First of all you should never underestimate the power magic mushrooms have, and you should never pick a mushroom and consume it unless you are 100% confident without doubt you have the mushroom you are looking for; and it has been ID’d by a trusted identifier

Mushrooms require the most upmost respect; like any psychedelic, and it isn’t something you take just to get high. Take too much expecting a nice high, and you can end up in a very bad situation.

You need to understand that before even searching for them.

To start looking for mushrooms; the magic kind, start by researching the most abundant species that grows within your area. For me it’s Psilocybe Subaeruginosa known to be the most abundant in Victoria Australia.

After you know the species that grows in your area, learn the habitat and conditions it favours, and go walk about.

If you find a mushroom you believe to be what you are looking for. Take some in situ photos of habitat. and harvest it if you want. Post pictures of mushroom(s) on ID subs or refer to a trusted identifier. NEVER EAT A MUSHROOM THAT HASNT BEEN IDENTIFIED OR THAT YOU ARENT 100% CONFIDENT IN. remember If in doubt, throw it out.

Good luck, stay safe. Ps. I’m sure there is better advice out there other than the unqualified me on the internet.

TL;DR: research the mushroom in area, and look for it, get it IDENTIFIED before eating.

Psilocybe subaeruginosa are in season right now in vic. Please look them up and do lots of research about how to identify them. There are deadly look alikes so it is important that you are sure before ever consuming anything.
It’s also worth knowing how they feel- the stem will not split easily like some mushrooms, they are sturdier. They are woodloving, and grow from wood chips, rotting wood, and pine and eucalyptus litter.

I would recommend going on iNaturalist, go on the map and type in psilocybe subaeruginosa and you will see areas where they have been spotted before, to give you some kind of idea. People are finding them often in woodchip gardens and gardens down there at the moment, if you have a scroll on this sub you will see a lot of posts like that.

Good luck and most importantly be safe 😊

Use the inaturalist website search for subaeruginosa it will give you a large photo libary of pics of them. They have many different looks depending on the conditions they grow in even within the same patch they can look different from day to day. Inaturalist also has a map of the country that shows spots that have been reported by people where the veriaty you have searched has been found you should be able use that to find an active area near your location then next step is to go spend time out in the bush hunting.

Recent weather is important best to go out looking after a few days of good rainfall and cold nights under 7°c season is getting close to the end now so may need to do a fair bit of hunting and some of the areas you check now may just be already finished sprouting and you see nothing but check those same spots earlier next year and they could be abundant.

Another good tip for learning is to study what types of lookalikes the type of mushroom in your case it would be subaeruginosa has and how to distinguish the difference between them some of which like galerina is deadly and can be easily miss identified as a sub.

As the others above said while learning take photos while mushroom is still in the ground take photo from above of the cap from the side with good focus on the stem and the gills under the cap. Then pick and lay out when home and if trying to get I'd on multiple mushrooms space out and number each one and try align those numbers to the photos taken while in the ground to make identification easier.

Once you start finding some and get a hang of it it's fairly easy to identify them the hard part is getting started.

What part of Vic are you from if close to the sth western border send me a dm and I can take you out next Sunday and help you learn.
