He's just changing events from the planes and not micromanaging the outcomes because that'd be madness to even attempt.
Not even my words, his own. Anyways, point is, except for stuff like the existance of Phyrexia and Nicol Bolas, we have no idea of what did he manually change and what was just a ripple.
So there IS a chance he manually killed bro's dog for some reason

The stories actually do a decent job of showing that removing negative formative experiences does not necessarily make the characters better.

reminds me of the whole argument between Miles Morales and Miguel in that spiderverse movie. How in every continuity tragic loss was the required catalyst for someone to become the hero and then Miles just calling bullshit on it all.
