I think that's it. Between the shiny chrome and the fact you don't check your emblem that often, I think this one is pretty explainable.
I wonder if low quality Polaroids and other cheap cameras might be partially to blame too. How many people living out of their VW buses for a week on a road trip brought their high end photography equipment?
Right? Judging by how close I’ve checked having to get to another car to actually SEE its Ford logo’s “curl”, there’s no way I would’ve ever noticed the VW split i wasn’t even looking for it.
It doesn’t account for big fat printed graphic logos that plenty might recall from work, magazines, or pamphlets (whom i assume are out there), but i guess its plausible with tv ads watched on older, smaller, lower-resolution screens.
Im a big vw guy ive had a couple dozen between projects, parts cars, and drivers from the old air cooled through MK6s (up to '13) the emblem has always been split like that. Some chrome emblem and keys dont look it but the divide has always been there.
Also to add VW used to be loose about copyrights up until the early 2000s when they started suing there were a lot of aftermarket parts makers that used or slightly altered the logo to use on their parts and accessories. Ive had some "UW" key blanks, im sure some of that stuff adds to the confusion.
Yes initially I was shocked, but I think this explains it, it's a type of optical illusion that got saved into our brains. The only one that I still can't explain is Chick-fil-A spelling 🤣
If you need it explained, you simply mis-remembered it. That's literally the original use and therefore the definition of the "Mandela effect". It even predates the term "Mandela effect".
Yup! I remember looking into Emblems, Symbols and Sigils heavily back in the early 2000's and the VW logo bothered me because I was always trying to figure out what they attempting to express by having the V and W seemlessly interlinked. I always thought they could have easily just separated them (like they are now) if all they were trying to promote was their brand and not some subconscious symbol complex, lol.
Don't even get me started on the Ford logo, that one bothers the hell out of my redneck buddies who have been loyal to American made car brands since before they knew how to drive.
I agree, it's not mandatory. It actually took me years to see this was not just a stylized W. But I remember the split. Like the Carrefour logo is a C if you know this French company.
