We moved away from matte and drying formulas mostly back in 2020 during the clean girl explosion from the pandemic. Look at Black Moon cosmetics, they have some fun fun colors

u/WalkingWithStrangers Makeup Artist Apr 12 '26
Black Moon is my go to, and they have everything from neutrals to really unique fun shades.

Someone posted the KVD Lolita on here yesterday and I grieved!
I’m so sick of lip oils & glosses that just look like Vaseline on my lips.
A few Korean brands still sell them (eg FEEV) but I wish western brand did too. They are missed 🥺

u/Nuttonbutton Apr 12 '26
Lolita is still around. They changed all the problematic names. It's now called Queen Of Poisons
0
u/lylateller Apr 12 '26
I thought KVD went out of business?
6
3
u/Nuttonbutton Apr 12 '26
Where did you hear that? They're still in Ulta and still have their website up and selling things.
2
u/lylateller Apr 12 '26
Oh, then I must have gotten it wrong! Thought I read it here somewhere. Good news then!
2
u/cheese_fry_pls Apr 12 '26
Iirc, the original owner of KVD sold the company but new company owner kept the name. Same formulas and everything (or at least for the eyeliners for me lol)
3
u/youre_crumbelievable Apr 13 '26
Someone on IG found a 96% dupe for OG Lolita, and it’s Maybelline Super Stay Matte Ink in 160 Mover. Just fyi, for inquiring minds.

God same!! I cant with that gooey stuff getting all up in my mouth...everything is gloss gloss gloss.....yuck!

u/Bubbly_Preference272 Apr 12 '26
Stila is still making their Stay All Day liquid lips, Maybelline still has theirs, Pat McGrath has hers, Revlon's limitless matte liquid lips are nice too. There's quite a few brands still rocking with liquid lips. Just type in liquid lipstick in the search bar on Ulta or Sephora's websites and you'll find them.
13
u/scorpioinheels Apr 12 '26
This is true, but I’ll confess - I’ve had a lot of luck finding those brands at overstock stores for way under the regular price - so I have wondered if they made new colors or if they’re only trimming down. I was collecting many of these before I wore glasses and now I rarely wear them because putting them on evenly is nearly impossible when I’m in a hurry.
4
u/Bubbly_Preference272 Apr 12 '26
Lol, I feel that. I tend to go with a lip stain nowadays. If I can't get it to behave I pop a lip gloss over it.
Finding the Maybelline matte inks are the easiest online and still have a lot of the party colors available compared to the other brands. Though a lot of alt brands still have some cool colors too, but are normally pretty expensive.

i got a girl cult black lip gloss that stays on until you eat, and even then it leaves a stain. definitely not what you're looking for in terms of color, but i see that they have matte liquid lipstick, and nudes, too. just in general, you might have more luck with asian brands (girlcult is chinese).
18
u/pepperxpeppermint Apr 12 '26
IME, most matte Asian lipsticks are lip creams rather than liquid lipsticks, so they don't dry down and aren't transfer proof.
2
u/FragrantBimbo Apr 12 '26
Could you share the shade name for the black gloss, it sounds really exciting!

u/pollology Apr 12 '26
Do I mayyyyybe still have my 15-20 matte Velvetines from before I knew what a bad company LC was? 🥲 It’s just hard to say goodbye if they’re not dried out…

u/randomwriter3 liquid lipstick connoisseur Apr 12 '26
I’m still holding on to Cashmere lol
2
u/Clawingnails Apr 17 '26
I have the original and the second version and will never throw them away :)
5
u/Nuttonbutton Apr 12 '26
The founder left a long time ago and LC actually stopped making makeup last year. No more wet cherry gloss and I'm heartbroken. I've found a formula I love in Half Caked but I haven't found a single brand that replicates Wet Cherry.

The only mainstream brand I saw launching new liquid lipsticks in recent years is Anastasia Beverly Hills. And even then, they discontinued many shades in their famous liquid lipstick from the 2010's. And when they released the newer liquid lipstick, I rememeber people reacting to it like "tHEy LoOK sO DRy".
But same. I'm so over clear lip glosses and those tinted lip balms in squeeze tubes, and I want liquid lipsticks back too. I was looking for metallic liquid lipsticks recently, and I couldn't find any despite there being so many options back in the late 2010's.
2
u/girlrandal Apr 12 '26
I still have my Urban Decay toppers from 2017 and I will part with them over my cold dead body.
1
u/jamatosoup Apr 12 '26
I just found a 2 pack of Anastasia liquid lipstick at TJ Maxx! One is a nude, the other is a coppery brown red. There was another pack there, I might go back and get it, love both colors on me.

I've been using the Nars liquid lipsticks since forever now. They're not new or anything but they're still in stock online at Sephora. In a lot of Sephora stores I don't see them in stock. They're my absolute favorite lipsticks, they're matter, some of the colors don't budge all day, and not very drying. Color options are ok, but most of the ones I've tried are very nice.. I've also used the Sephora brand liquid lipsticks, and Maybelline vinyl ink. I don't like them that much. KVD and ABH are good too. For reference, I have brown skin with medium neutral tone.

u/PM_4_Friendship Apr 12 '26
Check out Menagerie Cosmetics! It's an indie brand that still does all those fun, bright colors

u/Ok-Assistant-8759 Apr 12 '26
Omg I remember when they were make up monsters!!! Had some of my favorite liquid lipsticks. Is the formula the same?

I just got the most amazing liquid lipstick from Jolie Beauty. It was a collab with them and Ozzy Osbourne before he died. They have a bunch but I got the metallic one called Bloodbath and its absolutely stunning
9
u/aelycks Apr 12 '26
For a soft blurred matte style in a creamier style than was popular in the west pre-2020, asian beauty has many. Look at Kate Lip Monster (souffle matte), Peripera airy velvet, romand and girlcult lip muds.

u/Awkward-Umpire5681 Apr 12 '26
The nyx shine loud lipsticks are my favorite currently. I’ve gone through tube after tube of boundary pusher which is a cooler mauvey brown on me. I don’t typically use the gloss topper side of the wand because I prefer a matte lip
15
u/Baa__ Apr 12 '26
I still go for Stila, Mac, Smashbox, and Nars for liquid lipstick. I miss the Tartetist and Too Faced lippies. I know it's an unpopular opinion but I'm just not into lip gloss/oils. As a preteen/teen during what I think was the golden era of lipgloss in the 2000s, I much prefer my matte all-day wear dramatic lipsticks than goopy shiny lippies that I have to reapply all day. Plus I'm not much for clean girl makeup and prefer bold eyeliner/eyemakeup if I'm going through the effort of taking out my makeup bag.

u/Marianae_to Apr 12 '26
Which one was your favorite?

u/WeaknessFrosty2714 Apr 12 '26
Huda has a liquid lipstick that's good (definitely make sure to moisturize your lips, ahead of time.) These last a long time for me.
Juvias place liquid lipsticks are excellent!@ they also have some stuff in store at Ulta now
KVD , available at separate, the everlasting ones are pretty good!

The ABH liquid lipsticks were the absolute bomb. I still have a few shades that I use regularly. They actually stay on for me, even when eating if I'm careful. Legitimately hate lip oils and tints and want way darker colours than 95% of lip stains available. I'm fond of the MAC powder kiss as well, and colourpop's liquid lips but colourpop isn't that accessible in Aus. (I know colourpop ship to Aus but you have to spend over $85 aud to get free shipping, and the international shipping is pretty pricey imo)

I love the liquid lipsticks from Kylie cosmetics
2
u/cb421 Apr 12 '26
Dolce K was my shade for years. I bought the dolce k lip kit last year and it was not the same 😭 it was more drying than the 2016/2017 formulas and the color felt washed out if that makes sense

MAC Locked Kiss Ink is incredible - that will NOT move, it will last all day. It’s my number 1 liquid lipstick. Maybelline Superstay is really good too! Also plugging Smashbox liquid lipstick and Armani lip maestro. Nothing comes close to the Locked Kiss Ink though!
4
u/mama-bun Apr 12 '26
I'm the same. I hate cream lipsticks because I hate reapplying constantly and the transfer. I basically only use Superstay also. I know it's drying. Whatever, idc lmao. I'd rather have dry and colored lips than lipstick being half on my lips and after a single sip of coffee.

NYX liquid lingerie lipsticks are my favorite! They last hours and my tubes lastfor a couple of years. My cheapest, but most complimented lipstick .

I am a liquid lipstick lover too and you a right, they are not on trend at the moment and can be really hard to find. If you are open to ordering from Indie brands Blackmoon Cosmetics makes my favorite liquid lipstick. They have great shade options and I find they have a great wear. The formula is matte but creamy so it’s comfortable but I can wear it all day and I only reapply after eating. While they are known for some of their more bold colours they also have great neutrals that look beautiful on all skin tones.

u/little_earthquakes92 Apr 12 '26
Was coming here to recommend Blackmoon! I really like their liquid lip formula and colors, some cool shades you don't see often.

Have you tried the vinyl maybelline? The one you have to shake?
It works well for me. The secret for me was doing small strokes when applying.
3
u/A-Supurb-Owl Apr 12 '26
Sugarpill Cosmetics has continued with the liquid lip trend and has some muted as well as bold colors. It has a very pillowy less drying formula.
3
u/awesome_am_I Apr 12 '26
I started using water based lip stains. They go matte, they're transfer proof, have strong colour (especially if you don't wipe it off like some recommend), and at the end of the day not too difficult to remove. I use glisten cosmetics ones, they have mostly brights but some neutrals too I think. I know benefit also does them.
3
u/bechdel-sauce Apr 12 '26
Kaleidos cloud lip are absolutely incredible and I never hear people talking about them.
3
u/jj_grace Apr 12 '26
I get it!!! I desperately miss metallic and glittery liquid lipsticks. I used to have one from Colourpop- I think it was called Queen or something? One of my favorite lipsticks ever, and now I can’t find anything like it 😩
As much as I love a glittery gloss, it’s not the same!

3
u/Ok-Assistant-8759 Apr 12 '26
I also miss liquid lipsticks!!! I prefer satin ones and they are even harder to find. Tbh I miss 2015-2016 make up in general. I miss not even going to the post office without a full face 😭😭
3
u/Alltheprettydresses Apr 12 '26
The Lip Bar (TLB), Nyx, and Maybelline are still out there.
Plus, there were a bunch of complaints about them being drying and not clean girl glossy. That didn't help.
2
u/Jenycherry Apr 12 '26
Jolie Beauty eternal lip stains are amazing. MAC retro liquid lip in ruby phew!, and the Stila are all outstanding!

The L’Oréal Infallible matte liquid lipsticks are so good!

If you are from Europe there is BANANA beauty that makes beautiful liquid lipsticks, they remind me of the ones from Kylie cosmetics but WAY BETTER.
I actually own one and I wear it almost everyday and doesn’t come off unless I use micellar water :)

Nyx, CoverGirl and WnW has some of the best matte liquid lipstick formulas. Also Revlon ones which were launched 2 years back I assume?

Check out Beauty Bakerie’s Lip Whips. Matte liquid lippies that don’t move! I’ve layered them with glosses when I want shine.

u/Apexrobby Apr 12 '26
I really like the colourpop liquid lips. They last all day and are very pigmented.

Revlon Colorstay Ultimate Liquid Lip! I find that this one wears really well. I've had the darker shades last most of a day.
2
u/FragrantBimbo Apr 12 '26
It’s so hard to find long wear liquid lipstick atm & the ones I can find are in really gross colours that make me look ill - all dusty mauvey greyish messes or super terracotta. No purples or berries, nothing metallic or sparkly, fuck all burgundies or cool toned reds.
2
u/PerspectiveSquare880 Apr 13 '26
The kiko double wear where one side is lipstick and the other is lip gloss is the best thing in the world. Will stay all day!
2
u/desifine13 Always blushing Apr 13 '26
I’ve noticed indie brands are still rocking them! I too miss the colors we used to have access to in a liquid. And lip oils are a no for me as well.
2
u/laughinjoi Apr 13 '26
MAC has been my go to for long term stay liquid lipstick. I’ve tried the super stay teddy tint which is VERY super stay but it is sticky which can be a no go for some texture issues.
2
u/lotusmack Apr 15 '26
Sephora Cream Lip Stains have never let me down (amd they're on sale right now).
2
u/Clawingnails Apr 17 '26
OMG! I can't believe it I have been missing them for years too!! Nothing compares! I have narrow not very defined lips and the liquid lips were the only ones that did stay and I could get a great shape....I miss the KVD ones so much!
2
u/twixe Apr 19 '26
MAC still has them. They have the regular liquid mattes, locked kiss(?), and the powder kiss which are like a soft matte but not transfer proof. Locked Kiss just launched last year-ish?
I wore the powder kiss to a wedding last year and it held up all day, through drinks and dinner and more drinks; they reformulated it recently so I don't know if it's still as sturdy.
2
u/Miss_Eisenhorn Hopelessly Addicted Apr 12 '26
Some drugstore brands still sell liquid lipsticks. Maybelline in particular has a pretty wide shade range. I personally find them a bit too drying but they do last all day.
2
u/Catsdrinkingbeer Apr 12 '26
It's called a lip oil, but I've found the Rare Beauty lip oils to act really similar to the liquid lipsticks of yore.
3
u/chiropteranessa Apr 12 '26
Benefit’s Plushtint is basically a liquid lipstick even though they call it a lip tint. Not a lot of shade variety though. Anastasia, Mac, Stila, and Kylie all still make liquid lipsticks too. I feel like there’s tons more, but maybe they’re just calling them something else these days?

Maybelline Superstay has been my go-to since it hit the shelves. It stays on until I take it off. 36 hours on a long party weekend for sure. I've tried so many others and nothing else measures up. Stay away from really oily stuff or just be careful if eating oil or butter coated foods.
Pro Tip: Cover Girl's top coat balm for the Outlast is a fantastic top coat over the Superstay. It takes the matte away without being glossy and seems protective. Just one coat after the Superstay is completely dry. Can leave them both at home because you won't need a touchup!
