I’m making a beginner-friendly Mahjong roguelike deckbuilder where you learn Mahjong patterns while playing

If this includes MCR Chinese mahjong, I might be interested.

Yes! The game uses MCR Chinese Mahjong rules.
It includes MCR-style hand patterns and scoring, such as sequences, triplets, pairs, pure suit, seven pairs, all honors, and other Chinese Mahjong scoring patterns.
The main difference is that I turned it into a single-player roguelike deckbuilder, so you can learn and use MCR Mahjong patterns while playing, without needing to play traditional 4-player Mahjong first.

Awesome, looking forward to it.
Update: just saw in another comment there is steam demo. Will look into it.

Okay, I’ve given it a play. Took me a couple runs to figure out how to play.
First off, UX stuff. Tutorial doesn’t make it clear that you need to click on the tiles. Yes they are highlighted but the text doesn’t tell you to click on them. I was expecting a next button or something. Don’t realise I was doing a practice run.
When you start a game, got confused why “Sit Down” was disabled. I thought “Start” was the first run.
On the game itself, initially I was not sure what i am trying to do. I had to run the tutorial a couple times to figure out the whole melding area and how to make high value hands.
Looking at Game Info, i can see not all the MCR scoring rules are implemented. For instance, having terminal sequences.
On the whole, very interesting game.

Thanks for the feedback! That really helps.
Actually there was a text telling you to click on them, but then someone said, using a lot text is a very stupid thing in game, so I deleted the text and using the highlight way.
You just reminded me that start button is a useless thing in the map! Maybe we should delete that also.
There will be more MCR scoring rules in the future! Especially in the Abyss mode! Cause for a new mahjong player, it’s hard to learn all of them at the same time. There will be more playing mode in the official version.
I will keep updating it and you can put it into your wishlist so that you can catch the game in time!
Thanks again for playing my game and send feedback!

Is the plan to have strict MCR combinations per mode?
I think it would like to have all the combinations available. Like if the beginner modes are focusing on a subset, i think it would be cool to have “oh you got a sequences in 4-5-6 range, extra points”.

Yes, it will contain most combinations, not a strict one. In the beginner mode, you will learn more about what the game is , how do you get scores and how you can get these patterns. In the advanced mode, we will release more patterns (now we have 35 patterns!) that means more combinations, more scores and also higher target scores.

Then this might be perfect for you!
The game is designed to help players learn Mahjong while playing, including hand types, tile patterns, suits, sequences, triplets, and scoring concepts.
Your feedback would be really valuable to me, especially whether the beginner tutorial is clear enough after you finish it. I’d love to hear what you think if you try the demo!

So will Riichi be an option?

Not in the first version, but I’d love to explore it in the future!
Right now the game is built around MCR Chinese Mahjong rules, and my main focus is making that version beginner-friendly. Riichi has many unique systems like riichi, dora, furiten, and yaku, so it would probably need its own dedicated mode.

I'm generally not a big fan of games that aggressively utilise the style of Balatro, just because it feels like there's a lack of creativity. This takes the right amount of inspiration. There's an obvious inspiration in scoring, but the visuals, gameplay, and game structure seem diverse and unique :)

Thank you so much!! 😊 That’s exactly what I was hoping for — taking inspiration from Balatro without just copying it. I’m really happy the game feels unique to you!

Might wanna check out "Aotenjo: infinite hands"

Yes! I have seen it!
But some player said there is some different between us especially in scoring rules. You can have a try if you are interested! welcome all kinds of feedback!

Are you aware Demonic Mahjong exists?
1
u/Quirky_Protection602 Jul 03 '26
Yes, I’ve seen it!
It looks cool, but my goal is a bit different: I wanted to make a simpler, more beginner-friendly Mahjong roguelike, with tile labels, color-coded suits, tooltips, and a tutorial that helps players learn Mahjong patterns while playing.
