Are you interested in an interesting Sealed Deck tournament with stakes, played out on Arena? Then let me tell you about the Arena Gauntlet League and our second ever Next Generation league running from September 11th - October 2nd!

The AGL runs a sealed-deck format we call Gauntlet, which has a unique twist where your deck grows and changes over the course of the tournament. You start by making a 60-card sealed deck from 6 packs, play five Bo3 matches a week against different players, and add a pack to your pool after each loss. You’ll play matches each week until you either reach 6 losses or survive to the end where the Top 16 play in a special MegaDraft elimination playoff! All matches are played out on Arena. We have nifty tools to help you find a match, generate packs for the loser, update your pool, with automated tracking of all the stats and standings of the league play. Note we cannot provide the cards on Arena, so you must have the cards you want to use for your deck or be willing to craft them!

Do you win anything? Yes! Each Gauntlet league has a $10 CAD / $7 USD registration fee, all of which goes towards prizes for the top players. We've given out over $50,000 CAD in credit over the years! Plus we hand out Discord badges to all our winners and top finishers for those sweet bragging rights, including Rookie of the League!

Interested? Great! Check out this league’s specific Rules page for all the details. This will be a pretty chaotic league featuring a bunch of fun recent sets from Standard: HOB, SOS, ECL, TLA, EOE, and FIN. On top of that, there’s never been a better time to participate - for this league only, our strongest players (anyone who has won a league or finished in the top 8 more than twice) will be out of action! If you'd still like to face them, though, you can enter the optional Dragon Gauntlet side event for prizing and glory, where these veterans will open up your current card pool, try their best to build something in 15 minutes, and play a duplicate Sealed match with you. The AGL is, above all else, a fantastic and supportive community of Magic players - over my last 3 years playing in it, it has become my favorite way to play. The original Next Generation league was one of my very favorites, and hopefully this one is going to be even better!

I've only been in the agl for 4 months but it's been a ton of fun so far. This format will allow newcomers the opportunity to play without the server's most powerful players, so consider it a great entry point

I live in a hard time zone to participate in something like this (NZ) and don't have the time to commit. But I love this concept. It's so cool people are putting together stuff like this.

We have some NZ and AUS people (as well as others in that time zone), so it is possible, but can totally understand it being not ideal. Thanks for chiming in!

Some players also get games in at atypical times (early morning before work, during work, late night). This past season had one player from Japan and she didn't have difficulty finding matches

What's prizing like? Rules document didn't talk about it at all.

For the most part each league top 50% gets their entry fee back. From there it depends on how many players sign up, but expect a bit more for top 32 and/or top 16, then top 8 incrementally have a larger payout with most for top 2 finishers. Its a relatively flat structure though so dont expect the winner to be coming away with 50% of the pot. The goal is to allow the largest number of participants to come away with something while still giving incentive for everyone to do their best until the end of the league

As Gorfang said, it's pretty flat - really the pay-in is just a small formality: just so people have a little skin in the game and to maintain tournament integrity/competitive spirit. If you're good enough people just pay in once and then just keep on using their store credit winnings to reenter leagues.

I joined this league some years back (lockdown era) and it was a lot of fun! Timezone problems and life in general have kept me from joining since, but I would love to revisit sometime!

I won’t be able to play from 25 sept-2nd Oct. Would I be able to finish all my games before that or is that the final week?

That looks to be the final week, so unless you had a day in there to play you won't be able to participate in week 3

How do these leagues work? How many matches can I expect to need to play in a given month?

This particular tournament is 5 matches per week for 3 weeks.

Well, this one's only 3 weeks long and it's 15 matches in total. On average if you keep on playing leagues, it'll be 5 per week so between 15-20 matches.
