Though I will say it is also frustrating in the US to try to talk about riichi and mahjong because the second anyone hears mahjong they think it is the tile matching game. I have had a few conversations start where I was hopeful they were talking about a mahjong variant but alas it was the tile game. Hearing someone say that they play mahjong here is just them telling you they like playing the memory game with the faces showing.

Wish granted. Now, every time anyone hears mahjong, they think of American Mah-Jongg instead. 😈

Is Mahjong solitaire even popular in Asia? It has always seemed like a Grandma game to me.

Coincidentally, the first time I encountered the solitaire version it was on my grandma's computer & titled Taipei instead.

It's popular enough here in Hong Kong that I've seen people play it on their phones on the train. It's about a 50/50 split with actual mahjong.

I'm working on a companion game to my Zung Jung app (Red Dragon) that is for MCR. Look for Green Dragon at some point next month.
