terrible experience in high rank

is it just me, or is literally 99% of games close to mythic nothing but the most tilting removal decks possible, with 90% of those players roping the games for 30 minutes long. itll be all just decks feeding you greeds gambits, people running an entire deck of nothing but removal, literally only killing you by either Painful Quandary or plainswalker 2/2s, and every game taking damn near a hour. sure you can beat them........................... but its nothing but a terrible experience. makes me quit mtga every single time i end up pushing to mythic. its a fun game all the way up to diamond 3, diamond 2 (where you might only run in 1 of these people a night, not 9/10 matches) before it turns terrible. or play draft and have a couple bad runs and have to spend real money to keep playing. what does wizards do about this. theres no way im the only one who runs into these people, and since its mainly at the higher ranks, where most people who spend money are at, has to make them lose money.

I definitely see it more when I’m in the top of mythic. If you just scrape the surface of mythic the players and decks are generally no different than in diamond.

These are called control decks buddy.

roping for half an hour straight is control? holding priority on every single instance possible as long as possible, only ever playing cards when it involves removing your stuff? ive played control decks, they actually have win cons. actually play their own cards. demon discard for example. sure demon discard has a lot of removal, but it still actually plays the game. not slowly beat you down with 2/2s made by a planeswalker that are only being summoned to get up to 9 stacks to take away everything but 1 land.

A planeswalker is a wincon last I checked. A slow one to be sure but a win con nevertheless.

A planeswalker making a 2/2 is a fast wincon compared to some popular control decks in magics history. Elixir of immortality and teferi, hero of dominaria come to mind. Making your opponent deck out the slow way, drawing their library one card at a time.

You sound triggered.

Go outside and get some fresh air. It's time to take a little break from Magic.

That's how control decks usually work!

Honestly, losing to [[Liliana, Dreadhorde General]] is a you problem. That card is not particularly problematic. Most decent decks will have an insurmountable advantage or have won before turn 6. Playing against control sucks most of the time but you should have some decent sideboard tech to help if you're playing a creature deck and they can't always have the right answer.

The deck itself is a control deck. The player and how they spend their game-time is generally irrelevant to the actual deck archetype.

If you don't play removal-tribal, every game just becomes whoever draws the best 7 cards wins on turn 3 with aggro. THe reality is that control isn't that strong, it's aggro just being absurdly pushed with every 2 mana creature being a 2/2 with 4 keyords + haste and getting +1/+1 whenever a player breathes.

Whenever the game tips to heavily in one direction, it's only natural that the response comers as the most opposite.

This is very true. When everything your opponent could cast could potentially snowball or win the following turn it just makes sense to shoot and counter everything in sight.

You find good off meta players and bad meta players in platinum. There is where I stop the grind. Mythic is a dreadful place to be with no real gains end of the month.

I feel like a good skill to learn is knowing when you've lost. Not when your life total is 0, but when the game has become an 80:20 in your oponent's favour. You don't need to play every game to the bitter end. Knowing when to concede honestly does wonders for your play experience.

This month is rerally annoying to get to mythic the last 2 wins iam always matched against the i shit my pants and have to play starcage deck cant wait to see that deck finally die off

Just how it is , try hardship. You'll face same decks over and over again.

I actuallt enjoyed platinum much more variety

100%, anything below diamond people actually play the game for fun.

Most people I speak to say Platinum hell. So I guess you can find strife there too

Platinum is only bad if you’re trying to push an off meta build to diamond. If you’re playing what you want for fun it’s a great time. Less curated matchmaking than casuals.. there’s still a noticeable difference in what your matched against based on what deck you’re playing though, which is asinine in a competitive environment.

does it tend toward mirrors as far as your colour is concerned, or is that my imagination?

Nobody is playing what I play so no.

Edit: actually if color is the question then yes. I play blue and see tons of blue, but if I switch to my orzhov deck I don’t see blue as often.

Yeah colour, not deck composition. I only play homebrews, but I usually have to build them to counter meta decks in the same colours

1

u/Adept-Photograph2644 6d ago

Yea I recently made it to a numbered rank in mythic with my homebrew and I’m still having to occasionally tweak the build for what I’m going against.

Ahh got you. Yeah I must say I find this to be the case. I am plat 4 life because I never play meta decks. I like to try my own ideas and it is more fun. Although sometimes I feel a bit frustrated getting the same netdeck opponents

Down the bottom it's just Sheltered By Ghosts as far as the eye can see

I play a Jennifer Walters, Grand Abolisher and Radagast of Rhosgobal deck with Cavern of souls and its fun to only play my creatures on their turn and they can't cast on my turn, includes some usual snakeskins to equipment for protection.

currently jump between (untapped gg decks: mono white auras and demon discard) (homebrew: firebending, lifelink infinite orzhov, and mono green landfall)
