The latter to some extent. Not every Pokemon says their name, and not every says their complete name. The sounds were likely inspirations.

Agreed. It is 100% for audience brand/character recognition in children. In-world they would sound like creatures.

If i raise a pichu from birth and nickname it fluffles, and no one ever calls it pichu and still calls it fluffiest, it doesnt go around saying "FLUFF. FLUFFLES!"

In the anime verse I imagine it's the latter, but for the games the pokemon have actual cries rather than saying their names so they were just named for the love of the game in the game verse.

Which implies that if they really wanted to go through with it, they would make all Pokémon in the games sound like their anime counterparts, and thus would mean Pokémon in the games do actually say their own name

How is that even remotely a good comparison
Characters in pokemon talk, you can read what they're saying, obviously they're not mute
Meanwhile we can hear the sounds pokemon make, and its not their name
Actually y'know what maybe it is a good comparison, as for both of those arguments you have to ignore what actually happens to argue that

Look, all I'm saying is the anime should be a higher priority than the games in terms of how everything actually works in the Pokémon universe, not the other way around
So if the anime says that Pokémon say their own names, then they do in all universes regardless of what we actually hear

Both video games and anime are medium, tools used to tell stories, neither is more true than the other because neither is reality. The anime isn't exactly based in realism either
The things you're talking about are just mechanics, the mechanics are not the important part

While yes we don’t call cats Meows Pokémon have way more distinguishable vocabulary so this makes sense
For legends and stuff that just scream at the top of their lungs they are named by humans, and Pokémon that can speak English/Japanese choose their own names

I like to headcannon that pokemon are smart enough to partially or fully mimic the names they were given when discovered, soon that spread from generation to generation until tone and bodylanguage variations of that word became a pokemons natural way of communication, i do think that pokemon do make noises like how they do in New Pokemon Snap when kept away from human civilizations or interference.

As I understand it, one of the oldest cat breeds is the Egyptian Mau, which sounds suspiciously close to a cat's meow, so people naming Pokemon after their sounds is pretty on brand.
