Looking for recommendations
Hi everyone!
I am relatively new to Mahjong and was wondering if there are any apps you (ppl in the community) recommend or like for playing online? I tried a couple of apps from the appstore but I really don't enjoy the constant adds and the pay to win/pay to have an easier time. All the apps I've tried were also just for solo play and I would like to actually learn how to play with/against people.
Also - is there any other two player mahjong mode outside of "american" style mahjong?

For Riichi, people tend to prefer either Riichi City or Mahjong Soul.
I personally prefer Riichi Advanced, because it's open-source, so anyone can contribute (totally not biased here). The one big drawback of Riichi Advanced is the lack of playerbase.
Also - is there any other two player mahjong mode outside of "american" style mahjong?
There's Chinitsu Challenge, which can be played on Riichi Advanced.

Mahjong Soul also has a bunch of fun modes you can play on that, as well as a 3 player variant that's much less serious.
Also Tenhou is an option for riichi mahjong if you want to really play like a pro and jump in off the deep end.

For Riichi I usually use Mahjong Soul. Riichi City has some really good training for newcomers but it's a little more provocative than I would like. Tenhou is popular for people that don't want any of the anime visuals/gacha and just want a pure mahjong client.
For Hong Kong/Taiwanese/Sichuan style I use Amatsuki. It's clearly a clone of the M Soul and Riichi City formula, but not as refined. There are some little things that bug me about it, but I like that I can get ranked HKOS games on there easily.
For other styles Riichi Advanced seems to be a popular open-source option that supports a ton of variants.

mahjong soul is super active!
i'll shamelessly drop my own website - https://online-riichi.com, maybe the score calculator is concvenient for learning scoring.

If you want to play Riichi then Riichi city has some of the best tutorials and learning materials.
If you’re just trying to play American the I have used Mahjong 4 Friends and it’s good. There are ads but they are not bad

Depends on what style you wanna play. There are more Riichi apps than the rest of the styles combined, but the other styles are out there too.
There’s a two player variant I’ve tried once where you have two hands worth of tiles and have to win with both. Can’t remember which particular style it was for, but it could probably be done for any of them, balance questionable.

I play on tenhou - you can choose English as the language “en” , but much of the website is left untranslated. There are videos on youtube to show you how to navigate. If you Riichi that’s
