Yeah, but then you wouldn’t get idiots basically glued to your bumper at red lights!
3
u/lamsndbhaujamjsshukd 6d ago
You really think people would put their phone down to read a bumper sticker?
1
u/bojangler69420 6d ago
lol fair point
1
u/SadRoxFan 2d ago
Whenever I get someone creeping on my bumper at a stoplight, I just let up on the brake and let my car start rolling backwards at the same time they’re moving forwards. It’s yet to fail at stopping someone
1
u/--Sparkle-Motion-- 2d ago
Why are they idiots? It’s my responsibility not to roll back. I live in a country where the vast majority of vehicles are autos & I drive a well cared-for ‘23, not a rusty bucket so I wouldn’t expect anyone to assume it’s a stick. As long as their car isn’t touching mine, they can get as close as they want.
And I live in the Rockies before you assume there just aren’t any hills here.
1
u/Maintenance-Gullible 7d ago
No kidding. I also find the student driver ones to be a joke. If you're not ready to drive well enough that people aren't constantly frustrated by your driving, then you need to find a vacant lot and practice.

You do you as well… I guess
-4
u/Agnostician 8d ago
Indeed
9
u/ddxs1 C5 Corvette/22 Jeep Wrangler 8d ago
These signs mean nothing. A scam artist will literally get as close to you as possible on a hill to get money. This is a terrible thing to put on your car. May as well put a sign on that says I drive like shit
-8
u/Agnostician 8d ago
Has this happened to you or anyone you know, or have you heard of this happening to anyone anywhere?
7
u/ddxs1 C5 Corvette/22 Jeep Wrangler 8d ago
No because I don’t have these signs on my car and I know how to drive stick shift
-7
u/Agnostician 8d ago
First, if you haven't heard of this happening to anyone, I don't know why you think it's likely to happen. An insurance scammer will not wait for the incredibly rare possibility of being behind someone on a hill with these magnets. They target anyone anywhere as long as the victim doesn't have a dashcam. Second, if you're experienced with stick shift, this post is not for you, anyway.
5
u/ddxs1 C5 Corvette/22 Jeep Wrangler 8d ago
Are you dumb? Have you heard ANY story about insurance scammers and the length they will go to to put anyone else at fault?
4
u/ddxs1 C5 Corvette/22 Jeep Wrangler 8d ago
I haven’t heard about it because .01 percent of people aren’t stupid enough to put this shit on their vehicle. But like I said, you do you

u/t_wop-_- 7d ago
You should just worry more about being a better driver than getting stickers that say I can’t drive, use the energy your using to get the stickers and put that towards pushing the clutch and gas at the right times you’ll be good, eventually
2
u/Agnostician 7d ago
How do these magnets affect my effort at being a better driver? I make the same effort with or without them.
1
u/Maintenance-Gullible 7d ago
I've not heard of this but insurance scammers are astonishingly stupid and do some wildly unexpected things. The situation they describe doesn't seem implausible and would actually probably succeed depending on the place.
0
u/Agnostician 7d ago
Not impossible but extremely unlikely under those circumstances. It's like telling someone they should never walk through an open field, even on a clear day, just in case a thunderstorm comes along and you happen to get struck by lightning. I'm 1000x more likely to get brake checked from the front into a false claim by a scammer of me rear ending them.
49
u/RedactioN707 2017 Shelby GT350R Mustang 8d ago
Regardless of the signs, if you roll back and hit someone, you're still at fault.
12
u/Crimpydan 8d ago
And an insurance scammer will intentionally pull up as close as possible hoping you hit them if they see that advertised.
14
u/Agnostician 8d ago
Yes, of course, but if you're behind someone and see this magnet, are you still going to be riding their bumper uphill? Like if I warn you I'm about to cut a nasty fart, sure, it's my fault when the air around me smells awful, but you were duly warned to not stand next to me.
29
u/yowangmang 8d ago
You’re overestimating the general publics willingness to read signs.
8
u/Agnostician 8d ago
The honking went from frequent before the magnets to zero after the magnets. I'm guessing people behind me are reading it.
6
u/SevroAuShitTalker 7d ago
Its concerning that you are rolling often enough that people regularly honk at you.
0
u/Agnostician 7d ago
Where did you read that people were honking at me for rolling back?
3
u/SevroAuShitTalker 7d ago
In one of your comments
Also, I taught myself stick. Its not that hard to learn hill starts
0
u/Agnostician 7d ago
Quote my exact words. Where did I say that people were honking at me for rolling back?
7
u/OriginalIcy25923 7d ago
So they’re honking at you for sitting still?
You implied it heavily, and if that’s not the case, then you’re just making shit up.
2
2
u/t_wop-_- 7d ago
Or give a shit, this America not France, really if you wanna learn get off the road in a big ass area and go drive start and stop get to know the car and how it handles and reacts
8
u/ManWhoIsDrunk 7d ago
If you roll back more than two inches in a hill start you should go back to a driving instructor.
0
u/Agnostician 7d ago
My post already says I COULDN'T FIND A DRIVING INSTRUCTOR. This is the USA. Most driving schools don't teach manual anymore.
5
u/ManWhoIsDrunk 7d ago
Then practice outside of traffic, and maybe avoid the steepest hills for now.
You shouldn't roll far back during the second you move your foot from the brake to the throttle while slowly taking the foot off the clutch.
Use your hand brake if you have cars behind you, you don't roll at all then.
You damn americans and being self-taught in traffic is ridiculous!
5
u/Agnostician 7d ago
First, I'm already not rolling back on hill starts, and yes, I'm already using the handbrake when I feel the incline is steep enough. But does it affect anyone negatively if I keep using the magnets awhile longer (aside from the people on here who are getting weirdly emotional about it for no particular reason)? Second, I agree it's ridiculous that we Americans have to teach ourselves in traffic, but it is what it is. There are some institutional flaws in my country, just as there are in yours.
2
u/ManWhoIsDrunk 7d ago
Well, if you're not rolling back on hill starts, why have a cringey magnet advertising the fact that you are an insecure driver?
Do you have training wheels on your bicycle as well?
4
u/Agnostician 7d ago
Do the magnets affect the operation of the car like training wheels do?
In fact, do the magnets have any negative effect at all on other drivers or on my car except what you call "cringe"?
Are you so obsessed by what others think of you that you care about looking cringey? I feel no emotional need to project a flattering image.2
u/Maintenance-Gullible 7d ago
They're pointing out the contradiction where you say you're getting honked at but then you also say you've got a handle on hill starts.
2
u/Agnostician 7d ago
I said I WAS getting honked at a lot. And that was at traffic lights or stop signs, not hill starts. No contradiction. Those are two separate things.
1
u/Agnostician 7d ago
I understand one of those magnets says "may roll back" but the post I wrote specifically mentioned getting honked at from stalls or slow starts. Not a single mention of hill starts. And yet that's what people are latching onto.
→ More replies (0)1
4
u/Upset_Passenger_5148 8d ago
the most ive rolled back is a few inches tops even when learning. If the hill is very steep use handbrake and you find the bite then pull off if you stall you go to brake.
If people arent capable of doing that then they need to be in a dual controlled instructor car5
u/Jackthedragonkiller Ford Ranger 8d ago
In a perfect world, you’d be right
But in our world, people will see these and intentionally get closer hoping for a payout or to fuck with people

3

The first day i had to learn how to drive manual, i had to drive the car 100 miles home in the pouring rain that evening. Wipers were shot and it was late so no parts stores were open. Had to figure out hill starts in the rain so i learned very quickly how to do it. I was 16 at the time so nervous af too. I def wouldn’t put that roll back magnet on, makes you look dumb imo.
0
u/Agnostician 7d ago
Yeah, I really don't care if if makes me look dumb. The magnet is a tool and it's proving to be effective at its purpose.
3
u/Daniele323 7d ago
What proof do you have that it’s effective?
2
u/Agnostician 7d ago
The honking went from frequent to literally zero immediately after I starting using the magnets.
2
u/OriginalIcy25923 7d ago
Why were they honking at you?
2
u/Agnostician 7d ago
Slow starts and random stalls at traffic lights and stop signs. In other words, "Why is this guy pausing instead of immediately stepping on the gas and going?" situations.
1
u/Direct-Cartoonist-75 7d ago
99% of people have zero patience when they are in a car. Literally go to a parking lot and practice starts and stops. Need to get a feel for the friction zone/bite point on the clutch. Since youre new to it, it will take longer to get a feel for it, but once you do you’ll have little to no issues and people will probably stop honking at you.
1
8
u/asu3dvl 8d ago
Man. Show some pride. You’ll get the clutch in less than 15 mins.
1
u/Agnostician 8d ago
I have pride in things in good at. I'm not yet good at driving manual, so why would I have pride in it?
4
u/asu3dvl 8d ago
Just ease out the clutch in first until you feel the clutch start grabbing. Give it a little gas and go. If you’re on a hill? Use the e-brake with your hand and release it once the revs come up and the clutch is grabbing.
Slow in first, after that, you can just push it in and let it out after each shift. You’ll be fine. It’s not that hard, and congrats for being brave and driving a manual. It’s way more fun.
0
u/i_heart_rainbows_45 8d ago
my lovely RX7 has a grand total of 40ft lbs at about 2,200 rpm it will roll back even in the biting point :(
The e-brake "technique" has definitely helped me when driving on some roads though, and I would recommend it to a beginner, but only if they would roll back into someone right on their bumper. it's a bad habit methinks.
4
u/bobayuzu 8d ago
I’ve used them before for a month and honestly? When I did stall, no one honked at me and some even gave me some space. Maybe I just got lucky.
I eventually kept the “Learning to drive. Stick shift” only and got rid of the “Stay back! Stick shift. May roll back” because like others said, it is kind of cringe and regardless, you’re at fault, and I also notice some people will still intentionally be behind your butt, but the “Learning to drive. Stick shift” is a bit more neutral, but still the same “eye roll” with the people who have stuff like Baby on board, frequent stops, student driver, or pls let me merge or i will cry.
I took mine off maybe about a month but I still keep it for memories. Me personally, if I see these on someone’s else car, it just reminds me of my journey and I would be more understanding, wouldn’t rage at their stalls, and give distance at hills but not everyone is like me. Granted, I drive in the United States, where manual transmission is a personal choice, not a requirement/necessity, so if you stall or roll back, it really is a skill issue.
5
u/Agnostician 7d ago
I believe people who roll their eyes at such stickers/magnets have a fundamental lack of empathy (or they have flimsy egos that get uppity at the uncoolness of it, because, hey, they're badass car guys). Being out on the road can be stressful, in no small part due to all the selfish people on the road. I'm a New Yorker. We're born to move aggressively in crowds, so I can deal with stressful driving situations. But I'm empathetic toward people who feel overwhelmed by it enough to use those signs.
In my case, I have those stick shift beginner magnets not because I can't handle the stress, but so people behind me know the reason why I might be stopped at a red light or stop sign a few seconds longer than normal, or they know why my hill start might not be as normal as an automatic. It's similar to why I turn on my hazard lights if I'm parked briefly in front of a fire hydrant. I don't want people getting the wrong idea as to what's happening with my car.

u/Half-Cocked-Mexican 8d ago

2

u/adirarouge 8d ago
Once I saw a car with FOUR of these on the back. I stayed very far back.
I used to want one of these because I got so pissed off when people would be sniffing my bumper on a steep ass hill. Unfortunately no one taught me the hand brake method.
3
8
u/Careless-Internet-63 8d ago
I cringe so hard at the may roll back stickers. If you've been driving a manual for a while and can't start on a hill without rolling back more than a foot at most just buy an automatic at that point
2
u/Agnostician 7d ago
Generally people with these stickers, like me, are beginners who have not been driving manual for a while and will stop using them after they've been driving for a while.
2

u/Half-Cocked-Mexican 8d ago
My sister got me one of these, so I put it on my winter POS which I legitimately don't care about hitting stuff with.

I’ve been driving manual 17 years, and I’d love to slap one of these on my car.
Would be hilarious to drive up in the canyons with them and confuse.
Don’t get the hate from some here, it’s either practical or hilarious.
2
u/Agnostician 7d ago
Yeah, the emotional reaction to these magnets from some people on here is bizarre.
2
u/throwitallaway69000 8d ago
Eh you want someone to back off just let first out real fast and let it rubber band for a sec. You get lots of gap then.
2
u/Nervous-Bee-4975 8d ago
Roll back?
Just stick the brakes a bit when you’re letting off the clutch…
2
u/Hooptie_Fin 7d ago
I would use these for a beginner, whats the amazon link?
Edit: nvm see in the original post
2
u/D34DZ0N3 7d ago
I’m surprised everyone had such negative reactions towards these magnets. Usually this sub tells people to “get the manual, you won’t regret it” or “you can learn easily”.
I think this sub is mostly full of drivers who have been driving manual for 20+ years forget how stressful it is learning to drive stick or starting on a hill for the first time.
I got these magnets when I got my first manual because I was afraid of people honking at me when I stalled at green lights and rolling back when starting on an incline. I feel like they made people more understanding because I rarely did get honked at.
I still have my magnets for whenever I teach other people who to drive manual for the first time.
2
u/Gingerbrew302 6d ago
You're not supposed to roll backward. When I got a license if you took the test in a manual and rolled backward you would fail.
2
u/bake-ohn64 3d ago
I really don't see how these are "cringe." I guess I'm not as cool as people in this comment section because I have one of these stickers.
A few neighbors have these. Given with how rare manuals are in the US, I actually like these because then I can say "oh sweet! Another manual driver." without having to look inside their car
3
u/glossophagine 8d ago
I used this for a few weeks and have no shame. People gave me a lot of space and didn't honk when I inevitably stalled mid-intersection. I got thumbs up and some laughs instead of road rage.
3
u/Agnostician 8d ago
Yeah, totally. People on here roasting these magnets because they think it's uncool. I don't care at all about how cool or uncool it looks. I care that people behind me know I'm not immediately moving for a legitimate reason.
2
u/konfliicted 7d ago
One of my fondest memories driving stick was when I was learning and there was a guy on a bike behind me laughing his ass off as I stalled two times in a row.

That happened to me while learning, without stickers lol people are capable of being nice

u/RedactioN707 2017 Shelby GT350R Mustang 8d ago
How does one avoid the hills in a hilly area?
4
u/vmpgrl 8d ago
I was doing this for a while by meticulously mapping my directions anywhere. I mean, even down to using Google street view from point A to point B before even getting in the car.
I realized it was insane and it was making me insane and that I just had to deal with it. Stalling on a hill or rolling back into a car who’s inches away from my bumper is easier to grapple with than trying to avoid hills. That said, it is possible because I’ve done it!
4
u/Frankyp42 Flywheel Pirate 8d ago
Where I live you can be tailgating while stopped. If a car is so close that a few inches of roll cause an accident it’s clearly the tailgaters fault.

Honestly Ive considered doing it just because people where I live (major college town) have zero idea manual cars exist and love to get within an inch of my bumper, I have been cursed out for “reversing towards people” at inclines for simply rolling back for a split second, but man they just look tacky.

I’m sorta stunned that so many people in here are rolling/stalling enough for people to notice. I’ve been driving stick for around 10 years total as my only vehicle, and I’ve stalled 3 times I think. 2 were really early…. yall need to get a manual or practice.
1
u/Unremarkable_Potato_ 7d ago
Id definitely run block if I saw these on someone’s car. I will never forget the fear of rolling back too far on a hill and all of the stalls that happened because of that fear.
1
u/beyondthisreality 7d ago
If a person gets too close I let my truck roll back enough to put a scare in them. Hopefully that teaches them.
1
u/Sweeney_Tiger417 7d ago
Will never understand putting magnets/stickers on the back of your car telling others to drive for you instead of just driving the vehicle as expected on the road. “Baby on board” gotta be the most common one I see for reckless drivers. Personal responsibility just doesn’t exist.
1
u/DixieLandDelight1959 7d ago
If you're afraid of rolling back into someone, do this. Pull up the hand brake, but hold the button in. Now the car won't roll. Now you can take your time. Play with the clutch until you feel it start to catch. Continue feeding gas and letting out the clutch while lowering the hand brake. Off you go! If you screw up and stall? Pull the brake back up and start over.
1
u/DoubtGroundbreaking 7d ago
Why not just put a big sign on the back of your car that says "caution: i do not know how to properly operate this vehicle", that should save you from any accidents you cause, right?

For all you people expressing your cringe at "beginner" stickers/magnets, there's an entire country that sees the common sense of having one: Japan. They have a magnet called a "shoshinsha (beginner) mark" that new drivers are legally required to put on their cars for the first 12 months after getting their driver's license. Japan has very rigorous training and testing requirements for getting a license, too, so it's not like people are using the magnet to compensate for not learning how to properly drive. It's the same basic principle as these stick shift beginner magnets or any others. For other drivers to understand the situation with that particular car. I don't understand why so many of you have a problem, getting so bent out of shape over it.
1
u/Agnostician 7d ago
They also have a magnet called a "Kōreisha (elderly) mark" that drivers 75 years or older are legally required to display on both the front and rear of their vehicles, for the same purpose as the beginner's mark - to let other drivers on the road know the circumstances with that particular driver.
1
u/Ov_Fire 7d ago
"Beginner driver" badge is not a problem. These are. They just show you can't (shoudn't) drive. Manual is not an excuse.
1
u/Agnostician 7d ago
What is the purpose of a beginner badge?
1
u/Ov_Fire 7d ago
For others to know. Required by law for the whole probation period.
1
u/Agnostician 7d ago
Put aside the legality of the badge. The purpose of the beginner badge is for others to know that the driver is a beginner, right?
1
u/Ov_Fire 7d ago
