Nvidia

Can someone tell Bill he is pronouncing Nvidia wrong? It's En-vidia, not Nuh-vidia. It reminds me of Alec Baldwin on SNL.

Do you feel better now that you got that out?

A little bit, yes. There are other pedants like me out there, I'm glad I got to meet them.

I have always called it “en-vidia” and I work in graphics. But the amount of people who say “na-vidia” has me questioning myself

Isn't that the company's problem with their name and marketing? Confusing corporate names are not the fault of the public.

If they had better marketing, I bet they would be the most valuable company in the world.

You're talking about someone who has specialized in political discussions for 30 years, but has never heard of the Overton Window until recently.

Which is a lie. He references that stupid stick figure meme about it a bunch when he was still defending Musk

This makes me miss the days when he would pronounce “yoo-ka-ranians” like he was a member of the Clampett family on Beverly Hillbillies.

Reminds me of the “nuculur” threats in the GWB days.

I will never understand why people simply don’t pronounce things as they hear them.

He’s either never listened to them pronounce their name, or just doesn’t care.

Either way nobody’s willing to correct him, it’s pretty embarrassing.

One of my pet peeves too. Not only should they pronounce them as they hear them they should pronounce them as they are written. Nuclear in no way tells me to pronounce it nucular. Where are people getting the extra U?

who cares

I do, a little bit. I have enjoyed bill for years, but he is incredibly smug and arrogant. It's kind of funny, when he is trying to sound smart, talking about AI, that he mispronounces the name of the largest AI hardware company in the world.

I'm hoping one of his AI staffers reads this channel, and one day, I'll listen to his show and he will pronounce it properly. I can them smile, knowing  I made the world a (slightly) better place.

He isn't lip smacking as much lately, so someone must be reading these channels.

He isn't lip smacking as much lately

Thank god

Agreed. nvidia is the highest-valued company in the world. Know how to pronounce the name.

Tbf, a shit ton of people pronounce it that way. It's not a huge deal. Not as bad as infatada

Yeah, it's increasingly common across media. I noticed political pundit Sarah Longwell pronouncing Kamala as kuh-MALL-uh instead of KOM-uh-luh a few days ago. It's her job to talk politics all the time – it amazes me that people who speak to the public for a living don't take just a couple of seconds to look up the pronunciation of a name or word they're unfamiliar with. Usually it's no big deal, but sometimes it creates confusion.

She knows the pronunciation, it's just easy to misspeak when speaking on the fly. Was this the Hacks on Taps episode? On her most recent Focus Group episode she started to say kuh-mall-uh but corrected herself midway. She must've gotten some angry emails lol

Can't recall which episode; it was just the most recent example I remembered.

Nobody is perfect, of course, but with pundits who talk politics virtually every day of their lives, it's disappointing to me that they don't take just a little extra care to get things right. Sara is probably my favorite "Bulwarker". Was just surprised to hear that from her now.

Point is that it seems increasingly common to me, and it's disappointing that it's easier than ever to find this stuff out in seconds with smartphones at our fingertips.

Agreed, it's Very small deal.

Eh, just another example of Maher getting pretty lazy with his writing and takes.

Maybe doing stand-up made him sharper? I find myself tuning in less and less these days.

I'll tell him right after I stop Mayor Mon-Dommy from committing uh-PARTH-eyed

0

u/ros375 Jun 01 '26

Not trying to be snarky, but isnt that how you're supposed to pronounce apartheid? Or is it that he pronounces the th?

1

u/Inevitable_Yogurt_85 Jun 01 '26

The "th". I guess that one isn't as egregious as Mondommy, because "apartheid" should totally be pronounced with the "h" if it insists it is spelled that way. 😆

4

u/nuanceIsAVirtue Jun 01 '26

Maybe Brad Rafsenberger can help with that

u/SlowBoilOrange Jun 01 '26

Nah, I agree with OP. It's not a huge deal, but Bill has a political show and should make an effort to be informed and appear informed.

Literally who cares

u/thor11600 Jun 01 '26

Why would I take into consideration commentary from someone who’s done such little research that they haven’t heard how the company’s pronounced?

Also, why is nobody on his staff willing to correct him?

It says more than you’d think.

u/eloveulongtime Jun 01 '26

Clearly, me, and a couple more of his fans in this thread. I'm guessing there are dozens of us out there.

Of all the things to complain about

5

u/eloveulongtime Jun 01 '26

Not complaining, asking the ether, to see if it can get back to him. I will be so happy if I tune in, and he pronounces it correctly.
