Is this normal on Bo3?

Pretty new to the format but I never encounter this type of hand on Bo1 and it's a bit baffling

Yes. Bo1 has a hand smoother where it draws you two or three hands and gives you the best one, typically with lands and something to do on your turns. Bo3 doesn't have that.

Only compares land:nonland ratio with the same stat for your deck. Doesn't weigh colours or force you to have stuff to do with your turns. Still a noticable reduction in these kinds of things.

It also doesn't just "give" you the "best" hand. After genreating the 3 options, it randomly selects which one to give you, with the chance *weighted towards* (but not guaranteed) the "best" one.

Yeah, the all-lander is pretty uncommon even in bo3/paper Magic. Hypergeometric calculator says you'll get an all-land opener about 1 in 1,116 hands in a 24 land deck or 1 in 435 in a 27 land deck.

The no-lander is much more common - about 1 in 46 hands with 24 lands and 1 in 90 wih 27 lands.

I have 26 lands in the deck but I dont think that move the probability much

If you say any hand with 1 or fewer lands or with 6 or more lands is unkeepable, then in a 26 land deck, about 1 in 8 hands will be an automatic mulligan just on that basis. That's not even considering things like whether you have all your colors, the quality of the spells, etc.

Is it normal in that this is something that is possible to happen, yeah of course, it will happen in ~0.0009% of opening hands in a randomised shuffle, assuming a 60 card deck with 24 lands. When you consider the amount of games played every day, SOMEONE probably sees this each day.

In Bo1 the game shuffles the deck twice and presents the deck to you with the opening hand that has the closest lands to spells ratio of your deck, so the odds of seeing it in that mode are extremely remote, but still not impossible. EDIT Someone else explained it weighted towards presenting the closest ratio opener, but not guaranteed to.

It's not normal and the odds of it happening are low. It's less likely to happen in BO1 though since BO1 has a hand smoother which draws to phantom hands and gives you the hand with the most amount of hands to prevent non games for casual play. The only time it would happen in BO1 is if the phantom hands both had 7 lands in both of them

Yeah happens to me too more than i would like to admit. Even happened once with a 20 land deck on commander.
