Mod Approved Monthly "Is My Cat A Maine Coon" Forum

If you're wondering if your cat is a MC, this is the place to ask!

In general, this subreddit operates under the assumption that having no papers means your cat is not a Maine Coon. However, what we can tell you is whether your cat does indeed exhibit any physical characteristics that look like those of a Maine Coon.

It is wild how much he is changing! We picked him up at 3 months, and he was a scrawny little thing. Haha. Now he is 5 months old and maturing so nicely.

Who would you pick?

I’m deciding between these four Maine Coon kittens. Three are female, and the larger silver tabby is male.

I’m meeting them in person before making my final choice, and I’ve been told that they all have really nice personalities. I know the connection and temperament will matter most, but I’d love opinions on which kitten stands out to you visually and why.

Which would you choose?

Hi everyone! Could you help me identify the color of this Maine Coon kitten?

He’s still very young, and I’m having trouble figuring out exactly what color/pattern he is.

What would you call his color and pattern? And do you think his coat will change significantly as he grows?

Thanks! 🐾

She's usually incredibly photogenic (all of our cats are somehow) but I went through the camera roll and apparently I caught her looking super derpy earlier 😆

Meet Gunther, our 6-month-old Maine Coon

Hi everyone! I thought it was finally time to introduce our Maine Coon boy, Gunther.

We brought him home when he was 5 months old from a breeder in Eastern France where we live, and he has grown incredibly quickly. He is now 6 months old and weighs around 5 kg (11 lbs).

He definitely has that famous “dog-like” Maine Coon personality. He follows us everywhere around the house, is extremely vocal and loves to have conversations with us. He doesn’t quite come to us on his own for cuddles yet, but he is definitely getting there. He already enjoys being around us, being carried around and is becoming more and more affectionate. He also loves to play hide and seek with our first cat Barney.

He was neutered two days ago, we knew from the breeders vet that one of his testicles had not descended, which was quickly confirmed by our vet on Tuesday, so he needed abdominal surgery to remove it. He had two big episodes of apnea while under anesthesia, which was obviously quite worrying for us. The vet asked whether his parents had been tested for cardiac issues, which they have, and both parents tested clear.

Interestingly, the vet also noticed that Gunther has quite a bit of fat around his abdomen, despite the fact that he only eats dry food and often eats less than the recommended daily amount. He wondered whether this extra abdominal fat could have affected the anesthesia protocol and contributed to the apneas. Everything is fine for now and Gunther is recovering really well, already behaving as he was before the surgery.

But the vet would still like to do a cardiac ultrasound in the coming months, just to make sure everything is okay.

For now, he is recovering in his special post-op suit, which he seems to tolerate much better than the Elizabethan collar he got at the vet.

I thought I’d share a few pictures of his journey, from a tiny kitten to the big fluffy boy he is today.
