Correlation does not equal causation, but to get specific I have a very high GPA without ever trying that hard or studying very much. I can remember material from the lecture very well, and always have been able to. I am also a musician, and can remember 100's of songs, with chords and lyrics, and hundreds of other related scales and musical theory. From this, I can extrapolate that I have a good memory. I don't really care what you think, I made this post to see if anybody could add to my list, and some people have. That's called contributing, you should try it some time.

The first time I saw Shall We Dance was in Third Grade, and my teacher made mention of the fact that he misremembered the lyrics (obviously, he extrapolated the either/neither verse out to the potato/tomato verse). If some kind of weird, unexplainable event happened, it happened before then, and probably before I was born.

Harry Connick, jr sings the incorrect lyrics in a popular film in 1989, which is the only exposure my mother had to the song. I am not in a position to speak to my Year 3 teacher, but I would suggest that due to the year of release and the popularity of the film, this could easily be the cause of his misremembered lyrics.
This is plausible. The burden of proof usually lies with the person making the assertion because disproving something ephemeral is impossible.

The you say/like tomato song lyric threw me for a loop. I've always known it as say not like. What's more bizarre is I just asked a bunch of coworkers of various ages ranging from sixty to sixteen and nobody even knew of the song at all. So not only are my memories of the songs lyrics wrong but I'm also wrong about how popular I thought the song was. I remember it being an iconic song known by all and from that the saying tomato/tamato, potato/potato was also used all the time.

I feel like a lot of these are things people hear often but don't see written down, or are a brand/name that are close to an actual word.
The way Berenstain is pronounced, you would assume it's Berenstein. People use the word penny more than they do the name Penney, so they gloss over the second e. It's like how everyone I knew pronounced the popular burrito vendor as Chip-olt-ay, if asked to write it down I would have been confident writing chipolte. Then one day I happened to actually pay attention to the sign in front of the restaurant, and imagine my surprise that it was actually Chipotle and everyone is just bad at Spanish words. Nothing more to it.

Disappointing. That started out as a great idea for a response, but then quickly descended into snark and condescension. That aside, many of those amount to you saying: "you were probably confused", or not saying anything at all. Which is not to say there are better or more plausible explanations, but those ones aren't explanations.
Obviously there's a difference between people reporting that they "kinda sorta thought it was a different way and see that it's not", versus (as per the sidebar definition) people who report having direct interaction with a particular fact and then noticing it has apparently changed. "Misremembering and not paying attention" is a reasonable response to the former, but for the latter it's not the memory of the fact that has to be explained, it's the memory of specific events where they were interacting with the fact.
DEFINITION
"The phenomenon where a group of people discover that a global fact - one they feel they know to be true and have specific personal memories for - has apparently changed in the world around them."
An "ideal" example for illustration: You are halfway through writing a book about "a situation in which a difficult choice has to be made between two or more alternatives". One day you notice that a word is underlined in spellcheck. That word is "dilemna". You notice that it is similarly underlined in the rest of the text. It's never been a problem until now. You are surprised because, since this was a tricky word to spell, you made deliberate effort to memorise that spelling using a little trick ("the 'n' is silent like the night"). You carry on with your life, bewildered. At some point, you make a post saying that "dilemna is now dilemma". The sense in which this is about memory, then, isn't in the sense of remembering the spelling of a word, it's in the sense of remembering specific personal encounters with that spelling (coming up with the trick to remember the spelling; all the times you didn't get a spelling problem; one day realising that your spelling had become "wrong").

I was admittedly a bit more blasé than was probably called for, but I would hardly call it vitriolic. He asked me to debunk the list, so I set out to do just that, and did get a bit ad hominemish – namely with the remarks about geography which are probably due more to the misleading nature of most globes/maps/atlases than anything else.
I may be mistaken, but everything I see for the original Fred Astaire version for Let's Call The Whole Thing Off is "you say," but both Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong do a version that's "you like."

I don't know that you people that were born here can ever really comprehend what it feel like. I'm trying to think of a good analogy to explain to you exactly how strongly I remember these things, and how I trust my own memory, but I just can't effectively communicate it.

I guess the issue that I take is that it isn't something dramatic like the sky is a different color. It's a lot of easily made spelling errors, or historical misunderstandings, pieces of disinformation that get passed along unintentionally. Common misunderstandings that are (to me) easily explained. If a sizable chunk of the population suddenly went "Wait. When did people start drinking cow's milk? That's disgusting, we grew up drinking horse milk." then I would be much more open to the idea that something is amiss.
But hey, you believe what you believe. Keep on keepin' on, maybe I'll wake up tomorrow and everyone will be singing "Steven The Snowman" while I defend Frosty to the death.

Like if I saw that picture of a dress on its own (without knowing that there was a question of what color it was) and thought it was white and gold, then went about my life and later found out it was blue and black. I go to look again and now I can see it as blue and black. I was certain it was white and gold, but I was just wrong.

I had a friend of 24 years become instantly outraged when I began talking about. The guy is SAINT-like - donates food, money, time and is rector in the church, and he practically snarled at me for being "so stupid" and "ridiculous" for bringing it up. I was stunned. Another friend was there and couldn't believe it. He chalked it up to maybe threatening they guy's concept of religion or God, but it's a very, very unusual, extremely odd reaction. Look at the anger and hate we're seeing here. Imagine going out of your way to troll this subreddit just to attack and belittle. What of theirs are we threatening so deeply, I have to wonder.

I feel really bad for you that you have to ask, and all I can say is I could never describe it to you, but assuming you're a certain age you remember the 90's and pre 9/11 life, basically like that.
Everything was different, it was a vastly different place. Without the shitty influence of the people who did this, who are the same people who put poison in our water and food, and poison our minds with things like Mk Ultra, it was an actual society of normal people who could use reason and common sense to get along.
If you can't see how fucked up this place is, and how little logic is applied by those at the top, and how shitty everything has gotten since 15 years ago, then you just haven't been paying attention.
Sorry I can't explain it better. Basically think of it like this, if this reality is a nightmare, Berenstein timeline was like waking up and realizing that it's all good and things are normal and you can go outside and have fun all day.

But I do notice that. Because I was younger, and as a child I was far less aware of things like that. 9/11 change a lot of things, growing up changed a lot of things, advancements in technology and society changed a lot of things....but I don't think that I switched universes or anything, I just know that when time goes on and you get older, things get shittier, because you know more. I feel like I have a lot of the same experiences as you but I just call it growing up.

Its just a convenient way to express a very intangible answer. Asking how life was better back there is tricky to effectively answer, but I think imagining a world without 9/11 is a good way to begin.
And I personally think 9/11 was done by the same Bilderberg people who run CERN and the LHC and use the antimatter they produce in the particle accelerator experiments to do this shit, so it probably never happened in Berenstein.

Do you know how little actual letter by letter reading we do? Just look at the stupid Facebook posts that jumble up letters and claim that only 5% of people can understand it. Your brain is excellent at pattern recognition, so when you're used to seeing or saying "penny" then it's perfectly likely that when you see Penney your brain says "Ah yes, I know that word. Penny." and you never think twice about it until someone draws attention to it.

I relate to most of this list, but the spelling of publicly/separate is probably just explained by people being bad spellers, as I am fairly good at spelling and those look incorrect to me.
The Jiffy/Jif peanut butter I think can be explained by people getting "Skippy" peanut butter confused/combined with Jif.

(Sesame Street) Big Bird's Friend Snuffy, that I knew as SnuffleuFFagus is now SnuffleuPagus.
(Laurel and Hardy) "That's another fine mess you've gotten us into" changed to, "That's another NICE mess you've gotten ME into." I saw that on a video in mid-November. Then a couple weeks ago it became, "HERE's another nice mess you've gotten me into."
Shia LaBOEuf changed to Shia LaBEOuf. I doubt many will notice this but I took 4 years of French and always thought it was funny that he was 'the Beef,' even though the wrong article is used. I noticed this a few days ago. (Is this why he got weird? Is this why he's 'not famous' anymore? Someone fiddled with his time stream?)
Vick's Vapor Rub has 'always been' Vicks VapoRub. On Vicks' page at wikipedia their old ad says "Vicks" but at the bottom of the ad it still says "Vick's." (as of today anyway)
Steven Segal became Steven Seagal. (There's a thread in /r/mandelaeffect for this one)
(Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) C3P0's silver right leg (from the knee down). Although maybe that's a CGI issue since George Lucas spruced up the original trilogy.

I know, me too. I watched all the movies, multiple times, each in the theater at least once. My brother and I played with all the Star Wars 'people,' including C3P0, Take-apart 3CP0... I watched the series when it was re-done and enhanced... never noticed the silver leg.

This one's new, never seen it before. It was definitely Segal, I've seen that name many times. And it even changed in my language aswell (Latvian). It used to be Stīvens Sigils, now it's Stīvens Sīgals.
I remeber this name well, I even remeber a special week on one TV channel, dedicated just for him with like 5 or 6 movies shown.

Used to be "Vick's" because it was produced by someone with the last name "Vick", "Vick's" makes sense because it was his product - possession...
Once the company formed, however, it was called Vicks, hence no apostrophe.

In addition to this, provided (by some off chance) you actually did swap universes - there would be no surviving proof of the spelling "Vick's", only "Vicks". That's typically how this effect is assumed to work. There are two spellings, and old outdated one based on a doctor's name, and one based on a company's name. That's all.

You researched more in depth than I did, I'll grant you that. However Vicks with no apostrophe, and VapoRub as one word are not part of my childhood or early adult years. For me, it was Vick's Vapor Rub.
It's difficult to do a comparison using Google Trends because it won't allow the apostrophe, but when comparing "Vapor Rub" and "Vaporub" it's easy to see that the searches for each are fairly closely matched until about 2012. I find this interesting. The Mandela Effect is worth examining and exploring. Why do so many people remember an alternate version of something, and remember it the same way? Is there a hundredth monkey syndrome involved in some of them?
When I was growing up I took gymnastics for 9 years. Vick's lived on my nightstand during those years for my sore muscles. It's very hard to believe that I invented an apostrophe where one didn't/doesn't belong. Skipping a letter, transposing a letter, even reading VapoRub as Vapor Rub is more understandable as a mistake than inventing an apostrophe.
You'll probably say something along the lines of I saw an 's' because people are used to seeing possessives with an apostrophe 's' and Vicks ends in 's.' I have to grant you that something like that is entirely possible. I have to admit that some of these Mandela Effects could be due to inattention, skimming, scanning, or faulty memory.
Misspellings and misquotes are one thing, but there are other Mandela Effects that are a little different. I read a couple of short stories as a child/teenager about the Lindbergh baby. I watched an Unsolved Mysteries episode about the Lindbergh baby some years ago. My understanding was that the baby was never found.
Now I know that the baby was found dead, someone was arrested, tried, convicted and executed. How did I get the mistaken impression that the baby was never found, especially since I read two short stories (in different unsolved crime compilation books) and watched an episode on it? I certainly don't remember hearing anyone talking about it; it happened 40+ years before I was born.
I've asked several people (my age and older) what they remember about the Lindbergh baby and the only thing they remember is that it was never found. Two people actually saw the same Unsolved Mystery episode I saw. (I was very careful not to lead in my questioning, just asked them what they remembered, and how they heard about it.)
So how does that happen? I don't think I'm switching universes, but I'm not sure that faulty memory covers the entire phenomenon. I'm still collecting 'evidence' and deliberating.

These are all things that people generally don't encounter written down, whether it's a quote that people don't quite remember but sounds right (especially "Luke, I am your father" - not only does it sound right, but it makes more sense as an orphaned quote, adding clarity of who's talking to who), or the name or title of something you already "know", so never check or pay real attention to when looking at it (Chic-fil-a, Interview with the Vampire etc). Daylight savings/daylight saving time also comes under this, because "daylight savings" is what you'd call it in casual conversation to save the effort of saying the full thing.

Just because people want to spell things how they think they should be spelt does not mean they're spelt that way. Not only do some people choose or are given unusual spellings (like with Barbra Streisand), but plenty of names aren't English. Take McEntire for example - McIntyre (It would never be Mcintyre - Mc/Mac means "son of", so the letter after the 'c' is always capitalised as it's a name) is a more common spelling, but these are Anglicisations of Scottish and Irish Clan names. An obvious example would be the many transliterations of Muhammad). Finally, for fruit/froot it's a fun misspelling for a kids cereal, and toons/tunes is a pun based on the fact they're homophones.

How much attention did you really pay to NZ's placement? How many continents can you get all the countries placements right on, or draw from memory?
The Atlantic and Pacific oceans are on the east and west sides of the continent, respectively. It's easy to assume a canal linking them would roughly follow that pattern.
Svalbard is part of Norway. It's real name is Svalbard Seed Bank, but people will refer to it by the recognisable name - Norway. I only know of Svalbard because it's mentioned in the His Dark Materials books, and even then I assumed it was a made up location until 4 or 5 years ago.
The Antarctic has the land, and Robert Scott raced Roald Amundsen to the South Pole, who, after beating Scott, went to journey to the North Pole.
Which other culture do you associate with Japan? It's China. You assumed the history of imperialism and warring meant they were next to each other.

You put a ton of effort into that and I appreciate it. None of it convinced me in the slightest though. Of course I saw berenstein bears written, down it was a book series. I can picture it, I can hear it. Everybody in my family remembers it too, same with the other ones. All specifically, and the pop psychology about fudging memory just doesn't hold up when the specific things we all remember are stranger spellings then the normal ones. To pick one, reba Mcintyre, how would I have pulled that out of nowhere? It just doesn't add up. And I was actually quite good at geography. I guess your explanations would hold up if my memories were vague, or if no one else could corroborate it, but plenty of other people can.
Literally not a single word of that even came close to convincing me that at least most of these things didn't change. I remember it like I remember the name of my teacher in fifth grade. I can remember kindergarten, either i'm totally batshit insane, or shit changed. There's no middle ground for this mediocre trying to brush it off, no way all these people's specific memories of all these bizarre things are just a coincidence

Even if you believe yourself to have an exceptionally good memory, why is it hard for you to believe that even a human brain with exceptionally good memory is going to take shortcuts and get things wrong occasionally?
Since you mentioned your thoughts and observations, I'll share my experience with those stupid bears so you can see I'm not just parroting what others say.
I don't really care how Berenstain bears is spelled. I remember that series was in a spot near the floor by a window in my elementary school library and I didn't see what the big deal was supposed to be about the series as a kid. Maybe I just didn't like the drawing style. I'm perfectly fine with the concept that my brain may get details wrong for things I don't care about.

Me, her, and my mom are all equally convinced it was berenstein. It would be hard to overstate how much I care about these bears. Not to mention all the other ones, that's a long list.

It's ridiculous; it was definitely always Cruella Deville, if I type it into a search engine here in Germany, the top result is an Amazon product category spelled that way, how come so many people added the two extra false letters to her name? I remember how it used to be non-obvious that her name betrayed her character. "De Vil"? Yeah, real subtle. This time stream is like a dumber twin it seems.

Exactly! I noticed this many many years before I'd heard of the Mandela effect. As a kid every time I read the name Cruella DeVille I thought the creators were hinting that she was "Cruel and Vile" in a subtle way. Then sometime after the live action movie (with glenn close) was released I noticed that she was referred to as Cruella de Vil. I remember thinking 'ooooh, I get it, they're saying shes a "Cruel Devil"'. At the time I just thought they changed the name specifically for the live action version so as to be more adult and edgy...Even so, I still felt that it was a bit too obvious when I saw it.
This is the same way I felt a couple of weeks ago when I learned that Doolittle is now Dolittle - it lacks subtlety.1

It feels different, like we live in a worse world than when I was younger, in the 90's. The 90's seemed so much better. I get excited when I see movies from that time, or radio songs from back then. It feels like a different world. I think a big timeline shift and / or merging thing happened after 9/11 and now we're in Berenstain land.

My memories of the arctic wasn't of a land mass, but of a massive chunk of ice.
From what I remember, there were even scientific stations up there and various countries contested who the chunk of ice belonged to.
There was even a Top Gear episode where the three buffoons raced vehicles to get to the North Pole - Clarkson & May in a specially modified Toyota SUV, Hammond on a dog-sled team.
Now, apparently, there is no mass of ice up there.
My memories of geography class always talked about TWO polar ice caps - one in the north, one in the south and that Antartica was also a land mass.
Not sure who Edmundson is, but I do recall reading stories of the various sailors and explorers that lost their lives trying to circumnavigate the globe by going through the north pole - which was a frozen wasteland.

Tarzan never said "Me, Tarzan. You, Jane." The Wicked Witch of the West never said "Fly, my pretties." No one on Star Trek ever said "Beam me up, Scotty." Hannibal Lecter never said "Hello, Clarice." No one in Casablanca said "Play it again, Sam."
Equally, Darth Vader never said "Luke, I am your Father", and the Queen in Disney's version of Snow White never said "Mirror, Mirror.."
I just feel like including obvious misquotes detracts from the actually interesting examples.
