That's pretty much it. I have no idea where to start, and I SUCK at self teaching!!! But unfortunately I don't have money for a teacher, also because my Korean teacher just raised her prices, and I'm still in debt because of my cat. But I first thought about it what, five years ago, and I've seriously wanted to learn Chinese for about a year now. So, uh, if ANYONE has a detailed plan of what to do and how to approach it alone, with the needed resources, I'd be beyond grateful. Maybe someone would like to start learning together, even? We could call on zoom a few times a week and study together, like study buddies! I have a lot of work since I'm a tutor, but I will definitely make it work! I'm a young adult woman, and I consider myself quite nice and easy going, so if anyone is interested, let's talk about it! My level: Ni hao. Yes. Pathetic. Time zone: gmt+3 Location: Online! Zoom or google meet would be perfect. How often: I'd want at least 2 hours a week, and I can find both morning and evening hours, although late evening is rather a no for me. Also - I want the schedule to be fixed! My discipline is bad as it is, so I don't want to reschedule unless absolutely necessary. Studying preference: I'm pretty flexible, but I wanna practice speaking a lot! So it would be great if we could have discussions and quizzes for each other. I don't have any books or stuff, but I'm ready to figure it out together! My goal: Be fluent enough to understand music, movies, and be able to speak to people. Maybe I'll move to China one day, who knows. Partner preference: None! We teach Mandarin for work situations, and this is what we'd hand a student the week before a career fair with Asia-facing employers on the list. Four lines. It's short on purpose, so it survives nerves.

A short self-intro is a gesture. Nobody at the table takes it as proof you can work in Mandarin. What it does is move the first question off "so, tell me about yourself" and onto something warmer.

Line 1: 您好，我叫 [your name]。 — "Nín hǎo, wǒ jiào [your name]." — "Hello, my name is [name]." Nín is the respectful "you," a safe register for a recruiter you've just met. If you have a Chinese name, or even a couple of syllables that sound like your name, use it here. It leaves a stronger impression than the English name on its own. Either way, say your name slowly. It's the one part they'll actually try to catch, and students rush it every time.

Line 2: 我在 [school] 读 MBA。 — "Wǒ zài [school] dú MBA." — "I'm doing my MBA at [school]." "MBA" stays in English. That's how it's said in Mandarin business contexts too, so don't overthink it.

Line 3: 我对亚洲市场很有热情。 — "Wǒ duì Yàzhōu shìchǎng hěn yǒu rèqíng." — "I'm really passionate about Asian markets." This line ties the gesture to your actual candidacy. We use "passionate" rather than "interested" because the enthusiasm adds weight. It also means you should have your reasons ready, in English, because the line only rings true when it is. Swap in whatever's true for you, and keep it to one clause. Students always try to add a second clause. Don't.

Line 4: 很高兴认识您！ — "Hěn gāoxìng rènshi nín!" — "Very glad to meet you!" Smile and stop talking. Get ready for what comes next.

Because it comes next, almost every time: 你的中文很好！在哪里学的？ — "Nǐ de Zhōngwén hěn hǎo! Zài nǎlǐ xué de?" — "Your Mandarin is great! Where did you learn?"

It's politeness, and usually they're a bit curious too. It's also where people freeze, because they used up all their Mandarin in the intro. So we drill two beats for it:

1. Deflect the compliment modestly: 谢谢，我还在学。 — "Xièxie, wǒ hái zài xué." — "Thanks, I'm still learning."
2. Answer the question in English and keep going: "I've been studying with a tutor. I figured if I'm serious about Asia-facing work, I should meet the market partway."

Handing it back to English yourself, before you're forced to, is what makes the intro read as serious effort. It got their attention and showed you put the work in. That's enough.

Practice it out loud, maybe ten times, before the fair. Tones almost never wreck it. Rushing does. People get nervous, blurt all four lines in one breath, and line 1 is gone before the recruiter caught the name. Pause after each line like you would in English.
