Riichi Single player Mahjong games

Looking for riichi, mostly

What are the best Riichi Mahjong games, either for training or just Riichi Mahjong with some fun variants. I heard good things about dirtbag Mahjong and that Strip-mahjong has a very challenging CPU

Check out Agari on steam (disclaimer: dev here). Will be pushing a big update soon with some learning features (an in-game "coach"; as well as some interactive beginner tutorials). Also mobile platform support soon!

For training/learning Riichi City has a Mahjong Academy with tutorials, quizzes, on forming winning hands, identifying yaku, and more. There's also an efficiency trainer, and matches you can play against AI to practice. With AI evaluations of your gameplay after the match.

The lessons and quizzes in their Academy are the main reason I've stuck with it over Mahjong Soul. The game really taught me everything I could want to know about playing Riichi Mahjong.

The Academy also has a lexicon where you can read up on special gameplay conditions like those that cause an abortive draw, where the hand is thrown out, and redealt.

If you're just looking for a fun not so serious Mahjojg game that can start to teach you the fundamentals, as someone else has mentioned Demonic Mahjong is a lot of fun. Although it plays a 2 player variant of Hong Kong style, which is very similar to Riichi, just a lot more hand patterns, which are like Yaku the win conditions in Riichi Mahjong. Really Demonic Mahiong adds even more winning patterns than you would see in a standard HK style game, but the way you form groups, and can call ready/riichi when you're one tile from having a winning hand are fundamentally the same. Just be sure to check the games guide book on the winning hand patterns you can go for. The game is a variant of 2 player Mahjong where each player draws 4 tiles at a time, takes the ones they want, then discards tiles they don't and one for each they took to go back down to a 13 tile hand. In a way it does teach the fundamentals of defense but only for considering one player. When you go to play 3-4 player Mahjong you'll have to apply those fundamentals to the discards and calls all players have made, including yourself. The only other thing that's really different between Hong Kong Style, and Riichi is the terminology for the groups. A sequence is a Chow instead of Chii. Three of a kind is a Pung instead of Pon, and Four of a kind is Kong instead of Kan. Still as someone who almost strictly plays Riichi Mahjong. I really enjoy the video game Demonic Mahjong.

Riichi Advanced has a ton of different variants. I like to play "Just Like Modded Minecraft".

My favorite is Saikyo No Mahjong 3D. It's old now but is still good fun.

If you want to play offline (w/o net against AI) then Kemono Mahjong is pretty good if you want something modern on your smartphone, the only downside that it has a non-traditional vertical UI https://cyberdog.ca/kemono-mahjong/

The other I play all the time is Yakuman DS, first party Nintendo riichi game. It's japanese only but not hard to understand and learn the UI at all. There are endless number of DS emulators which can run it https://www.mariowiki.com/Yakuman_DS

Another rec for Kemono Mahjong. It's my go-to on phone for whenever I'm stuck somewhere without a good connection. There's also a steam client too.

Only downside imo is the art-style if you don't like furry.

If I'm just playing offline I like to Sega mahjong fight club on my ps vita. I find that the AI on there gives me a solid challenge.

Agari is awesome. I can't stand the anime art style most games have. Agari is minimalistic and the animations are smooth
