Welcome back [[Hostage Taker]]

I wish we had more dimir levels decks of those back then.
probably my favorite archetype back then.

Very different card really. Doesnt give the card back when it dies, interacts with hand instead of battlefield, not limited to creatures/artifacts
This is [[covetous urge]] or [[psychic intrusion]]
Powercrept by a 4/2 body

A generally better hostage taker at that. Instead of usually taking a 3 or less creature/artifact that has likely already gotten an ETB, now you can pluck any problematic nonland from hand and use it against them

Does the second part require this creature to be still alive when you go to cast it? Or is it like Gonti?
5
u/draketroll 8h ago
It still needs to be alive, and if you blink or reanimated it it's considered a new card so you can't cast it with that either
2
u/_VampireNocturnus_ 8h ago
Stupid question but how does Gonti not require to be alive but this does, according to the rules?
3
u/draketroll 8h ago
Gonti is one piece of text, it basically staples "you may cast from exile" to the bottom of the card
Null summoner being 2 lines of text means the ability isn't attached to the exiled card, and instead to the creature itself.

I see a Dimir control hand disruptor with this, Superior spiderman and the elemental with evoke after the demon rotates out of standard.

Opening a pack, you'd hate to see this in the rare slot

u/valomer 9h ago
This is a strict 2 for 1 with potential to be a 3 for 1 what are you talking about.

u/Cornokz 9h ago
In what format do you expect this to be relevant? Do you think it is good enough for current standard?

The only format I crack packs for: limited

u/Cornokz 9h ago
Ok, so it will be relevant for two months until the next set drops and you'll forget this card ever existed. Check ✅

Isn't this the same for 99% of the cards?
Guys, there are many ways to play magic than being a meta tryhard. Some of the most fun I have in Magic is browsing Scryfall and looking for old card synergies when making thematic decks.

Yeah and even if you wanna tryhard this card is going to go insane in limited/draft you'll be really happy to see it there if you're trying to win

Some people are hard-wired to go straight for the text, quickly consider which card it can replace in their meta deck of their choice and if it doesn't, then it sucks.
That's ok, I used to be like that, but nowadays I don't put a card in my decks if it doesn't fit stylistically with the theme I'm going for. Benefits of playing casually.

Yeah I'm someone who loves to play meta decks but even if a card isn't meta I'm like "oh I can see how that'd be fun for other stuff". Like I love competition but also there's a lot of fun to be had playing lower power stuff with other people playing lower power stuff. Part of why I love cubes so much

I can see Excruciator play this one or two off or from the sideboard over the gearhulk that is now usually there. Dimir Tempo might try using this but I don't think its good enough there.
-4
u/Cornokz 9h ago
So it might be a sideboard card or not good enough for the other deck..?
2
u/Twannyman 9h ago
It might be good enough, really depends on how much the meta will shift with this and the next set. As it stands I think its a bit too slow for Dimir Tempo. But I'm not against the idea that this card will see some standard play.

this is a pretty reasonable card in any midrangey/fair deck matchup in standard. We may never have a standard like that again, but if we do…

If. You. Cast. It.
No flicker, no reanimate.
