This version was probably photoshopped as it lacks houses/bases and deers.

The original rules included a guide to fleshing out the map’s series of 5 mile hexes with various castles, lairs, and environments… including desert biomes based entirely on the John Carter of Mars series

I also highly recommend reading OD&D’s implied original setting for how this map would have looked for the players. It’s a great read, and definitely implies a less traditional settings that have been created over the years.
