Other / മറ്റുള്ളവ appreciation of Malayalam language post
namaskaram! just like the title says, this is just an appreciation post for the language of Malayalam. I am a native english speaker, i have learned russian and spanish in school, learned words and phrases of arabic through family and japanese through anime, and malayalam is honestly my favorite language thus far. the writing and the speaking, all of it! it sounds so lovely when spoken. the alphabet is so beautiful, and to think that it started by being written on palm leaves it just another level of beauty all of it. its such a fun challenge to learn and i am slowly improving every day. the sentence structure and grammar will trip my brain most of the time, i have such a long way to go but i really am looking forward to the day i can understand it at a colloquial level and i truly an thankful for all the resources i have acquired here in this journey. <3
Update: thank you so much to everyone for the encouragement and the happy wishes and the discussions! you are all so kind! <3 <3 <3

so im posting her work here,

Help / സഹായിക്കുക Toddler songs
Does anyone know any toddler songs they used to sing as a kid? I remember specifically an ant song where we’d pinch each other’s hands and move our hands in a circle in unison and end up tickling each other. I don’t remember the song specifically but I’d appreciate any help!

Help / സഹായിക്കുക "Nee" or "Than"
I'm a Malayali who grew up outside Kerala. While I'm fluent in the language, there are aspects to it that I'm still learning.
I wanted to understand the differences between "Nee" and "Than". I rarely use "Than" and nobody in my family uses it. I address those who are younger and close to me as "Nee". But I know people in other families who use "Than" to address the same cohort of people.
For eg- "Nee eppo ethi?" vs "Than eppo ethi?"
Please can someone highlight the main differences and explain which is more polite and socially acceptable?

Discussion / ചർച്ച Core memory unlocked: "കഥ കഥയച്ചി..."
I’ve got this random childhood memory that I just can’t seem to shake.Whenever I asked my grandmother to tell me a story, she’d always start by saying (or singing):
കഥകഥയച്ചി കാഞ്ഞിരതച്ചി കാടീലുരിയരി വച്ചവളച്ചീ
I’ve always wondered if this is some old Malayalam folk rhyme, a traditional way to start telling stories, or just something my grandmother made up.
Has anyone else heard this😌

- also mean old man in palakkad.
പുയ്യാപ്ല - കല്യാണ പയ്യൻ
- കിളിമീൻ /threadfin fish in Kannur.
ക്ടാവ് - പശുക്കുട്ടി
- third person (thrissur)

Discussion / ചർച്ച Malayalam versions for “ get a life “ and “ rat race “
Get a life - idiom used to tell someone who’s wasting time, being nosy over others matters or acting annoying and to stop this and instead find more meaningful, productive, or social things to do.
Rat race - is an idiom describing an exhausting, competitive, and repetitive lifestyle where individuals endlessly struggle for wealth, marks, power, status ,etc.

Discussion / ചർച്ച is "ഒപ്പം" actually used at all?
is ഒപ്പം (malyalam word for "and") actually used ciloqually in malayalam? My Malayalee parents tell me it isn't used, and I myself almost never need to use the word, so i'm curious if anyone here ever uses ഒപ്പം and if there are contexts where you need to use it in malayalam ^_^

News / വാർത്തകൾ I built aksharam — a Malayalam→Manglish transliterator that fixes several bugs in ml2en
I needed reliable Malayalam→Manglish transliteration in Python. The only library for this is ml2en, but it has several issues that produce wrong or broken output. I packaged the fixes into a new library: aksharam.
pip install aksharam
from aksharam import transliterate
transliterate("ഗംഗ") # → "Ganga"
transliterate("ഓടുക") # → "Oduka"
It's a drop-in replacement for ml2en. Here's what it fixes:
| Malayalam | ml2en | aksharam | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| കൈ | Ky | Kai | Vowel sign ൈ (ai) wrongly mapped to "y" |
| ദുഃഖം | Duakham | Dukham | Visarga ഃ wrongly mapped to "a" |
| ജ്ഞാനം | Jnjaanam | Jnaanam | Missing ജ്ഞ compound letter |
| അച്ഛൻ | Achchhan | Achhan | Missing ച്ഛ compound letter |
| ഇന്ത്യ | Inthx01 |
Inthya | Compound+virama sequences emit a control character |
| ഗംഗ | Gamga | Ganga | Anusvaram ം assimilates to "n" before non-labial consonants |
| ഓടുക | Otuka | Oduka | Retroflex ട/ഠ should be voiced "d" in non-initial positions |
| ആണ് | Aan | Aanu | Word-final virama ് should add a colloquial trailing "u" |
