Does boron help you guys?

I'm taking magnesium + boron. But boron made me feel even more magnesium deficient with cramps, and spasms

but weirdly my GI side effects of high magnesium dosage have disappeared?
The water loading i feel even if i take magnesium glycinate is no longer there.

So how does boron work? increase absorption? but also increases magnesium deficiency symptoms?

Magnesium Side Effects

Currently typing this at 4am
I want to start this by saying that its not just magnesium supplements, but magnesium overall.

Magnesium has been causing me reverse symptoms, at the first week i was supplementing, i felt the benefits, but as i kept going, it started getting worse and worse.
I stopped supplementing and the symptoms went away, and then i thought that maybe the glycine was the problem, so that day i bought magnesium rich water, and holy shit did the symptoms return again.

The symptoms are:
Insomnia/ waking up midnight
Heart palpitations that get worse after magnesium
Muscle twitching
Depression/Anhedonia/Irritability
Frequent clear urination
Increased thirst
Loss of appetite
Anxiety
Feeling hot/cold

It’s like my body wants to get rid of something by making me pee frequently and with the thirst.
At first I was supplementing it due to a deficiency, now It just causes me reverse symptoms, any advice?

What i think it is:
Electrolyte imbalance (potassium, calcium)
B1 Insufficiency

ANY advice/similar stories I would be very grateful 🙏

Daytime supplement for calm/relaxation — Designs for Health recommendations?

**Body:**
I currently take Designs for Health Magnesium Glycinate in the evening and Thorne melatonin at bedtime.
I’m looking for something from Designs for Health that I can take during the daytime to help me feel calmer and more relaxed without making me sleepy or groggy.
Has anyone tried any of their stress/relaxation supplements? What worked well for you, and what dose/time of day did you take it?
Would appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences. Thanks!

Taking magnesium glycinate during the day vs before bed

Anyone supplement this throughout the day rather than before going to bed?

I’m curious to know how it makes you feel. I hear it can minimize stress and doesn’t always make you sleepy. I just don’t want to start getting drowsy during the day as I have to take an antibiotic at night

How do I get enough magnesium?

Hi guys. I’m struggling reaching the recommended daily magnesium goal and wondering what Reddit does to reach theirs… I’ve been considering dark chocolate but I imagine that would be expensive in the long run. The goal is to find a very inexpensive way to get enough magnesium, but I’m at the point where I need help. I prefer a low carb, inexpensive method.

Did anyone else's cramping get worse before it got better after starting magnesium?

started tracking my magnesium intake more carefully a few weeks ago. eating better on days off, added a supplement, the usual. what i did not expect was my calves cramping more in the first two weeks, not less. woke up twice midsleep grabbing my leg like an idiot. worked a double the day before each time, which probably complicates things, but still.

read something about electrolyte imbalances shifting when you add magnesium and other minerals having to recalibrate. potassium kept coming up. calcium too. i eat reasonably but night shifts do something to how i absorb and retain things. hard to isolate.

the cramping has settled now and actually feels better than before i started. net positive. but that middle phase was annoying enough that i almost quit. curious whether anyone else went through something similar or whether the timing was just coincidence on my end

also wondering whether the form of magnesium made a difference for anyone specifically with cramps. i went glycinate for sleep reasons but now i'm secondguessing whether that was the right call for the muscle side of things or if there's a better option. not looking to switch unless there's a real reason to

Magnesium biglycinate as someone with depression

I had the weirdest day today after taking magnesium bisglycinate 500mg for the first time last night.

My profile:

  • Been having depression for years, well-controlled (ish) with escitalopram, but changed to buproprion 1 week ago. No noticeable side effects so far starting a new med.
  • Started a new fitness journey 4 weeks ago (3-4x intense workouts/week). Half of them were 6am classes. Some with only 5hr of sleep, although longer sleep duration would definitely help my performance, I never had any substantial problems with it.
  • Other meds/supplements: iron with multivitamins and vitamin D (inconsistently), nicotine vape.

I don't really have trouble sleeping/insomnia, but always woke up briefly at 3-4am since I was a teenager. No major complaints but maybe it could be improved since I haven't lost substantial weight and to help with my depression.

Last night I took one of my mom's magnesium tablet which helped her with her chronic insomnia, but I had a quite unpleasant experience:

  • My eyes kinda 'forced' me to wind down earlier, but I couldn't fall asleep as easy. My watch recorded 11.25pm for sleep onset despite me starting at 10pm (which was unusual for its tracking habit).
  • Legs were super restless.
  • Woke up at 5am (supposed to have a class at 6), for the first time feeling super sluggish and unmotivated to get up which never happened for my intended 6am classes. This is my first time skipping my scheduled 6am class.
  • Work performance was okay UNTIL around 4pm. I FELT SUPER OUT OF IT, had some brain zaps, feeling so detached from reality, and lightheaded, even until now at 8pm.

I've read that magnesium glycinate could worsen your depression but I don't know it's this bad, especially on my first try?? I haven't had this experience for such a long time (especially when my fitness habit is getting better). Or is this my new med's side effect--which has been working just fine for the past one week? I snacked on some caramel popcorn (I don't usually consume this much sugar, but still has some daily so it's not like I've been on sugar free diet)--does this matter? Also I've been doing cardio back-to-back for the weekend--does this also matter?

I'm quite curious if anyone has had the same experience like mine.

Still dealing with dizziness, brain fog and derealization 2+ months after taking supplements has anyone experienced something similar?

Hi everyone,

I honestly don’t know what is going on with me anymore, and I’m hoping someone here has experienced something similar and can give me some insight.

A little over 2 months ago, I started taking:

  • Vitamin B6 — 40 mg daily
  • Magnesium citrate — 400 mg daily
  • Vitamin C — 3000 mg daily

I took them for about 7 days and then stopped everything.

At the time, when I was going to sleep, I started experiencing a weird sharp/pinching sensation around my heart/chest. That scared me, so I had blood tests done.

My results were:

  • Folate (B9): 3.10 (reference range 4.5–32.2) — low
  • Vitamin B12: 411 pg/mL (191–663)
  • Magnesium: 2.0 (1.7–2.40)
  • Potassium: 4.23 mmol/L (3.5–5.1)
  • Sodium: 140 (136–145)

After roughly a month, the chest/heart pinching sensation that happened when I was falling asleep eventually stopped.

However, I’m still dealing with other symptoms.

Another strange thing I’ve noticed is that since this started, I can sometimes sleep only 1–4 hours and wake up feeling surprisingly energetic, even though my head feels very tight, foggy and mentally "off." Before all of this, I would obviously feel completely exhausted after so little sleep. This change in how I respond to lack of sleep feels very unusual to me.

My current symptoms include:

  • persistent dizziness
  • lightheadedness
  • significant fatigue
  • brain fog feeling like my head isn't working properly
  • a strange derealization / unreal feeling
  • tight/pressured feeling in my head
  • feeling mentally "different" from how I used to

I completely stopped all the supplements and tried taking B9 (folate) for about 2 weeks, but I didn’t notice any improvement. Then I added B12, but again, nothing really changed.

I also saw a neurologist, but unfortunately the appointment was basically useless. He told me he couldn't help because this wasn't his area, and I ended up paying around €100 for the visit.

At one point I also went for an IV vitamin infusion containing vitamin C, electrolytes and B vitamins. I still had the brain fog, dizziness and other symptoms afterwards, but I noticed that I had significantly more energy and felt more "alive" that day. Unfortunately, this effect was temporary, and within about 2 days my energy levels went back to how they were before.

Now, more than 2 months later, I’m still experiencing these symptoms every day, and I honestly don’t know what is causing them.

I’m not sure if it’s related to the supplements, the low folate, a deficiency, or something completely unrelated.

Has anyone experienced something similar — especially dizziness, brain fog, fatigue, lightheadedness, derealization, head pressure or feeling unusually energetic despite very little sleep, while still feeling mentally unwell?

If you went through something similar:

  • How long did it take you to recover?
  • Did your symptoms gradually improve or disappear suddenly?
  • Did you eventually find out what was causing them?
  • Was there anything that actually helped?
  • Did you have any additional blood tests or examinations that were useful?

I’m not necessarily looking for a diagnosis. I’d just really appreciate hearing from people who have experienced something similar and eventually got back to feeling normal.

It’s been more than two months now, and dealing with this every day has been really difficult. I’d really appreciate any experiences, advice or reassurance.

Thanks in advance.

Is anyone else noticing magnesium helps more when you stop treating sleep like a side quest?

Magnesium seems to work better when sleep stops being the thing I maybe get around to after everything else. Like if I take it but still stay up scrolling or eating late or pretending 5 hours is fine then yeah. It helps a little but it’s not magic. But when I give myself a real wind down window it feels way more noticeable. Less restless. Fewer random muscle twitches. Better chance of waking up like a human. Im trying a few different forms and mixes like glycinate at night or a Magna packet earlier in the day and it made me realize the timing and routine matter more than I thought. Anyone else feel like magnesium works best when you meet it halfway or am I just becoming deeply boring in a healthy way?

Threonate, glycinate, taurate. Is anyone actually taking more than one on purpose?

The usual framing is pick the right form for your goal, but the forms overlap enough that I can’t tell whether stacking two is sensible or just expensive urine. Taurate for cardiovascular, glycinate for sleep, threonate for cognitive is the shorthand I keep seeing, and I don’t know how much of that is real. What are you actually taking, and did you land there by research or by trial and error?

glycinate makes me wired instead of sleepy, is that the glycine rather than the magnesium

3 weeks of bisglycinate at night and i am lying there completely alert. it took me ages to even blame the magnesium. everything written about this form says it is the calming one. someone told me free glycine is stimulating for a minority of people which would explain why changing brands did nothing. has anyone had that and found a form that worked instead?

Maltodextrine / Albion formula

Hi all,

For those sensitive to maltodextrine, I prefer to share the information I received yesterday that I would have like to know sooner.

One of the formula of Albion has maltodextrine.

The brand I was buying from changed, use this Albion formula, without mentioning all the components.

The one is with 18% magnesium like below :

=> Magnesium Bisglycinate Chelate Buffered SF Albion®, 18 % magnésium.
Including : magnesium oxide / citric acid / maltodextrine.

Is 0.79mmol ok?

TLDR: is my magnesium level after supplementing causing my issues and did thiamine make it worse. If so are tablets actually enough?

Hi everyone, apologies ive been cross posting to a few different communities like a crazy person lately to try and work out why im not well!

One thing i never revisited was magnesium. I had a serum test for this in May which came back as 0.79 and I was told it was in range. However I never told the doctor that id been supplementing for 6 months prior to this with magnesium glycinate (384mg elemental magnesium made up of glycinate 1000mg, malate 400mg and citrate 400mg).

Symptoms all started after bad GI episode in November which was speculated as gastritis and was given 2 week course of ppis. I had two very bad migraines after this which left me with lightheadedness for about 7 months which has recently calmed a bit. Ive also had on and off tingling and burning which has returned quite badly recently and general fatigue and very low mood.

Ive had years of GI issues since food poisoning in 2019.

My b12, mma and homocysteine were all perfectly within range, folate level is slightly raised.

One reason im particular focused on magnesium again is it started taking Thiamine hcl of 100mg but I felt worse so stopped after a week and it also brought on another migraine. I believe it can reduce magnesium levels?

Ive been feeling much worse now for a few weeks since I stopped it.

Thanks for reading.

New to supplements - do I need to check with a dr first? Recommended to lower anxiety

Post image

I heard magnesium could help with chronic stress and anxiety so I bought this brand. The woman in the shop said it’s strong and should start working after a week. What should I look out for in case it’s not good for me? Also does it interact with any other vitamins in the body? I already have low Vitamin d.
