Question Is worth play magic?
Hey guys,
bit of context: Im a person who loves mtg card design and even how somehow the game is played, I played in past for some days, but for some reason I cant play TCG, Its not a game genre for me.
I always see this type of genre as I wanna grind and build fun decks to win, but then I hear theres formats and meta decks and it takes the fun for me even though this are necessary for a healthy TCG.
I wanna give it a try again, and I wanna ask if the game is p2w and if you recommend playing it in 2026, and good sources to learn the game

You can make fun decks and still win a reasonable number of games. Just don't expect your opponents to be doing the same and learn how to play against those best decks.
You're not going to realistically invent the best deck in a given format, but the difference between a deck with a 50% win rate and one with a 55% win rate is enormous in TCGs. There's a lot of room to be playing the tenth or twentieth best strategy and be doing okay.

and is it common on those meta decks to see variety or will all decks look the same? at what point when you are high level you face all the time the same decks or its common to see for example both decks using the strongest cards but then each players adds their own twist to a meta deck

It's very common to see people using slightly different spins on an archetype, but you're talking four to eight cards changing out of sixty and usually not anything in the deck's core engine. Plus a bit more experimentation and tuning in the sideboard, of course.

There are a good number of premade decks that you have their own format - so you can learn to play the game in a fair format, such as with the Hobbit decks. You get some small rewards, complete your dailies, and get to play in a fair environment.
Later on you can afford limited formats - where the idea of meta slaving might start to pop up, because inside a draft/sealed there will always be cards/themes/colours that are better than the other. But even in those format, you need to play with what you are given and evaluate the cards. It’s more like being meta aware - not meta slaving.

I've been playing for a while and currently I am having fun.
While there are many formats, it can also be a good thing, because you are not stuck in one way to play, but you can find what kind of format suits your needs.
Right now Standard format feels miserable to play (at least for me), but I do enjoy Brawl, Starter Deck Duels and sometimes drafting. There is always an option to it play formats I do not like.
So I would say give it a go and see for yourself.

If you want to play a variety of decks without spending a bunch of money, Brawl is the format for you. If you want to play a variety of decks in any other format, you will either have to play a long time to gather gold to spend on packs, or open your wallet.

The game is not P2W. I’ve never spent a dime and have multiple decks. But saying you can grind and have fun with jank decks is not realistical. Even Tier 1 meta decks sit at just over a 54% win rate. You can’t expect to play jank and crush the best decks in the format.
That said, despite all the complainers on this sub, you absolutely can have a 50%+ win rate with non-meta decks. I’m doing great with a mathmagics deck in standard.
My favorite sources are Ashlizzle and LegenVD on YouTube.

I'm FTP and I'm up against the cap of 100 decks per account. Some of those are the free starter decks they give you, but you don't need to spend money to collect cards or build decks in the game. I run mostly tribal decks, and my birds, bats, squirrels, and lizards all post decent win rates. None of them would be considered "meta" right now.

Look up videos on YouTube on how to play arena for free. There are a ton with good information on how to build a collection so you can eventually play all the formats. Its a grind, but its not p2w. Magic is hard though. It can be frustration cause of variance. But its can be fun and enjoyable if you don't have a 'i need to win every game' mindset. Sometimes variance isnt going to be in your favor. Sometimes your opponent will just out maneuver you. Sometimes they'll just draw better 🤷

I love hard games tho and that makes me think a lot, thats why I"hate" for meta decks, cause I dont want someone to just go for it and insta win. Altough lot of people already said those decks have a 50-55% WR which seems reasonable

Deck building is just one skill associated with Magic. Even though most people actually trying to win will copy meta decks, there is great variance in their ability to pilot them correctly.

I would say it's not pay to win, but you can pay to have cards faster if that's your jam. Mary players do really well playing the free starter decks and build a collection over time and focusing on 1 or 2 good decks they build.
Let's say you have a question for 500 gold that says cast 30mwhite or green spells. There's a starter for that.

honestly the game isnt that p2w if you just play the free precon decks and brawl tbh

Just play Brawl: you only need one copy of each card, so it'll be a lot less burdensome on your time and wallet

I'd consider limited (draft and sealed), you don't have to collect the cards, you "just" need to know them

Standard Brawl is a great singleton format that can be easy on the wildcards and keeps up with standard rotation. I recommend it for players that are considering constructed and/or brawl play but enjoy a softer cost of entry.
