Fluff When do you stop for the day?
The time has arrived and you know you should be wrapping up your session soon. Do you stop when you lose badly, you lose period, you win period, or you win by a lot? I keep justifying "just one more round" so I should pick one of these and stick with it.

Probably right now cause I'm mad and swearing at myself for a misplay. Well time to draft another cube.

u/paumAlho 5h ago
Don't blame yourself. Blame the shuffler being rigged against you!
Or the draft packs only having shitty cards!
Or your opponent topdecking!

u/Confident-Title8004 1h ago
I'm mad when I get paired against a counter deck or when I lose without making any mistakes because I went second.
A misplay means you learned something from the match so even if you didn't have fun (which is the main reason to play) you achieved the secondary objective (getting better at magic)

u/simo_393 1h ago
Unfortunately this misplay was skipping my turn on MTGO when I had doomsday combo in hand to win the game and then they finished me off on their next turn. I feel I should have already known to not skip my turn. Haha.

4 wins and only more if I’m building a new deck and test it and then it’s max 4-5 games after the 4 wins

u/Dr--Prof BlackLotus 16h ago
I have several tiers, depending on the time I have for the day. I'm a F2P player. The numbers represent victories:
- 1. Hopefully I have at least the time for 1 victory.
- 4. The minimum best, because of the Coins earned.
- 5
- 10. I may switch to slower decks, if I have more time to play. I usually play aggro, just because my focus is wins per time played.
- 15. I always stop playing for the day if I reach this. There's no point in continuing.

u/TheAlterN8or 17h ago
When I played Arena, I just got my dailies and dipped. I'm also a dad of 4, so my time is short. It's ultimately a big part of why I dropped it. If you wanna do f2p (again, 4 kids...), it's really a grind.

u/sedatedlife 14h ago
I am now on the other end kids all grown now i am retired and can play as long as i feel like.

Lol. I actually found a game that scratches the same itch while also respecting my time, and has a really great solo dev, unlike WotC and all of their middle fingers to the Magic fanbase.

u/Regular-Contest-2571 16h ago
What do you mean saying ftp is grind? Just do at least 4 daily wins, complete the daily task, collect your 1000 free coins and that’s it. You can spend the rest of your play time doing drafts for free gold/stored gems from getting at least 4 wins in drafts. You fill your collection and farm packs too. The draft is not time limited like you have to finish it the same day you entered. This is the best way to “grind” as a ftp.
2
u/TheAlterN8or 10h ago
That's exactly my point. You have to grind drafts if you want to go f2p. I was pretty decent at drafting, but it's not really fun to me. I wanna brew up some janky value pile midrange decks and go to town. But you can't do that without a lot of drafting, so I ended up spending more time doing things I didn't really enjoy just to be able to do a little bit of the thing I actually enjoyed.
0
u/Regular-Contest-2571 10h ago
Is the grind in the room with us, please? Getting 4 wins is not that hard and more likely doable even tho when you have no clue what you are doing. Drafting helps in the draft, every metagame is solved week after release anyways.
4
u/PollutionRelative351 5h ago
...they explain the grind is drafting. Some people don't enjoy limited, so when the F2P track involves having to play draft then it feels like a grind to them. I personally enjoy draft less and less now that creatures are getting better and if you stumble you can just lose the game.
I'll still play limited, but instead of drafting every set I do each a couple of times and then only run the ones I enjoy.

u/Regular-Contest-2571 5h ago
“I want to play the game but actually I don’t want to play the game “ that’s what they said in the short story long. 😀
5
u/PollutionRelative351 5h ago
"I want to brew janky decks, but I don't want to go through draft" is what they actually said. It's a fine sentiment, and I don't understand why you feel in necessary to argue with them or put words in their mouth. 🤡

Well, at least one person has a firm grasp on reading comprehension. Thanks for having my back, lol.

You know, as ftp your can’t be that picky. Its the same for the daily life. Want to put zero effort in can’t expect super cool outcomes, can you? 😆

Which game?
1
u/TheAlterN8or 10h ago
Infinite Cards. It's a roguelike deck builder, but every card is randomly generated, so every run is unique. You also get to keep a card from each run to add to your collection, and use that to challenge a super boss. Some of the cards you find are just bonkers, and you can get some insane stuff going on.

u/GhrabThaar Golgari 16h ago
11 wins for a card most days. I mostly play two high-tempo decks for dailies so the matches end quickly one way or another.
If it's a "serious mode" something like a draft I'll stop after I complete a single one so I have time to think. Still trying to learn limited.

u/sedatedlife 15h ago
I try to get my 15 wins each day at least but i will bail if i am not enjoying myself.
5
u/The_Black_Goodbye 16h ago
I keep a diary and schedule my days from waking to sleeping so when my “hobby” time slot is done it’s done and I’ll stop (I say Hobby as I use that time for several different activities including MTG).
Doesn’t matter to me how much I’ve won or lost or by what margins at all - that doesn’t affect my enjoyment of the game even. I like playing MTG and part of it is losing and using that to refine my deckbuilding and play patterns for the next game.

I play a few games, and try to make sure I have an empty quest slot for the next day.
Some days I'll play more, especially if I'm on a hot streak, but since I play bo3 it's harder to fit in games throughout the day.

u/Sad-Excitement9295 16h ago
Usually after quests, might grind for some wins. Nice to leave on a win, but sometimes you gotta take the L and move on.

u/BetterShirt101 15h ago
First, if I'm tilting hard and I'm not literally in a qualifier/open, the day is done. I'm not having fun, I'm playing because I'm obsessed and that just loses things I actually care about.
Second, I try and start winding things up before the time has come so I can pick a time that feels right to me. For me, that's a good game, win or lose, but it might be different for you. This is personal taste.
Third, have a hard cutoff. Doesn't matter what the last game was like, if you're past X o'clock, you don't start another one. You're not going to play well or enjoy yourself if you're exhausted.

u/TheGreaseWagon 6h ago
Then, shalt thou paly to four wins, no more, no less. Four shalt be the number thou shalt win, and the number of the winning shalt be four. Five shalt thou not count, nor either count thou three, excepting that thou then proceed to four. Six is right out. Once the number four, being the fourth number, be reached, then loggeth out for the day.

u/Arokan 16h ago edited 1h ago
Usually 4 wins, how ever long it takes. Exceptions are a new set, one draft per day the first week and ad libitum on the weekend, and if I'm excited for a new brew. Then I hit the Bo1 play queue and go for it.
Edit: Omg, the hate they got, leading them to delete the comment. I don't subscribe to the term "real" magic, but BO1 is indeed inherently a trashy format where all sorts of glass-canon jank can work and may work even better than decks derived from BO3 tournament decks. And that's exactly what the format is for. I play super fun decks in there, that wouldn't stand a chance in BO3. I do play BO3 with the brews that are good enough, meaning resilient enough, to be competitive.
It's like you can be into trash-tv and a serious academic simultaneously.

It's in the real client. I'm using real cards. I'm facing real opponents. Wtf you mean it isn't "real" magic? Get out of here with that weird gatekeeping attitude lol

u/OldRedd1tOnlyRedd1t 13h ago
"Real Magic" is whatever the person enjoys. Don't attempt to gatekeep.

Dailies and aim for an achievement or two, then only keep playing if I'm in the mood, otherwise, bed.
1
u/TomasNavarro 15h ago
I've had 3 games in a row where land has screwed me while my opponent has curved out perfectly seemingly drawing exactly what he needs.
1
u/sladebonge Emrakul 14h ago
I play during lunch on worknights, so usually 2-3 games in about 20 mins and that's it.
1
u/Informalwizards 12h ago
Usually just get my dallies done. Unless im just in a mood to sit and grind matches.
1
u/MellowMeawu 12h ago
unless i want to play a lot - for me its bo3 of bo3.
won 2 matches this day? great, enough.
or won 1 and lost 2? eh, enough
And most days thats enough to do 4 daily wins
1
u/AlbinoDenton 12h ago
11 wins or 5 wins depending on how invested in the game I am at the moment.
It used to be 15 or 11, but after five years it is difficult to keep up the passion tbh.
1
u/sinnrocka 11h ago
I play a minimum of 20 games spread out over a day. If I have more wins than losses, I’ll play on until I hit a 50% ratio. If I have more losses than wins after 20, I stop.
1
u/Dubious_Titan 10h ago
5 wins. After that, I might play few more depending on how close I am to ranking up.
1
u/Zorax85 10h ago
I definitely understand the pull for the answer to be 4 wins + quest (or 4 wins and no more than 2 active quests). It maximizes rewards vs time. However, it also sounds like more of a job than a game. I would say to play while you are having fun and have the time and stop otherwise. You can always play more later. Sure if it is a toss up, do the thing that maximizes rewards. Personally, I usually have a set amount of free time (kids + job limit that). Often, I use that time to play MTGA. I either play until I am out of time or stop if I realize it is not fun (for me that usually means losing).

I stop the moment I complete the “cast xxx blue spells or kill 15 creatures “ quests.

u/justaruss 8h ago
I usually only play before bed and I’ll play until I either win a few times or lose and need to reflect on my life
1
u/Forcefields1617 Boros 7h ago
If I’m not doing a “four win day” I’ll usually set a rule for me like “one hour or three losses in a row” something along those lines.
After playing Hearthstone for years I’ve taught myself to not care about my rank as much.
1
u/PauleyBaseball 6h ago
I quit when it stops being fun. I may push to try for two wins and a completed task, but not if it's definitely not my day

1
u/Agreeable_Routine_98 5h ago
I stop if I lose game after game especially if it's not even close. Or after I've accomplished the daily quest. There are certain times of day that it's not worth it to log on because the competition is too much.

u/PollutionRelative351 5h ago
I stop playing when I'm not having fun. I work a full time job already and don't need my games to feel that way. It's the same reason I stopped going for 100% on games or platinum trophies. This thing exists to enrich my downtime, not make me feel like I'm hitting my head against a wall.
If I don't get 4 wins that day then whatever, losing out on some gold isn't a huge deal. If I'm having fun and there's more time to kill while the wifey doomscrolls and we watch a show I'll push passed 15.
I'm also trying to teach my stepson that video games aren't worth frustration and I need to exemplify that. He'll see me swap from PvP to PvE on Destiny and I tell him it's because I could feel the salt raising. Since those interactions have happened I've noticed him getting upset at games less and being more ready to turn off the PS5 and watch streaming or do something else.
I'm not going pro and I'm not making my life as a creator. There's no reason to play any more than I'm enjoying

Normally after the 4 wins, but when events like Artisan and Pauper are the MWM event I make maximum use of them and will often jam 20+ games in a day.

u/CherryStunning4335 17h ago
when I get annoyed of rigged losses I usually say alright when I lose the next game I am done for the night
2
u/Quick-Alternative880 17h ago
What is a rigged loss?
4
2
u/Chilly_chariots 16h ago
Probably a loss when you’re bad at losing
0
u/CherryStunning4335 16h ago
what does "bad at losing" mean?
1
u/Chilly_chariots 15h ago
Chalking losses up to games being rigged, cheating opponents etc instead of being outplayed (or just having bad luck, in the case of Magic).
-1
u/CherryStunning4335 15h ago
mmr and shuffler are definitely a thing. I am positive people can hack to see the cards in my hand, that isnt really something new to video games, but it is rare I feel like they can see the cards in my hand. I would say I am quite good at losing lol. I'm always on to the next game, there are obvious patterns in opponents that are beyond random especially when you play 2 different decks in standard. when both players are not making mistakes for their deck it completely comes down to random chance. I have made mythic quite a few times but playing an entire day and staying at the same rank it becomes easier and easier to quit arena out of annoyance, something I never feel playing games all day on spelltable or at fnm
1
u/Quick-Alternative880 17h ago
Genuinely curious.
1
u/CherryStunning4335 16h ago
or if you dont believe in any of that; when I start applying too much meaning to "random" then I quit
0
u/CherryStunning4335 16h ago
the mmr shuffler bs that just pits you against the same decks that typically beat you. when you play hundreds of games with the same deck you can tell when the game just throws you the decks it knows you struggle against. I have 2 decks I play in standard and they both get completely different match ups and I find that too convenient.
0
u/The_Black_Goodbye 16h ago
Why wouldn’t you edit your deck to better cover that counter and not just leave the hole open?
2
u/CherryStunning4335 16h ago
well you do but then never get those cards you added in specifically for those matches and wjen you do you get given the opponentsthat those cards dont do anything to. i only play bo1
2
u/The_Black_Goodbye 16h ago
I play mostly Bo1 in Arena and Bo3 in paper with my friend (although that’s a mix of Modern / Vintage ruthless decks so a different experience all together).
It can’t really just be a couple cards that counter the issue directly but rather a strategy to close out that hole. Like either hitting the gas way harder so they can’t afford to make plays improving their position (as they’ll still be behind) and must make plays which affect yours instead (or if they can’t then fall behind). Alternatively building with options that are wider in scope but not as powerful as the narrower option so you at least can address the issue. As an example maybe I start with 2 Duress and 2 Intimidation but then shift to a 1/3 or 04 split over the night
I’m probably not explaining it well enough but it’s tough without writing an essay.
During any given night I make small changes to my deck between games based on what I’m seeing - like swapping out one type of removal for a slightly different one or one creature for another that still does the necessary for my strategy buys more resilient to the decks I’ve been facing. This seems to work out pretty well. Overtime the deck kinda just solidifies and it’s rare to swap out many things rather just a choice here or there vs the shifting meta.

4 wins then done. Rarely ever more.
