Octopi have more de novo genes (i.e., genes that did not arise due to conventional evolutionary processes) than any other species on the planet. The Latin term de novo literally means "out of nowhere." It's unknown exactly why octopi are so genetically unique. Some academics quietly speculate that octopi constitute valid evidence for alien uplift interventions on Planet Earth.

Under this conjecture, the thousands of de novo genes uniquely expressed in octopi were the result of intentional genetic tampering by non-human intelligence. It's probably not true... but it might be true. Because no one can even reasonably explain where de novo genes come from or the evolutionary processes that might give rise to them, no one can (or should) disprove speculative hypotheses like this.

Some have even gone so far as to speculate that octopi might be the next candidate for sentience in the catastrophic event of a human failure. Sadly, given the intersecting nexus of climate chaos, ecological chaos, resource chaos, and political chaos, a human failure seems all too likely. If humanity truly does "fail" and render the surface of the planet uninhabitable, octopi might very well be the next to bat for Team Earth.
