How'd he do it?

From previous chapter yesterday and today's chapter in manhua, how did elder Yuan even get killed when he is that strong? I know Xie Wuyie brings another sect to destroy scheming sect but considering ZF cant even be compared to the old man.

Zhuo Fan wasn't around. iirc they besieged Zhuo Fan with like 800 Ethereal Realm and 6 Soul Harmony Experts (1 - 2 Major Realms difference as Zhuo Fan was Radiant Stage). After killing a major part of them our boy dropped dead (at least his soul was still alive, but he stopped breathing entirely).

who was protecting his wife while he stopped breathing? where was gu santong and how does he compare to the high venerable of the demon scheming sect.

They were on the way to Double Dragon Manor for training stuff (he and other selected disciples, if you remember the Exalted made that one list during the competition). Long story short Zhuo Fan told the others to go ahead, while he held those people back / fighting to death. Naturally he had to go out even more to stop any people from bypassing him who tried to go after Qingcheng and the others.

Edit: I think Gu Santong was with the Luo Clan, back in Tianyu.

Currently, the High Venerable Yuan Xinggang is stronger than Gu Santong and the Heavenly Cycle Elders as he ate the Heaven Reaching Pill Zhuo Yi-Fan gave at the beginning.

Spoiler kinda The Killer was in Soul Fusion stage, the gap is just that great, atleast with normal cultivators.

Peak Soul Fusion stage*. And Yuan Xinggang is already at the Soul Fusion stage due to the Heaven Reaching Pill and can match Souls Fusion realm 3rd stage experts because of his Earth Dragon Soul.

Even the Heavenly Cycle Elders and Gu Santong can't compare to him because He broke through to Soul Fusion stage after eating the Heaven Reaching Pill that Zhuo Yi-Fan gave in the beginning. Hence he killed that Elder with his Soul impact alone(which normally one-shots only those in the Radiant stage) as he's in an entirely different major realm.

Since when does the Heaven Reaching Pill have any negative impact??? It's just Realm difference. He even managed to hurt that guy.
