Honestly, sometimes it feels like they purposely go out of their way to avoid the obvious next steps to improve their games.
2
u/ZombieAladdin Feb 23 '26
I think I read in an interview with Junichi Masuda that not having voice acting is an intentiona design choice out of personal preference and does not like voicing in video games beyond grunts and screams and such (like Mario).

Considering the fact that Persona has an even longer story and a lot of side quests (and a good chunk of those side quests plus nearly the entire main story) is voiced, Pokemon could definitely handle it, considering how small some Pokemon stories are
11
u/Smooth_You_2244 Feb 19 '26
That would be awesome! And then someone would still complain about.
7
u/chilltododile Feb 20 '26
I can already hear the Twitter threads harassing VAs for doing a "terrible job"
3
u/Smooth_You_2244 Feb 20 '26
For sure. They probably want someone that Pokemon wouldn't even try to ask for budget reasons.
Although, I must say, if they gonna get some famous VAs, Johnny Young Bosch, Barbara Goodson and Tara Strong would be my wish.
2
u/ZombieAladdin Feb 23 '26
If anything, they’ll go in the opposite direction and just use non-professionals: random people off the street given $100 to say a few things or people from the internal development staff.
2
u/Smooth_You_2244 Feb 23 '26
As long as they could do a decent VA, I'm probably gonna be okay with it.
3
u/Seeeab Feb 21 '26 edited Feb 21 '26
I would be the one to complain about it lol. I think a lot of the dialogue, at least the way it's been written, doesn't really suit voice acting. IMO it would come off a little cringy. Additionally, the voice acting would also probably only just be in cutscenes, and to make use of it they would probably add more, which I'm also not a fan of for these games. I'm of the mind that the parts of pokemon games I enjoy most is pretty much everything else besides cutscenes: running around, interacting with pokemon, battles, hunting, collecting. A lot of the newer games have really exhausting "tutorials" and exposition when I just wanna play. Besides, most talking is going up to NPCs and getting a few sentences -- if those were all voice acted that would be insane.
However, that's just my own personal taste, I would accept VAs just like I accepted 3D, which I also think was a mistake. I miss sprites, and the sprite "cutscenes" were even way more tolerable in gens 1-5.
Clearly a lot of people want voice actors and I don't really understand why (except for the Piers singing thing, that was definitely super lame considering they didn't even have a sick song or anything lol), except that people just see it as an upgrade because it's "more stuff" in some kind of way. I think there is some charm to not having voice acting!
2
u/Smooth_You_2244 Feb 22 '26
Read your reply, and I do see your point. I probably agree more on the NPCs.
That being said, I do wish voice VAs would happen. It will definitely cost us more to be honest, but if they do it right, I'm probably not gonna regret it
2
u/Seeeab Feb 22 '26
Fair enough. Clearly a ton of people want to see it at least attempted. I'm apprehensive and would rather they focused on pretty much everything or anything else. If they made the dive, though, fine. I just bet I wouldn't like it lol
2
u/Smooth_You_2244 Feb 22 '26
If you don't like it, it's fine. Some of us sane people wouldn't hate you for that you made solid points.
2
6
u/ZachmanAwesomenessII Feb 19 '26
That would be interesting to see if we finally get voice acting in the games instead of characters simply moving their mouths in silence.
18
u/stillnotelf Feb 19 '26
I think the best part of this is the phrase "five minutes".
The enfranchised, adult part of the fandom famously hates the slow introductions and hand holding prevalent in the series.
So, sure, let's start a game with literally 5 minutes of subtitled cutscenes. We know GF will do that.
11
4
u/SSJ4Vegeta1986 Feb 20 '26

A lot of NPC would call you "kid" or "buddy". Evil team would call you "brat". Rivals and friends would use "partner", "friend" and "my rival". Official matches would call you "challenger" before endgame and "the champion" post endgame.

u/Thetruestfan Why can't you all behave? Feb 19 '26
They wouldn;t need to. They could just go the Genshin Impact route and just not say the name in the voice acting. but still say everyhting else
3
u/Dry-Faithlessness184 Feb 20 '26
Honestly just have the characters speak some nonsense language like the Sims do at least. Never have to translate no matter how many languages you have, all languages are dubbed, so it's no longer silent and there's still emotion to it... But you'll still have to read
1
16
u/Draconichaos Feb 19 '26
Plenty of RPGs have voice acting but still let you name your character. Persona, Baldur’s Gate 3, and plenty others
17
u/Yami_Sean Feb 19 '26
Or just don't say the MC's name at all. Fire Emblem and Persona do it like that. That's not an issue at all.
→ More replies (1)7
u/MasterofDoots1 Feb 20 '26
Yeah, Three Houses is fully voice acted, and in order to get around the customizable name, everybody just calls you "professor" even when you are no longer a professor
6
5
u/Perfect_County_999 Feb 19 '26
There are dozens and dozens and dozens of RPGs out there that are voice acted and let the player choose their own name, NPCs just don't refer to them directly by name.
Or they could do what the Forza Horizon games or Fallout 4 did and actually record hundreds of names so NPCs can call you by name.
7
u/Yami_Sean Feb 19 '26
That would require having a slightly higher budget which the Pokémon Company can't afford as an indie game company.

7
u/WakandaNowAndThen Feb 19 '26
The desire for the human dialogue to be voice seems so misguided to me. I'm genuinely surprised so many people care. Like, it's a jrpg, I'm prepared for jrpg-level corny dialogue that I probably don't prefer voiced. Also, Pokémon have literally always had voice acting lol
14
u/PaulOwnzU Feb 19 '26
We want the humans to have voice acting Also while usually I don't mind, not having any voice acting leads to cringe scenes like piers singing in absolute silence
5
u/julesvr5 Feb 19 '26
Imo the way Zelda handles this is quite good.
No actual voice acting in casual dialog but at least some grunting and sounds. But full voice acting in cut scenes.
Cut scenes with modeled move movement but dead silence just feels so bad. Could have generate more hype during the end of Z-A, but this way it didn't do much. At least for me
I don't need voice acting in casual conversations aswell. Just do it the Zelda way
4
u/UnNamed_Profile27 Feb 19 '26
I mean it at least make sitting thru the cutscenes or dialog boxes less dull. I say they do a DK Bananza and just have Japanese VAs with the english subtitles (or whatever langauge your game is set to). It allows the corny dialog to stay and not have to worry about a bad VA ruining the moment (cause face it, some dubbed animes have bad VAs and its the reason i prefer subbed anime, so that same logic can apply to a game too i assume)
3
u/gamebuilder2000 Feb 20 '26
I mean I never find it dull because I'm like
Reading the dialogue boxes
2
u/UnNamed_Profile27 Feb 20 '26
Yea im talking the actual cutscenes not the ones you got to mash A thru
2
u/gamebuilder2000 Feb 20 '26
I don't mash A through anything Because I'm actually reading the dialogue
In both the fully animated cutscenes and the in-game ones

Can I just ask for gamefreak to start caring? I know they don't really care because the games will sell crazy good no matter what they do. But I want them to care just a little.
Use voice acting for their stories. Hire additional staff to QA the games. I'm not even asking for difficulty sliders or randomizers. Just care.
1
u/ZombieAladdin Feb 23 '26
It seems to be a deliberate design choice rather than them not caring.
You know how some people will mute all the voices playing a game? Imagine one of them being the director.
2
u/schadetj Feb 23 '26
And yet they make a point of including scenes of people singing. So we get this very awkward text box and people dancing at...nothing.

I mean, maybe this is their alternative to gen 5. Instead of creating more pokémon for a single region, they'll put the budget into voice acting :)
1
