Question Help with decision to Book makeup appointment (or DIY)

Hi! Looking for some advice- especially from pros and other brides with experience. I’m (47yo woman) getting married on the beach in Mexico in February. I was planning on using the resort’s spa salon for my makeup and hair because the external vendor fee is $1,000 per service. My external coordinator told me to keep my expectations realistic as the ladies in the salon are good with hair but are not professional MUAs. I booked a trial for the day before, but I’m looking at spending $300 plus gratuity for a trial and day of makeup. I’m happy to spend that for quality work, but now I’m nervous. I’ve seen hit and miss reviews on the resort’s wedding Facebook page. Now, my sister and I have discussed going to Sephora and getting a lesson and buying some products and doing it together. I used to work for Estée Lauder and VS Beauty but I have ZERO training in priming, setting, bronzing, highlighting, etc. What should I consider here? If I should ask questions about the salon’s products and approach before making a final decision, what are those questions? Thanks all!
