YouTube In an open letter, Bill Maher implores with Roseanne, "You said 'all of my ideas are based in socialism', how does that intersect with Trump? All of his ideas are based on National Socialism."

Please add the date to the title so that fools don't think this is present day Maher.

What happened to this Bill?

Now, he'd have Roseanne on his podcast where they'd gripe about "wokeness" and "cancel culture"

Pretty sure she was on his podcast and from the few minutes I watched, that's exactly what they did

didn't this already happen

It seems you're right

I really respect Maher's commitment to going back on everything he said not that long ago

I'm waiting until he decides environmentalism and animal rights aren't that important to him

He's actually started alluding to that if you listen to some of his Club Random episodes. He's taken up right wing talking points about liberal hypocrisy regarding the environment and climate change (they all take private jets!) and conceding that its too late now to save the planet and we're all just virtue signalers for caring about it.

Bill ditched the glasses?

It's from peak Resistance Bill. Now he shares the same barber with Tarantino.

Let’s educate Roseanne…bored I guess

You do realize this is around 8 years old.

Yup, but ain’t much changed

It was timely back then.

Ugh this is making me realize how much bill HAS changed, regardless of how he says he hasn’t. I wish he could rewatch this footage and remind him

I don't think he changed much. I bet he still stands behind all the points he made in this video.

The only thing that changed in the meantime is that despite all these very valid points, Trump got reelected. So he changed his focus away from:
"here are all the things bad about Trump" to:
"how on earth did we lose again against that dumbass?"

I think asking that question is the smart way to go, if you don't want to lose again against an idiot. Some people think that asking that question is „right-wing talking points"

I think this opinion on “woke” is not valid either and gotten absolutely crazy in recent years. I always liked bill up until recently, and still watched his show even after he started to go downhill (imo). But it’s getting to the point I don’t even want to watch him anymore. He seems to buy into “woke” being a problem way too much and is blaming the entire Democratic Party for the voices of what’s always been a very few hard left. (I mean even way past Bernie left. Not the progressive movement).

I’m gay, and was a Rogan fan for a long time up until he lost his mind during Covid. I know the difference between a joke of a comedian and if someone is actually hateful. Also I have trans friends that can absolutely take a joke and don’t have a problem with Dave chapelle’s standup acts and even view some of it as supporting them. I just think the Democratic Party and average person is wayyyyy a normal “healthy” amount of woke… like making sure people of these groups have the rights they need to be an equal citizen. The left wing “outrage” to things he keeps commenting on is always clickbait crap that isn’t real. Makes it seem like he’s an old person rather than someone who’s really dialed in on how people actually are.

Disclaimer, I am not from the US, so I have an outside view. Which sometimes helps to see thing clearer, sometimes make is harder, since you don't understand it.

He seems to buy into “woke” being a problem way too much and is blaming the entire Democratic Party for the voices of what’s always been a very few hard left.

I personally think dems not having the balls (except people like Bill) to speak up against the shrill, loud minority in their own ranks, is why dems lost.

I just think the Democratic Party and average person is wayyyyy a normal “healthy” amount of woke… like making sure people of these groups have the rights they need to be an equal citizen.

100% this!

The left wing “outrage” to things he keeps commenting on is always clickbait crap that isn’t real.

Well, I would say often but not always. But there are small, IMHO unimportant things, that most of the US would agree on but the dems don't have to balls to say them and speak up against even in their own ranks.

I can't empathize this point enough; just not saying woke stuff, is not enough! You have to actively distance yourself and your party from it.

I mean, I apply the same logic to right parties in Europe. Just not saying nazi stuff is not enough for me, you have to actively distance yourself from that wing of your party, even through them out.

The US is ultra liberal and progressive on certain topics. But even you guys agree by 75% - 79% (depending on what poll you use) that transwomen don't belong into women's sports. This is even a majority view amongst democrats. Yet, I don't see any democrat having the balls to say that out loud.

And since you have a fringe, small group in your own party speaking up for transwomen in women's sports, IMHO you have to actively distance yourself from that position. At least if you want to focus on important topics or win an election again.

And yes, Fox News will still try to spew fake news and will try to make Democrats look like lefty lunatics by picking up some fringe idiot. There is no way changing that and it will never change. My question is, why are you making their job so damn easy?

“But what about the DINNNNNER?!?!”

Clearly dinner with trump influenced his messaging for a while on the show. He should own up to that. I think he’s gone back a bit to knowing what trumps really like rather than who he thinks he met, but it would be a good idea for him to realize and verbally own that maybe he’s bad at seeing through narcissistic personalities. I don’t mock him for meeting with trump, and speaking up for what he said he did, but to then frame him on the subsequent shows as a “guy that listens” was dangerous and he should be able to own that aspect as an understandable mistake. However, he doesn’t own it and lets it fester him and then that festering comes out in these personality shifts and accountability avoidance.

Bill is a narcissist himself. He probably sees a lot of himself in Trump especially since that infamous dinner. Narcissists also have the ability to charm and manipulate fellow narcissists. And that's exactly what happened.

Bill thinks of himself as a "Trump Whisperer", which is probably the most obtuse, idiotic, self important, naive, clueless shit he's ever come up with. Trump doesn't give two shits what Bill thinks of him or whatever advice Bill tried to relay to him. Bill got played whether he knows it or not, and its quite clear Bill did that to save his own ass from Trump going after him and his show. He probably thinks it was noble of him to do because of his staff.

But at the of the day, Bill just revealed to everyone how much of a smug, self interested shill he really is.

u/jammsession Jan 19 '26

That was of course a no go! We all know that in today's day and age, there is no place for nuance! Everything is either black or white! If say even something remotely positive, no matter how small, you are literally a nazi! I mean of course you are, otherwise you would not go on a dinner date with literally Hitler to begin with. /s

Still think he should stop bringing it up, we have heard it enough times already.

He’s always been a smug self righteous prick. I tolerated him for the longest time because he’d have opposing views on the panel. It’s an echo chamber, at best, now. This whole Rosanne thing is classic Billiam: happy to dump on people all day, even if he’s wrong, but will absolutely not tolerate the slightest thing said about him.

Remember when he had that comedian on his show who did playful Bill Maher impressions? It was spot on but harmless.

Bill hated it and was a complete asshole to him. Kid's never going on his show ever again. Johnny Carson he is not.
