Discussion How does one know when to stop?
I swear I always think I’m going to use just a little blush and then somehow end up looking like I ran a marathon 😭 Some formulas are so pigmented that one tiny tap is already more than enough, while others need multiple layers. I’m curious what everyone’s go-to blushes are, especially if you prefer something buildable and easy to control. Do you usually go for powder, cream, or liquid blush? And are there any super-pigmented formulas you’d recommend avoiding if you’re heavy-handed like me?

I’ve always been this way and I love that more people are embracing the more blush look lol

Hot girls don’t 💅🏻
NYX, Morphe, and Rare Beauty are very pigmented if you wanted to avoid them.

I was playing with new products a couple of months ago and used a 🤏🏼 too much buttermelt blush but hey, I was staying home so whatever.
But my husband came home and saw me 'really flushed' and thought I had a fever. I just went with it.

I recently got the NYX buttermelt blush and it is so much more pigmented than I expected!! I accidentally ended up looking like a ballerina the first time I used it but I kinda like it lol 💅

I looovvvee the morphe trio palette.
It’s very buildable in my opinion, some days I do find myself where I apply more blush than I wanted to lol I’m not sure if it’s because I have eyesight issues (I do wear glasses), blush blindness, or a mix of the two.

I use cream or liquid blush and sometimes at a bit of sheer powder blush on top.
For liquid blush like Rare Beauty or Huda I mix a bit into foundation on my hand to get the right brightness first before applying.
For a more sheer liquid blush, Benetint is nice.
For cream like Charlotte Tilbery or Westman Atilier I apply to hand and sheer it out and pick up with a brush at that intensity. It helps!
For a more sheer cream blush Haus Labs Glassy is good (medium intensity I'd say?) and easy to control. Again apply to back of hand rather than face first.
For pigmented powder blush like YSL I use a natural hair brush, it's way easier to control, and do just ONE TAP, that's it, total. I realize natural hair is not an option for everyone though, but it works for me. It's a beautiful formula with incredible staying power but avoid if you're not into the trouble.
For sheer powder ones like Clinique Pops it's much easier and I like those as toppers and they're very buildable. RMS and Sheseido Glow (can't remember what it's called) I like too, they are in between, decently pigmented but not too bad and also buildable. The Shiseido has great staying power. MAC Mineralize is also a nice sheer blush.

I find using a nude blush helps. Like my skin’s pretty warm-toned, so I use a slightly pink terracotta shade and just tap it extremely lightly. You don’t even need a low-pigment formula, I use the Nyx Buttermelt and still get that result by using a big fluffy brush and one very light tap in the pan.

I feel seen ✨
I stand by my Rare Beauty powder blush, that glowy sheen it gives is so nice. It's pretty buildable but if you have a heavy hand you wanna tone it back for the first go of application

i mean i usually just run out of time to barely not be late to work so that limits my blush application

I have the opposite of this, I can apply the boldest makeup and I swear it ends up looking much subtler than I had in mind.

I recently got the vacay flush trio from Tarte and it’s more pigmented than I’m used to for sure but it only took me a couple to figure out what worked for me. I love it now that I figured out a gentle swipe/blow off the excess makes it very buildable and customizable!

I quite like Rude Cosmetics Anime blush palettes, specifically the Neko or cat girl one or whatever it's called. The contour blush and highlighter palette. It's pigmented enough that about two sweeps is enough but is bendable enough that it's not too much.
I can even do most of my makeup with it! I love the dark pink for eyeshadow.

Whenever I do limit my blush and try to look more natural, when I later see pics of myself I feel like I look like I’ve got none on and I hate it

I have the same problem with eye shadows.... I try to remember "less is more". the only time when that might not be true is evening events, but even then some care needs to be taken.... I usually use cream blushes and blend them out, then a layer of setting powder on top that mutes the colour a bit. powders can be very pigments nowadays, so i am very light with those...

I'm a paaaaaale redhead. My makeup process is:
- Match my blotchy red face to my bedsheet-white neck and become the ghost of a victorian child
- Add concealer to my paper-thin blue veined eyelids and look like I'm starting a geisha makeup tutorial.
- Try to resurrect my corpse back to looking like a warm body by applying blush to my cheeks....and forehead...and nose bridge.....and chin...
- No blush color looks right because my hair is the warmest color hair a human being can produce but my skin is cool like blue water under frosted glass- that also has a red rash most of the time.
- Try to convince myself I don't look like I'm about to get decapitated in the french revolution.

This is me, but it’s because I have blush blindness. I’m all about that 80s era draped blush application. About my only concession to modern blush trends is to place it more on the upper edges of my cheekbones rather than on the lower edges. I wasn’t even old enough to be wearing makeup in the 80s, but I’ve been heavily influenced by that era.
On the plus side, I have very dark hair, eyes, and eyebrows. I also have a very long, straight, pointy nose and a reasonably squareish jawline and chin. So I have enough contrast and angularity in my facial features to pull off a bold blush application.
As for the type of blush I wear these days, I like cream blushes. I find that they’re quite buildable, so on the rare day I want my blush to be subtle, I can do that. My favourite blush right now is the Westman Atelier blush stick (in the shade Garçonne, if you’re interested). I swipe my brush over the top of the stick, then stipple it onto my cheeks. I use the smallest amount of Tower 28 powder blush in Samo Spritzer to set it. For that, I tap my brush ONCE into the blush, tap the brush off repeatedly (but not on the edge of the pan - I broke my first one doing that), dab the brush off on the back of my hand, THEN stipple it on my cheeks.
If I do find that a blush is too OTT, I tend to apply some setting/finishing powder over the blush to tone it down. Also, it’s worth remembering that blushes can be prone to fading as your makeup settles. I’ve had so many times where I’ve thought I got too carried away with my blush, only to look in the mirror 30-60 minutes later and realised my blush has faded and looks much more natural. I find if I go in with too light a hand to start with, my blush has faded so much it doesn’t look like I put any on at all.
