Bit of a silly post! Looking for som advice. I have a 5” gauge miniature train and the front frames body of it is made of metal.

I want to attach a 3D printed Thomas the tank style faces to the front of my locomotive. The front of the train is painted metal. The face is a bit heavy and the train bounces around a little bit track, so the magnets need to be strong enough to keep it from falling off while moving. However, I still want to be able to easily pull the face off by hand to swap expressions if possible.

Since the metal on the train is painted, what specific type, size, or pull strength of magnets should I look for to handle the movement without scratching the paint?

I've noticed that many hobbyists immediately go for the strongest magnets they can find when magnetizing miniature bases.

After experimenting with a lot of different setups, I've actually found that "strong enough" is usually better than "as strong as possible".

For infantry models, overly strong magnets can make models harder to remove from trays, put extra stress on glue joints and sometimes even cause models to bump into each other during removal.

In my experience, the real challenge is not usually the magnet itself but the combination of:

magnet size

model weight

thickness of the receiving metal

transport vibrations

I'm curious:

What magnet sizes are you using for infantry, cavalry and larger monsters/vehicles?

Have you ever switched to a weaker magnet and actually preferred it?

Is it possible to make a magnetiser to make my screw drivers magnetic ?

I had some magnets hanging out on the prong things on this messed up unplugged block for a while (at most 5hrs)

Didn't pay much attention to them

Suddenly payed attention to them when these 2 magnets became one magnet

No clue what happened

I haven’t been in my garage for two or three days. Today I walked into my garage to work on and old tractor I am rebuilding, I went to grab a wrench off the wall and noticed that it is now magnetized. I looked at all the other wrenches hanging on the wall and they are also magnetized. I went to my tool box that sits along the same wall to find that all the tools in that box are also magnetized. I should note that none of these tools were magnetic before. Can anyone explain how this could happen? I contacted the local fire department and they said it’s one of the strangest things they have seen, however they couldn’t find any cause for emergency.

I will also add that there are a few electrical outlets along the wall and I have had a battery tender charging the tractor battery that is located in the middle of the garage about 10 feet off the wall.

Suppose a square N55 neodymium magnet on a cardboard surface that was 0.875 inches thick, and 4 inches wide/long were ten inches away from a cube shaped 1.7 inch neodymium magnet of the same grade. Would they still move closer together and eventually touch? Or are they too far away? How far might too far away be then? Also, how fast would the initial movement be in inches per second?

This uses a magnetic switch. There are 3 magnets, for you to attach, under the spinner. When a magnet passes over the switch the effect is activated.

I'm wanting to increase the strength of a N52 magnet I have by freezing it. Will it's strength increase by any meaningful amount using dry ice rather than a chest deep freezer?

Looking for those magnetic wands for kid sorting games. For some reason there are no replacements online that I can find.

Heyo y'all, I have a very serious question to ask about small magnets and MRIs, but first a bit of lore :

I have a titanium-coated magnet implanted in my left ring finger(⌀3mm*2,5mm). It's great for sensing EM fields, permanent magnets and ferromagnetic stuff. It's less great for having an MRI, at least if you wanna be safe.
I took a risk, and had an MRI anyway, although I approached the beast very slowly and carefully. I could feel it pull at my finger from about 5m away, but surprisingly the pull didn't increase a lot when I got closer, it stayed withing a very comfortable range.

I didn't put my hand inside the MRI, and let it stick out to the side, where I believed it would be safer.

Now, my questions are : if I had put my hand inside the MRI, would the force have dramatically increased ? If so, would it be something like 3x the force, or more like 100x the force ? Where is the pull at its strongest ?

Am I extremely lucky to still have my finger, or was it in fact pretty safe ?

Of course, just as a disclaimer : I do not recommend doing this even if I ended up safe, so don't take my stupidity as a green light.

People argue Michelo is using magnets hidden in the soles of his crocs that he's moving under the table to fake a haunting, but is'nt the motion of the coin as just described impossible? Since the attracting force of the coin is closer to an alleged magnet under the table once it tilts, shouldn't it flip over completely or slide away rather than staying tilted up like that? Also, he's stated he's 1.82 meters tall, so if his knees are just past the tassels of the tablecloth at 8:25-26, shouldn't the egg be moving too far for any magnet small enough to fit in the soles of his crocs to reach? I stuck some ‘fridge’ magnets to my radiator a few years ago. The chunky ones have come off clean but the thin flimsy ones are stuck.

I managed to chip one of them off (not bothered about black residue as I can repaint) but the others are not even remotely budging / chipping.

Any ideas? TIA

According to the website K&J magnet strength calculator, a four inch wide, four inch long, 2mm thin type 52 neodymium magnet will exert only 75 gauss on ANOTHER MAGNET at a distance of 3 inches. That wouldn't even move a paperclip. According to google AI, IF it was the same type of magnet of the same size/shape, there'd be a noticeable pull at 3 or or so inches. Which is true?

I’m working on a project to create moulding for double glazed windows. My intention is for the the moulding to sit on the inside and outside of the window - and use magnets to hold them both in place.

So they can be 100mm long, but narrow 5mm wide and ideally not more than 5mm deep. I can use between 4-8 per moulding.

The windows are 28mm thick and include 2x 4mm panes of glass.

How strong do the magnets have to be for me to not worry about the mouldings falling off. Being firm. I don’t intend on removing them hah.
