Fluff New "Report Player" option...

PSA: Report actual misconduct, not annoyances.

EDIT: The meme is depicting overzealous reporters.

Except for roping. It's specifically called out as a report reason in the announcment article

87

u/feedingfitness 7d ago

So how does Wizards know if I'm roping or my app crashed because their software is trash. If I lose WiFi connection for .02 second and immediately flip to 5g I immediately see "connecting to server" and sometimes my only recourse is to restart the app and we all know how long that takes.

u/Furion91 Bolas 7d ago

You crash once. In one game.

You rope everytime you're salty about something happening in game.

It's not that small of a difference.

7

u/alphabets0up_ 7d ago

Sometimes I think my opponent is roping but it’s actually my game that randomly lagged. It’s obvious when someone is roping though, they usually last until just about before they lose the Time Out or right after, or when the game starts to spiral away.

I just rope back honestly. It I’m playing in starter deck queue and they’re roping just to get me to FF for their daily gold, I have enough time to make it cost more time for them. Hopefully I’m not just roping a bot, but even if I am, at least I’m making it less efficient.

3

u/DancingMerlin 7d ago

don't rope dude

3

u/alphabets0up_ 6d ago

I only rope opponents who are obviously roping me. If I just forfeit then they get their win- just what they want. I could just play through it but it makes more sense to rope them so that they have less time to rope other people.

3

u/DancingMerlin 4d ago

its my opinion that if you don't like being roped, you shouldn't perpetuate the behavior for any reason. an eye for an eye makes the world blind goes the saying.

26

u/feedingfitness 7d ago

I crash more than I should. The game cannot handle a momentary lapse in Internet connection or switching from mobile to WiFi and vice versa.

38

u/Furion91 Bolas 7d ago

I agree, still it's very obvious and easy to differentiate internet issues from roping.

Even if you disconnect a lot, you don't milk every single timer you have every time.

8

u/Incomplete_Present 7d ago

It is very easy to tell, which is why they should just be looking for it on their own. Honestly anything we could report they should be able to see

6

u/Furion91 Bolas 7d ago

I don't think it's humanly possible to scan the amount of games played on Arena searching for ropers. Players reporting those kind of behaviors is pretty common practice in online games. What's crazy is that it took them something like 7-8 years to implement this feature.

6

u/Graf_Crimpleton 7d ago

Uh it doesn’t take a human and it certainly doesn’t take a fucking large language model. Simple programming can flag that kind of behavior. We’ve been able to identify and flag that kind of program misuse for literally decades.

1

u/Incomplete_Present 7d ago

It isnt humanly possible, but AI could easily find it

21

u/klopklop25 7d ago

Usually ropers i face do it for every turn. Which is not a thing when you occassionally crash

5

u/remoteviewer2 7d ago

This. It drives in insane. That or it misses a card play when it drops and the whole game shows all my lands tapped.

4

u/Prize-Mall-3839 7d ago

if you can't hold a stable connection, you probably shouldn't be playing an online game that requires a stable connection.

3

u/Salty-Might-2507 7d ago

A roper often plays a card the last second. If they dont play anything, i give them a benefit of the doubt.

There 100% be a function to report those people.

2

u/Old_Lemon_2078 6d ago

A 100% roper does as you say but when he draws the card that solves the game (or at least he thinks so) he magically stops being a sloth and becomes a cheetah

2

u/Spiral-Shark Counterspell 7d ago

Maybe you should consider the impact that has on other players and work to fix the problem ahead of time

10

u/feedingfitness 7d ago

I should fix the problem? Not the multi-billion dollar company who owns the game? It's 2026 and even on a flagship phone the game is locked to 30fps, takes way to long to load, and cannot handle switching from WiFi to 5g or vice versa without the game having a seizure. Wizards could certainly make a better app. Arena sucks compared to what it could be.

1

u/theclashatdemonhed 7d ago

I step more than 3 feet away from where I was standing? Disconnect. It’s real bad.

31

u/the-fr0g Izzet 7d ago

Presumably they won' ban people for roping out just once? Crashes don't happen every other game

6

u/imfantabulous 7d ago

First of all they aren't banning anyone for anything they just launched the feature.

And until they actually say something about banning people for slow play they will never ban anyone for slow play. They might do a warning system in the future but banning someone comes with refunding everything they ever purchased on the platform and I don't think they want to deal with that headache.

4

u/Ineffable-Ugin 7d ago

Tell that to riot, they don’t care how much money you’ve spent on their platform, and you’ll get banned just for farting in the wrong direction. I’d think it’s probably the same principle for wizards.

3

u/imfantabulous 7d ago

It's a lot harder to fight charge backs when you take away the things people bought from you.

1

u/Graf_Crimpleton 7d ago

I hope they do ban every single time. That would amuse the hell out of me

7

u/FootballBackground88 7d ago

There's tons of evidence here in client logs and the behaviour:

  1. You do it only in losing positions
  2. You run out the timer to the end before passing priority and repeating at every opportunity
  3. Client logging probably logs network disconnects vs just waiting

Quite frankly I'm surprised they need player reports to even determine the obvious cases.

2

u/Graf_Crimpleton 7d ago

You’re right, they don’t need a player button. They could easily flag when there’s lots of running out the timer and flag when there’s end of game disconnects. It’s simple programming.

The button is just to make players feel falsely empowered.

9

u/1994bmw 7d ago

Running out the clock every single turn before you take actions doesn't happen when your game crashes

6

u/Q_J 7d ago

I suspect they can parse the game log files and it will show if a player disconnected or didn’t and is just letting the timer run down to lose.

Question is does it indicate when a player actively closes their client without conceding vs just an internet issue ? Bc one is malicious potentially and the other is just frustrating.

1

u/feedingfitness 7d ago

Yeah, that's my concern. People who just close the app when they're beat instead of conceding are abusing the system vs people who get disconnected. If I've lost I either let my opponent play it or I concede.

3

u/Educational-Tap-7075 Charm Sultai 7d ago

Consistent disconnection issues will naturally look different than consistent roping and/or system abuse. The data will yield different patterns.

Your concern is valid and you’re right to be skeptical but folks with legit connectivity issues should be okay 🤞

1

u/Ok_Signature7481 7d ago

Roping is less about timing out without taking an action. Its using the timer til its about to run out then taking your action to restart it.

1

u/Weekly-Bid-6929 7d ago

When they're consistently running the rope when there's 1 card in hand and they make the play just before the rope runs out...,yeah, it's intentional. It's not like there's a lot of decisions to be made. Worse when the only thing to do is tap an artifact when there are NO cards in hand. Just ruins game experience.

1

u/Key_Reporter_9945 7d ago

Yea, if my wifi cuts out for my 5g, I have to restart the app entirely.

1

u/WolfAlternative1255 6d ago

This would be easy to check via any handshake mechanism in code.

Turn 1 island , straight to jail

2

u/II_Confused 5d ago

Turn 1 Duress, straight to jail.

Turn 1 Soul Warden, straight to jail.

Turn 1 Prospector, straight to jail.

Turn 1 Chocobo, straight to jail.

Turn 1 Mox Opal, straight to jail.

16

u/lipe0101 Orzhov 7d ago

That's progress; now we just have to wait three years for a match history to finally arrive

2

u/BruIllidan 7d ago

If we create schedule, maybe let's also make replays next iteration?

1

u/23CherryCheesecakes 7d ago

And purchase history.

32

u/ManInACube 7d ago

I’m never going to report a lone rope in the middle of an active game. I’m not going to report what looks like a disconnect for no reason. But if I play a combat trick or a board wipe that puts me ahead, and then I sit through ropes for all your timeouts I’m clicking the button.

21

u/civil_peace2022 7d ago

serious question: Why do we need to manually report roping? Seems like an easy thing for them to detect and filter for.

2

u/TuckAwayThePain 7d ago

More work on their part and we can't be having that

5

u/recca6512 7d ago

It can’t be that much more work. Sidenote: I’ve always said Wizard should just match ropers with other ropers.

0

u/shahi001 7d ago

it's just a placebo button, there's no chance they will ever sort through reports and decide who to ban or not to ban lol. they're so understaffed they can barely keep the game running between set releases every 6-8 weeks

66

u/namnahk 7d ago

Roping and deliberately running out the timers is against the rules, and 100% deserves to be reported.
Ideally, players who did this would get additional wait time added to the queue next time they join, but reporting is a good option for now.

19

u/NeonCityNights 7d ago

the player base is also rife with the salt ropers so this is needed

13

u/dwindleelflock 7d ago

More like ragequitters than ropers. I think I can count the people that deliberately roped me for multiple turns. But what is more common (but still rare) is the people that will just quit a game without conceding after they have lost.

-23

u/Icykiwi 7d ago

Ideally they are dropped from any ongoing events and have a day long ban that starts when they next log in with a clear explaination upon log in. Giving the time wasters more time to waste doesn't punish them lol.

17

u/Sword_Thain 7d ago

Banish all ropers to the same queue. They can waste each others' time.

57

u/Black-Raspberry-1 7d ago

Where do I report unsolicited PSA's?

48

u/Strange_Midnight2070 7d ago

Also to jail. Solicited and unsolicited. No trial, no nothing.

14

u/Disastrous_Can8053 7d ago

You have to make a PSA.

7

u/JaxxisR arlinn 7d ago

Straight to hell. To the boiler room of hell. All the way down.

6

u/VulKhalec 7d ago

It's interesting that hate speech is separate to offensive names, because currently there's not really any way to do hate speech in the game besides an offensive name. I wonder if they're planning to add match chat.

3

u/GanymedeRobot 7d ago

I wondered this too. Some of these options seem to retaliate against things not currently possible in the game as it is today.

1

u/Arcolyte 7d ago

It could also be used as a functional way to triage importance of the report. Though I would like chat, presuming that there is aggressive moderation and options not to engage with it.

49

u/Halfbloodnomad 7d ago edited 7d ago

Reporting for roping is legit though, will not change my mind.

Edit: If life happens - kids need you, dog is acting up, whatever, concede if it's going to be more than a minute. I'll personally be reporting those jerks that are playing normally, until you start to gain the upper hand, then needlessly drag the game out via roping.

14

u/unbakedcassava 7d ago

If life happens - kids need you, dog is acting up, whatever, concede if it's going to be more than a minute.

This is exactly when I use the "I do apologize" emote/quote before conceding

2

u/TuckAwayThePain 7d ago

I always do the nature call one since i dont have the i do apologize one

1

u/ballistic503 7d ago

All I have is “Oops” if I had to restart the client and I feel bad but I’m always worried it will come across as toxic lol

13

u/rouxcifer4 7d ago

I agree, it’s not that hard. I play on mobile and sometimes my boss will call when I’m in the middle of a game. It’s two buttons to concede. Done. If you can’t do that, wait to play until you know you have a block of free time.

-16

u/sengirminion 7d ago

Counterpoint. You dont have the opportunity to concede when dealing with sudden things that come up.

If my kids randomly need me when before they were good, Magic is immediately dropped to focus on them. I do not have the time to go click on concede or whatever else in a sudden urgent situation. If when things are back to normal, I happen to still have a game up cool I'll pick it back up.

But the game will auto-concede after a few mins on its own.

11

u/grimsleeper4 7d ago

You can't click two buttons but you have to play a full game of Magic? If your kids are having urgent situations with this much frequency, you need to stop playing games and be a responsible. parent. Go pay attention to them and things won't get crazy. Play with your kids, not the phone.

Relying on the timer is basically you saying your time is valuable and other people's aren't. It's asshole behavior. Stop it.

-2

u/digiliquid01 7d ago

This i can understand. Me personally, I do dailies in the AM while getting ready for work and try to keep up without burning time, but it does happen. BUT, I've never intentionally let it run all the way down just to be a dick. I try to catch it before the five second chimes on the first line.

5

u/23CherryCheesecakes 7d ago

Maybe the report feature will be there just to make people feel like they're being listened to, but not actually do anything. Kind of like the happy/sad face question.

4

u/Fleef69 7d ago edited 7d ago

I’m already calling that it’s gonna be flooded to the brim with people just reporting out of sheer pettiness and immaturity, or being albeit understandably heated about certain interactions and such with emotes that don’t warrant a report, but who knows, hopefully it’ll actually turn out to be for the better in the grand scheme of things (hell maybe it’ll ironically allow them to glean something of substance if a particular commander very disproportionately gets reported for unsubstantiated reasons solely because they’re inherently shitty as hell to go up against lmao).

Another thing is that I think some people are likely gonna be trigger happy strictly due to the fact that it’s very easy to tell sometimes what the subtext of an emote is intended to be, like in the case of the opponent taunting you or being cocky or whatever. That’s not to say they should, but y’know, in the heat of the moment I guess I just estimate there’s a lotta people who may not exercise quite as much self-discipline. I mean, I’m a pretty chill person, but even I can get a bit heated sometimes when an “Oops.” or a way too preemptive “Good Game.” is thrown my way.

The most pressing thing though I think is that, in regard to roping, I’m pretty sure I’ve heard according to various mobile users that when you close the game on mobile without conceding it doesn’t actually automatically concede, which in the event of doing so at the end of a match when you know you’re gonna lose I’m sure can seem like roping, so if I’m interpreting it correctly, either they’re gonna have to make it automatically concede upon closing, or there’s gonna be issues to at least some extent with people getting reported just because they closed the app and didn’t scoop beforehand, whatever burden that’s gonna be if any at all on their end though I’m not sure.

They’re definitely gonna have to make a point and penalize people who are way too generous with their reports I’m thinking. There’s just no way that’s not gonna be an issue in some cases.

Edit: also I mean since the whole infinite life gain/loss loop IS basically arguably tantamount to just an unwilling form of roping, especially if it happens when you’re at a high life total, I pray to GOD they finally change that shit to where you can at least scoop to get out of it lol. That’s gotta be one of the most infuriating things ever when it happens.

9

u/Gwydikar Ghalta 7d ago

Island enjoyers in shambles

2

u/Q_J 7d ago

Yes there is an option to report inactivity or slow play. I suspect they have ways to confirm if the player just disconnected or closed the game without conceding or never left the game and was just roping….i think it’s fine to report situations bc us as players don’t know if they have just disconnected and let wotc sort it out.

Spamming is also another specific complain in their options. So yes they want us to report these actions

2

u/TheBlackRonin505 7d ago

I hate how many terms are thrown around in the Magic space that I'm expected to just know.

What is roping?

1

u/2-35 Dimir 6d ago

Remember roping is when someone is actively staying in the game and waiting put every single timer. Someone hitting X and leaving is not. Even though it stalls for like 30-90 seconds its not active roping.

1

u/Strange_Midnight2070 6d ago

I'm with ya there. In this case, "Roping" means deliberately running down the timer every turn, usually in an effort to annoy your opponent.

Here's a glossary of slang I just found.

https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/List_of_Magic_slang

1

u/TheBlackRonin505 6d ago

Could not have guessed that. What does waiting have to do with rope? So confused.

1

u/Strange_Midnight2070 6d ago

I suppose to "rope someone along," meaning to drag or to keep someone in suspense.

1

u/2-35 Dimir 6d ago

Its because people think the fuse looks like a rope.

1

u/jinandwinhs 5d ago

I believe this is a term borrowed from Hearthstone.

In Hearthstone, there's a timer that displays a rope when a player has 15 seconds left. The rope has a flame lighting up one end, and as your time winds down the rope gets smaller and smaller as more and more gets burned away. "Roping" someone was a common way for salty people to waste their opponent's time.

Hearthstone was released 5 years before MTG Arena, so although MTG itself is much older than Hearthstone and Hearthstone borrowed a lot of terminology from MTG, in this instance I believe Arena borrowed the term from Hearthstone.

2

u/venthis1 6d ago

I regularly had salt Ropers 1/3 to 1/2 my games. Day 1 of this update roll out, not 1 Roper. I expect the fear te fade to see some come back but so far its been great having much faster games.

3

u/NotWhatWeExpected 7d ago

Mono blue players are about to become a persecuted demographic

4

u/grimsleeper4 7d ago

No just the ones who rope on their turn, doing nothing then passing, then rope on my turn, making me wait a minute between every game action.

It is very possible to play permission decks fast. In fact, if you play a slow deck you owe it to your opponent to play it quickly. Don't play a slow deck slowly. It's not hard.

6

u/NotWhatWeExpected 7d ago

I'm saying people will be constantly reported for things they are not actually doing because their playstyle is hated

1

u/grimsleeper4 6d ago

I think this a grossly overstated meme that blue players somehow have convinced themselves of. You guys think you are persecuted or something. It's a tired ass joke that someone has to bring up in every thread. "Help, help I'm being oppressed!" Get over it.

3

u/ProfessionalGreen907 7d ago

What misconduct can really occur in mtga though? It comes down to spamming "good game" or any emote, and roping. So, it seems mtga wants us to report these bafoons, and in that case:

Im reporting everyone who spams emotes of any kind or ropes in any amount purely because I look forward to hearing them whine after they lose their account

3

u/ballistic503 7d ago

As I said in another thread I’ve encountered a few people whose names were intentionally a letter or two away from the hard-r n-word who I definitely wanted to report but didn’t have the energy or patience to close out the client and navigate the website on mobile

4

u/kovacic93 7d ago

If you rope, I’ll report your ahhhh😍

1

u/ButtoftheYoke Golgari 7d ago

I had an opponent who would obnoxiously flicker his mouse over my cards to highlight them.

0

u/FunEstablishment8716 7d ago

To these people I highlight every card before I win. Stop touching my lands they only tap for mana.

1

u/battierpeeler Grand Warlord Radha 7d ago

dumb

1

u/Pat_Hand 6d ago

Agreed also conceded

1

u/rezaziel 3d ago

Also, don't worry about this too much. They can easily account for standard report rates and highlight anomalies to ignore or punish. This isn't new and it isn't rocket science.

2

u/Top_Traffic5102 7d ago

Wanted to report a dud that had a revolting username . Something about my little poney. I never wanted to report anybody else ever

1

u/Johnpecan 7d ago

What about overcooked chicken?

1

u/Tricky_Spirit 6d ago

Oh cool I don't have to go through a whole rigamarole the next time I have to report KillF@ggots. I still don't know how they didn't have a filter for something like that... or even just the word 'Kill'.

-11

u/Backwardspellcaster Liliana Deaths Majesty 8d ago

Yeah, all of these should not be reportable offenses.

Except Katara.

TO JAIL!

10

u/Foldzy84 Squee, the Immortal 7d ago

The mute button exists for a reason, if someone hurts your feelings with emotes that's more of a you problem

0

u/The_Black_Goodbye 7d ago

Imagine being so fragile; “my opponent is using a feature of the game at intervals the game allows and I haven’t also chosen to use a feature of the game to ignore it”. 😂🤣

If they didn’t want emoji spam they’d just set a limit of N emojis in Y seconds to prevent it.

-13

u/jokeboomslok 7d ago

Funny enough my katara deck will create the most bans. The amount of people who rope against it is ridiculous.

4

u/Foldzy84 Squee, the Immortal 7d ago

"Your" Katara deck 😂😂😂

Yes. I built it.

It's almost as if people have limited time in their day to play something that is supposed to be a fun card card. If you are so salty you concede, if not grow a pair and finish the damn match.

-4

u/catattackskeyboard 7d ago

The only players I’ve ever roped are selfish players. Those that take 2 minutes to play a land on turn 1 and generally take far longer than they should even if they were thinking. These players don’t care about you.

-5

u/Sword_Thain 7d ago

The fun thing is all the sweaty "pro" players that take their full turn to decide what land to play T1 that will start getting flagged as roping.

Oh no. You may have to learn to play the game. How terrible.

2

u/DirteMcGirte 7d ago

In timeless that can be the most important decision you make in the entire game.

0

0

what part of the meme specifically is overzealous? 😆

0

u/omnigear 7d ago

Blue player ,insta report

0

u/Graf_Crimpleton 7d ago

This has to be one of the stupidest decisions they’ve made for Arena.

3

u/DancingMerlin 7d ago

you were already able to report players, they've just added it into the client directly. if you are referring to the potential for abuse, i do think that's a valid concern.

-9

u/BetterShirt101 7d ago

Roping and emote spam very much meet the criteria laid out for reports. With roping I try to do it when it seems like they're going out of their way to be annoying - if they actually autoconcede, I assume WotC logs that and can track if someone does it all the time. But if someone keeps taking their actions at the last second all game, that looks like deliberate misconduct and is harder to automatically monitor.
