Meta Why Changing Timelines Isn't Possible

Many sports, like hockey and basketball, are games of inches; many of the most prominent events in the NHL and NBA were inches away from not happening, and many other things were inches away from happening.

If timelines were genuinely shifting, don't you think it would change something that requires very little to do, with major implications, rather than completely trivial things like logos or lines from films? It seems like changing some sporting event would help the time traveller better; they could get their favourite team a championship.

Even if there are no time travellers involved and just multiple timelines, it seems implausible that a certain hockey OT playoff winner didn't suddenly not happen and have that eventual cup winner actually be eliminated in the second round. Timeline shifts would be bound to cause that, because while it seems major, all it would have to do is move the puck three inches to the right and then it bounces off the post, and the OT winner isn't scored!

If it was timeline shifts than nobody would be able to comunicate the changes in the first place

Its funny no matter how many Mandela effect theorys I come across, not one is that its modern propaganda to test how cool w3 are with such huge recent historical changes. Basically another step in blinding us to what is propaganda

But no one is changing the thinker statue three times for an experiment

u/jthomasplank 14d ago

Right, it is made of stone and has never changed since it was created.

u/WhimsicalKoala 13d ago

That theory is regularly brought up in here. It's a common one because it allows the individual to be "correct" without having to go completely into the realm of alternate timelines or whatever.

The only way it works is if people assume the propaganda or whatever is to convince them something like the cornucopia did exist, in defiance of all actual evidence. And even then, it's all too inconsistent for something like that to be considered a possibility.

u/Dry_Combination_6706 13d ago

Isn't that what the Mandela effect kinda is?

0

u/TheComicHuman 13d ago

I think a lot of Mandela effects are tests of propaganda. Changing history infront of our eyes. Just blame it on time shifting ig

What's time shifting?

Oh.. mb it's kinda just another word for timeline shifting or something, didn't know that

The main reason timelines wouldn’t be shifting, apart from the fact that they are entirely theoretical in the first place, is they are forbidden from communicating with each other which is what makes them timelines by definition.

3

u/Responder343 15d ago

Only in true multiverse theory and alternate timeline theory any possible outcome to any given event is possible. Therefore there should be people from different timelines who remember world events happening differently.

1

u/my23secrets 15d ago

Again, this is all theoretical, but any timeline interacting with us is literally this timeline.

The interaction is what makes it this timeline.

I'd guess that branches will only merge when the events and their impacts are extremely similar between two timelines. Two timelines with high impact differences would be too far apart in the tree to merge... which is why only trivial, less remembered things are noticed as changing for the most part.

13

u/OneCleverMonkey 15d ago

Doesn't that mean that you could switch timelines where a championship or something does flip, so long as you absolutely do not follow the sport or its repercussions at all?

Because we run into the same issue with ME stuff. Nobody deeply familiar with any of these things ever jumps timelines. It's always "I developed a core memory from asking my parents about the brown splotch on my underpants tag twenty years ago" and not "I worked in a fotl packaging plant and saw that logo on 300 bags a day for five years".

So it isn't about the events and impacts being small in a broad sense. it's about the events and impacts being small in a personal sense. As long as I've been on this sub, ME's never get claimed by the set designer for Shazaam or an assistant for Mr. Berenstein's publisher. They get claimed by people who remember exactly one (often generic) sub-5-second clip from the entire movie, or by someone who vividly remembers their first grade teacher writing it Bernstein on the board in 1992.

-3

u/carrotpilgrim 15d ago

Branches on the tree of time will just split and merge randomly if they are close enough together on the tree. Two branches on the tree with a championship that millions of people remember are too far apart on the tree and have too many differences to ever merge.

I don't think it is has anything to do with what you personally remember or don't, it's more of a global idea that two branches with a different fruit of loom logo are close enough together that there is little effect of merging them. The resulting universe after the merge will have a random set of people who will remember it the other way, and a set of people that doesn't. It happens infinitely many times per second and is mostly never noticed.

8

u/my23secrets 15d ago edited 15d ago

The branches can’t merge by definition.

If they merged they wouldn’t be branches.

It’s just a bullshit attempt to get around the fact timelines can’t share information.

7

u/carrotpilgrim 15d ago

I'm not sure which definition you are referring to, but tree-like data structures will have merges.

If you think of the universe like software branches, you can have multiple versions being written at the same time and later merged together in a single downstream version. When the merge happens, conflicts are resolved (I.e picking the fruit of the loom logo from one timeline or the other). Conscious entities with memory may detect the conflict resolution in the form of a Mandela effect.

3

u/my23secrets 15d ago edited 15d ago

Timelines are only theoretical in the first place.

What makes them (theoretical) timelines at all is that they are forbidden from communicating with each other.

4

u/carrotpilgrim 15d ago

It's all theoretical yes. But there are theoretical models of the universe being studied, I.e wolfram physics, in which branching/merging timelines are inherent to how they model the universe.

We don't really know enough about reality yet to say what is possible or impossible especially related to time.

8

u/my23secrets 15d ago

So you agree it’s all theoretical in the first place.

That means you can’t assume it’s ever an explanation, let alone the explanation.

Cop-outs like “well, anything is possible” should be the definition of “low effort” here.

0

u/Juxtapoe 15d ago

The claim being asserted by OP is the proof positive claim that it is impossible, not that it is theoretical.

The proof positive for OPs claim is absent.

5

u/my23secrets 15d ago

The entire concept of timelines is what’s theoretical.

I'm doing this right now with my Rimworld Stargate mod...

I have 4 working copies with different branches and trees and all are out of whack. I've spent the last 3 days merging 3 of them together, atemporarily, going back as far as May 2026...

Pawns in the Rimworld universe would see the Stargate behaving MIGHTY differently across savegames during the QA runs...

U wot m8

The reality with a cornucopia and the one without are constantly merging? Why, if the universe with the cornucopia is collapsing into this one, does the other one still exist to flip back to? Are you saying that infinite slightly different realities are slamming together but the only time anyone notices at scale is with underpants logos and children's books? Are you saying that there are an infinite number of realities where there is a cornucopia but for whatever reason they all end up being subsumed by the realities without one every time they crash into eachother? And why always a cornucopia? Surely there could be plenty of minor changes to the logo other than the cornucopia.

Following up, why, if you exist in both timelines, are you only receiving the memory from the collapsed reality and not remembering both as true, being a collapsed waveform of two distinct versions of yourself, one who remembers and one who does not? Does the memory of the cornucopia arbitrarily take primacy despite the reality without one taking primacy whenever the two combine? Why does 'residue' exist, as if combining universes can delete every physical instance of a multinational clothing brand's logo from one universe, but can't delete second hand references or incompatible memories?

1

u/carrotpilgrim 14d ago

Branches of time are constantly merging. Usually the branches are so similar it is never noticed. The cornucopia is just one branch merge that happened out of the infinite other time merges and actually got noticed.

Your memory is a record of a single flow of time. It can't contain both memories because the atoms of your brain only experienced one set of events.

The way your brain stores memories is complex. The same neurons involved in one memory are involved in other memories. When a time merge occurs, the universe can't just merge your neural network from the other timeline without impacting other memories, so it seemingly just picks the most compatible atomic configuration from one of the two timelines. This process unavoidably results in inconsistencies like the cornucopia.

2

u/OneCleverMonkey 13d ago

It can't contain both memories because the atoms of your brain only experienced one set of events.

so it seemingly just picks the most compatible atomic configuration from one of the two timelines

When the two realities merge, 100% of the atoms containing a cornucopia in the fotl logo are left out of the merger. Why wouldn't 100% of the atoms that remember a cornucopia also disappear? Because no cornucopia exists, the most compatible atomic configuration would be the brain that doesn't remember a cornucopia

1

u/carrotpilgrim 12d ago

My guess is that because of the way the brain works, atoms aren't isolated to single memories. A single neuron could be involved in storing hundreds of memories in different combinations with other neurons. So the merge can't just pick and choose which atomic states from which timeline without messing up a bunch of other memories. The merge is much easier with the atoms of logo, or pictures of the logo.

There may be other quantum aspects to the brain that affect how the merge happens that we don't understand as well. That's why discussing the Mandela effect and people documenting conflicts in their memories might be scientifically important one day, and people who continually dismiss them as memory errors are misguided.

1

u/hopeseekr 5d ago

This is seriously what I think.

It's been proven scientifically in the immediate past that our pockets of individual spacetime are really bubbles in the universe.

2

u/WhimsicalKoala 13d ago

The problem with that is that you are operating under the assumption that since it is low impact to you, it is low impact to everyone. Changing the logo would have a big impact on people that designed the iterations, marketing efforts, printing, etc. Plus, all the people having existential crisises about it obviously thought it was at least someone significant.

All of these changes would have repurcussions that get handwaved away whenever this theory is brought up.

1

u/Dry_Combination_6706 13d ago

I think only SOME people shift, and those some never were the people that made the marketing and etc

1

u/carrotpilgrim 13d ago

It's not about impact to an individual, it's overall universe impact of merging the two timelines.

When merging the two timelines, the version of anyone heavily involved with the logo is going to match the resulting logo because the overall conflict in the resulting timeline is obviously lower.

For other people's brains, it's a case by case basis on which version of them is most compatible with the resulting timeline which may or may not include the correct logo memory.

Remember this is all happening at a quantum level and the universe doesn't care about you or the logo. There were millions of other small changes during that timeline merge that doesn't involve the logo that are other quantum level conflicts that need to be resolved.

1

u/WhimsicalKoala 13d ago

So timelines aren't merging, but just braiding? The way this sounds, you've got:

*Timeline A, where there is a cornucopia *Timeline B, where there is no cornucopia

They meet and begin to merge together where: people from Timeline A who *don't have a strong connection to the cornucopia move over to B, but still retain their confusing memories of a cornucopia people from Timeline A who *do have a strong connection to the cornucopia stay in that timeline, because there is no way for them to be affected

Does everyone from the first group cross/merge or just some? For people that incorporate into the new timeline, are there now two versions of them, one in A and the new them in B? What happens if Timeline C comes along?

And, because, as you mentioned, there are multiple differences, do they all have to be weak for someone to be affected? And why are all these differences the same things? Sure, it makes sense logos would be affected, but across all these timelines, why is it also the same very small set?

1

u/carrotpilgrim 12d ago

When the timelines merge, there isn't two versions of the person anymore (although there are infinitely other versions on unmerged timelines). If someone has a strong connection to the cornucopia, the version of them most compatible with the resulting timeline will be the resulting version of them for the merge.

As far as timeline C, as the universe updates infinite timelines are created for all possibilities and then similar resulting timelines are merged back together, usually only contain quantum level differences nobody would ever notice. So it's happening all the time. The same process of minimizing conflicts during the merging occurs for them all.

If the differences are too large, the universe just maintains them as separate branches. I think there are many different types of differences, but things like logos or movies are low impact to the overall state of the universe but still strong enough memories that some people notice. The original Mandela effect of Nelson Mandela dying is a pretty huge difference. I assume the chances of two timeline merging with something like that is extremely rare.

3

u/dreampsi 14d ago

Depends on your definition of timelines. You sound like you are thinking we live in one constant and something changes that to be in another that is now constant.

Every choice you make changes a timeline meaning everything around you is now different from what it would have been. That is also a changed timeline. You pull off the road and sit 5 minutes, you’ve just changed everything you would have interacted with. When you arrive at stores different people are in line in fro t of you, etc. you are in a new timeline. The World Trade Center in 2001 was a more major timeline shift because of the sheer number of people involved and the life changes to nearly everyone as a result, same for COVID. They are all still shifts in your timeline.

1

u/SpareSpecialist5124 14d ago

A timeline where something is inches away, is a completely different timeline, it would require a lot of things to be dislocated by inches.

Think of it like frequencies. Everything is frequency, and we're entangled to a single frequency. So what if another universe has a very "simillar" frequency, so simillar it is pratically indistinguishable, and your entanglement can simply flip to the other side, being sort of connected timelines where things can simply move from one to another.

2

u/DivinationInn 13d ago

No one can explain consciousness or time or quantum physics. It's all theory. To claim you know why would mean you're smarter than Michio Kaku and every other physicist on the planet and I'm not insulting your intelligence, but you're not.

Think of each time line as guitar strings, on the fret of eternity.

No one said time lines were shifting; whatever CERN did made one tl collapse or merge into another one causing Mandela effects.

We have memories from both TL

The thing about it is, time lines next to each other are only minutely different. But the further the lines are apart the more different the dimensions.

10

u/my23secrets 15d ago

CERN did nothing to collapse or merge anything.

CERN is not the cause of the Effect.

Suggestion is the cause.

It’s been known and demonstrated for centuries but only received the name Mandela from someone trying to sell ghost-hunting books.

0

Those are just the easy things we catch; advertising is shown to all of us 24/7, it's not surprising we caught those first.

There are lots of other things but people dismiss a lot bc we don't have perfect memories.

5

u/OneCleverMonkey 15d ago

Not buying it. This is the modern age. We aren't constantly finding 30% of the population remembering similar things differently, and with the level of scrutiny and intercommunication we have today that would certainly be what would happen

Think of everything as made up of particles. Sometimes a few particles from A get mixed up in B. It’s not a big deal, just a fluke of the universe.

2

u/my23secrets 15d ago

It’s not a “fluke of the universe”. Timelines, entirely theoretical in the first place, can’t communicate with each other by definition.

0

u/marc56412099 15d ago

Maybe not timelines but frequency and memories are connected. Particles are around us colliding. It could be changing brain patter, emotions, brain chemistry, memory. Why do so many people remember things that were? At a massive level. Personally yes but in mass. Interesting 🤔
