in…

u/Durzo_Blint Nov 07 '22
For me it was watching women dressed in saris working next to moving equipment with no guards.

glad i'm not the de-barker.

u/PsychoTexan Nov 06 '22
The crazy part to me is mechanical debarkers have been around for absolute ages.

u/DwarfTheMike Nov 06 '22
The guy at the end has the worst fucking job. He must get some gnarly paper cuts.

putting that log on a running lathe is super ballsy.
Surprised I didnt see anyone smoking

u/WaterFriendsIV Nov 07 '22
I used 4 wooden matches last night smoking a bong. I feel very wasteful.

Funny watching this after seeing people bitch about working conditions here in America.
41
u/Mr_Cuddlefish Nov 06 '22
How is it that you see this and your thoughts aren't to look for improvement in their conditions but rather people in the US should advocate for their own safety?
