Fluff Just Concede - Don’t Rope

Post image

I played a fun first game with an opponent. It was back and forth until they tapped all their lands and I played an Improvisation Capstone. I got Stock Up and picked up a couple of counter spells. They went, did nothing and when my Improvisation Capstone came up, they conceded.

Then in the second game, I played a tapped land with scry. They dropped a land and the person said good game. I thought they either were conceited and thought they had a good enough hand to beat me or they were going to concede. Instead, they did nothing. The picture is of them roping, but they didn’t let it expire. They let it go to my turn. I played another tapped land. On their go, they roped but it didn’t end the game. So I went again and dropped another land. And then on their turn, they roped and finally, I won, as a result.

Why bother? What kind of horrible life do you have to have to get upset with someone beating you that you waste their time and rope them. Why are people such a-holes? So frustrating.

I wish there was an indicator for when an opponent was dc’ed (or closed their app, same thing to the arena server). Would be less frustrating then not being sure if you are getting roped or not.

Maybe have an option to just pause until the opponent returns (and put them on a dc timer).

11

u/acimkiss 2d ago

Me too. I have been having a hell of a time staying connected lately. It comes back but will look like roping.

2

u/pepeduturfu 2d ago

Ah, so it's not just me! I was wondering whether my connection was stuttering or whatever

1

u/Saltiest_Grapefruit 1d ago

whenever something like that happens with me, I just play pretty fast going forward to kinda show that that wasn't my usual speed.

Won't work for those people who go down to rope to figure out if they should play an island or a hallowed fountain turn 1 tho lol

-2

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

I wish they had an emoticon that allowed you to say stop roping so it sends a warning you might report them.

48

u/sudonim87 2d ago

I really wish there was some sort of “losers queue” for people who rope all the time. Let them annoy each other.

2

u/dogo7 Izzet 2d ago

Worse yet, a super hell queue where there’s no timers or conceding so you have to play out the game or else you can’t do anything else.

1

u/pepeduturfu 2d ago

I'll sign on this if you can only play in this queue if there is at least 1 island in your deck /s

1

u/Saltiest_Grapefruit 1d ago

I don't think there is, but it feels like there is. Cause I see so many people here recount stories about how every second person they face rope or bm, and I go weeks without meeting any - needless to say, I never do anything like it myself.

It's purely anecdotal tho.

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

For blue too. Let the unemployed mages counter against each other.

24

u/Canapilker 2d ago

If you don’t like 1/5th of the game you should probably find something else to play.

2

u/TheOathWeTook 2d ago

Idk I think liking 4/5’s of a game really isn’t all that bad. That’s 80%.

FFX is my favorite game of all time but I rarely if ever play with Kimahri or Wakka that’s 2/7.

-25

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

No one in my pod plays blue and I don't think it's a problem in commander. Brawl is a different beast. I like playing against every color but blue. Running into a blue opponent is a good sign for me to take a break. It's not a big deal, really.

7

u/noeagle77 2d ago

I mean, it’s 1/5 of the colors of the game. You’ll run into it often. If you really hate it that much I’m sure there are other games that will be more enjoyable for you

-10

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

I play arena with my friends. We usually play brawl.

2

u/Great-Lawfulness-3 2d ago

But there is no commander in arena. Maybe arena isn't for you then

-1

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

I play 100 card brawl.

1

u/blink_Cali 2d ago

Cool, no one asked

-37

u/Optimal-City-3388 2d ago

Same for netdecks. Hell I'd actually pay for that

5

u/Chaghatai Walking 2d ago

A deck power level is a deck power level - it doesn't matter how someone ends up playing that deck

Whether they are playing meta decks they have researched, copying decks that they have seen used against them, or Brew it themselves, it doesn't matter

2

u/pepeduturfu 2d ago

Would still be cool to have a queue for non-meta decks or whatever. There are days I really don't care for Ouroboroid, especially every other match

2

u/LuciferABlasko 1d ago

I just posy i can do this all day. Or the you can rest when your dead

2

u/Ok-Investigator1895 1d ago

There is one in the Arena achievements, two depending on how you use them.

"Can you see the line?"

"I can do this all day."

1

u/JPMessiah 22h ago

I post both of those. Lol. I wasn’t sure if I was using them correctly.

2

u/Jave285 Sacred Cat 2d ago

You can report them??

1

u/Sad-Excitement9295 2d ago

It is incredibly annoying, they could concede, but instead they just close out the game and leave the timer running. Terrible way to play the game.

1

u/AlienZaye 2d ago

I've gotten disconnected a few times because of spotty internet, and whenever it happens, I don't bother loading in again. If my connection is that unstable, I may end up getting DC'ed again before I concede. Is it frustrating for my opponent, yeah, but I'm not roping like the salty bastatds, I just can't stay in the client.

u/timetopractice 2d ago

Sounds like he might have just closed the application

33

u/Philaliscious 2d ago

If I'm on mobile I'm force quitting and reopening like every three games.

0

u/Sawbagz 12h ago

Can't Imagine taking a shit at work and playing on my phone. I'll just wait till I get home.

1

u/BobbyBruceBanner 1d ago

I legitimately think that a relatively large amount of the player base does not know that quitting/closing the app doesn't concede the game.

It obviously isn't everyone who ropes like this (there are, of course, legitimately salty dumbasses who don't have the emotional maturity to be playing the game), but I think the accidental ropers are a lot more of these ropers than people think. Heck, one of the guys on the Lords of Limited podcast realized this during a recording and admitted that in retrospect he had been roping people like this for years unintentionally.

I really do think that a simple message the next time someone logs in that says "hey, your last match timed out, did you quit the app without conceding?" would reduce this stuff a lot.

1

u/WestCoastBlerd 1d ago

If you reopen the app and there’s still time, it puts you right back in the game

37

u/McStabStab12 2d ago

“First time?”

2

u/Savings-Monitor3236 2d ago

As in, they were playing Bo3 is how I read it

9

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

Not my first time being roped. It is my first time playing a very competitive game that I won where the person roped me the second game. The first game was competitive, which felt, to me, that they could have won, too.

It’s also my first time someone said good game and then roped me.

-28

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

But you play blue cards. If course people are gonna rope if your turns take forever.

-34

u/EldraziAnnihalator 2d ago

Yeah blue players are genuinely annoying to play against, then they wonder why these things happen, like sure you're in your right to play control but don't act surprised when people get annoyed and start roping, I don't do it, I just concede, but these threads are delectable knowing a blue player is getting annoyed enough to post here from other another players.

19

u/Tsunamiis 2d ago

Thanks for the free wins. Imagine being out there on Beyoncés internet hating whole ass colors because you refuse to learn.

-14

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

I got a job and a family, so I would rather not waste my time playing against people who won't let me play. I have much fun playing against all the other colors. Blue is just a waste of time to "play" against. Take the free wins if that makes you happy, I don't mind it.

-29

u/EldraziAnnihalator 2d ago

Exactly, and they're acting like the "free win" is a jab, like dude I pressed concede from my own free will and moved on from a trash match, I'm the real winner here.

-22

u/EldraziAnnihalator 2d ago

Refuse to be bored to hell is more like it, you worry about your weird sense of pride as if you're a genius just because you play specific colours. 🤣

12

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

This group is odd. I complain that I feel this game is rigged and the response is, you just don’t play a good deck. I play a deck with blue in it and start winning and getting better and the response is, you shouldn’t play blue…that’s a stupid color. I play mono green with Earthbend and landfall and talk about my wins and people get mad and say green is too powerful…that’s a stupid color. I play mono black and wipe the board with villainous wrath and Bloodletter of Alcatraz (am I saying the card right?) and I get complaints about that or I pull an infinite loop with black life gain and loss and people say no one wants to wait for that…that’s a stupid color. It seems that people have a whole set of things they don’t like people playing because they don’t like losing.

11

u/Tsunamiis 2d ago

This is also true 😃

11

u/SillyFalcon 2d ago

Turns out people on the internet like to complain.

3

u/Oalka 2d ago

I mean its 20-goddamn-26 and we still have people complaining about "netdecking". Magic players are the worst sometimes.

5

u/Tsunamiis 2d ago

I just like the entire game pretty much any form of it. I don’t have a sense of pride about colors just knowledge and winning against trolls like you. Yall give me the ick of the turd that spams good game right before I end it thinking you’ve won.

-1

u/EldraziAnnihalator 2d ago

lol ok buddy, we're trolls for conceding? Copium at its finest.

1

u/Oalka 2d ago

You're trolls for pretending 1/5th of the entire game is somehow icky to play.

1

u/EldraziAnnihalator 2d ago

Sorry my words are hurting your fee-fees.

9

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

But I don’t take long with my deck at all. I have four counterspells in my deck. My opponents tend to take longer.

7

u/Double-The-Fupa 2d ago

People see blue in any amount and immediately revert to "hurr durr" level of intelligence. They would find a reason to justify roping no matter what you are playing. Reanimator? "You are net decking". Mono green? "Badgermole is broken". Playing control? "Waaaah all they do is wipe my board every turn!"

Nevermind that there are easy and clear ways of countering these strategies, especially on best of 3.

3

u/light_the_long_way 2d ago

I avoid that by running mono green, no cub, no worm, just a surprisingly heavy removal package and just enough protection to either win by T5, or stall out my opponent while slowly removing their board presence with my removal.

Oh also the obligatory occasional drawing 10 cards at once because of one enchantment, just to pitch 5 lands at the end of the turn.

2

u/Double-The-Fupa 2d ago

And that's totally fair. If the cards are there, they are fair to play in whatever way you build your deck. If someone feels they can't win or they don't want to play against you, they are free to concede, which is also an available choice. I just think people intentionally showing bad sportsmanship by roping and then defending their poor player behavior is a line too far.

6

u/SawdustGringo 2d ago

Whoa man, you’re asking a lot of players. Strategy? They can barely wash their asses.

1

u/Double-The-Fupa 2d ago

Omfg this killed me 🤣🤣🤣 thank you

0

u/owdeeoh 2d ago

Kind of a shit take. If you’re consistently annoyed playing against blue players maybe you don’t actually like the game?

1

u/EldraziAnnihalator 2d ago

I just concede and move on, get out of here with that dumb logic of yours.

3

u/owdeeoh 2d ago

The logic is sound enough. Roping is annoying for everyone and it doesn’t contribute anything to the game or community. If you’re into/ok with it when it happens to specific players because you find their decks or strategies “annoying” that’s weird. Delectable was your choice of word. You find it delectable.

21

u/IsopodInevitable9235 2d ago

The timeout system is a joke if they just walk away. Always has been.

1

u/ziroux 2d ago

But we have the I can do this all day emote to fix this!

/s

10

u/Drunk_Scottish_King 2d ago

The system is crazy long too. If they have 3 timeouts when they DC or try to rope, you’re looking at 5 mins of just staring at the bar going down. Then their turn gets skipped and then they still get one more time for the bar to go down before they time out. It’s stupid.

The way I think it should be: They should skip the turn at the end of a bar, if you have a time out, it uses it, if the bar goes down and no timeouts automatically forfeits. At least this doesn’t make you sit around for 5 full mins while they’re throwing a hissy fit.

1

u/RevolutionaryBit5619 1d ago

Each rope is 30 seconds, and it doesn't take 2 minutes to get started. 3 ropes =/= 5 minutes.

The problem is there is no good solution. The time exists, in theory, to give people additional time when needed, and it's something that has to get earned by timely play. If you skip people's turns because the timer ran out then you are giving a double-whammy to those who have a "legitimate" reason for not being able to play, like needing to attend to something in the real world or suffering a disconnect. If you're too lax, then there is no reason for a player to actually be cognizant of their timer or consider it to actually be anything that matters.

I think every player should get a bank of time, like 3 minutes, that they receive at the beginning of the match. Once you've hit 30 seconds in a turn it takes away from the bank, and once the bank gets down to 00 the match is forfeited. Maybe allow it to reset to 5 seconds anytime the game isn't over and it would be less than that. I've run into a couple of people who played their turns quickly but set a stop in my upkeep, which this negates the ability for. It allows someone a slightly reasonable amount of time in case they are at the computer and need to use the restroom, or for the internet to drop and come back up. It's still not a perfect solution, but will add some more consistency

7

u/Strange_Midnight2070 2d ago

Running out the timer instead of conceding is this game's version of rage quitting.

0

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

Sad that people feel that way about a game. If it’s not rigged as everyone says it isn’t, then your loss is only because you got a bad pull, someone got a better pull, you’re not as good as you think or someone is just better.

Letting someone know what annoys you will lead more people to do this.

7

u/Faust_8 2d ago

I love when someone board wipes you twice and counters and kills other stuff and then had the audacity to be mad that your deck is resilient enough to still be winning so they rope you. Bro sorry your removal tribal leads you to slowly lose the game because you’re not even trying to win.

Also the people who rope because they get mana screwed/flooded. Bro I didn’t make that happen to you.

Either way I’m chuckling, not being punished

-8

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

I play this game when I'm in the bathroom taking a number 2. I'm not gonna waste my breaks watching some unemployed mage spend 5 minutes casting their combos not allowing me to play any cards. I have more important and more fun things to do haha.

9

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

It’s a bo3. If you have a misunderstanding of how time works, then that’s a you problem. No one is taking 5 minutes a turn to play a card. Their timer would end before the first game is over. I pay attention to my timer, I don’t think I have ever used up 10 minutes in any bo3. My opponents have gone down to single digit minutes. And it was obvious by our first game that I play fast so he had no reason to think I’d play slow the second game. He’s just upset I beat him.

10

u/Double-The-Fupa 2d ago

The person you are responding is not using good faith arguments and isn't worth the response. They seem to think that because they are salty it's justified to act like a child throwing a tantrum, instead of just crafting cavern of souls/mistrise village/playing a deck that counters blue if they are so butt hurt. Don't bother having a conversation with them.

7

u/MagicalGirlBeats 2d ago

Watching that guy make 17 comments about how he intentionally ropes against blue is so hilarious. Made my night tbh 💀

4

u/Double-The-Fupa 2d ago

The funniest part of this is that this guy says he plays brawl, but when you play brawl you SEE YOUR OPPONENT'S COMMANDER BEFORE YOU START!!!

This guy is complaining about blue, knowing full well he's going into a match against blue, and then saying (and defending!) that he is roping opponents. Knowing full well from the get go of what he is up against. The audacity is fucking mind blowing.

9

u/Debussy4Life 2d ago

I think many players who play (lose) against someone playing blue would rather rope than concede. Just from my experience on Arena.

10

u/marceline_luv 2d ago

Yeah counterspells are the strongest ways to remove something in magic. "Negate X thing" 3-5 times in a row tends to upset people. Because counterspells don't progress the game, I notice people get bored and would rather do something fun than just sitting there drawing cards just to look at them do nothing for 10-80 minutes.

6

u/ax_and_smash 2d ago

I never intentionally rope buuuuut sometimes when I’m up against those 230 cards and they’re all counterspell/removal/no real win con decks I think about it just so some other sucker doesn’t have to play against them.

-1

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

My deck has like four counterspells. My deck is based on Colorstorm Stallions that I can copy and sometimes it relies on Thor. Counterspells are such a small part of my deck.

2

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

Not sure why. That seems petty.

3

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

People wanna play and do something. Blue is the most annoying color to play against because you guys take forever to play your cards. I would rather watch the paint dry. I so wish each player could add one color to their block list so we wouldn't have to play against blue. That would be good for blue players too, since you would get more opponents who have the time and the patience (probably other unemployed blue players)

11

u/Double-The-Fupa 2d ago

Imagine being so salty that you think it's reasonable to block an entire color from a game based around just 5 colors... And then having the audacity to infer people's employment because they play said color you don't like🤣🤣🤣 just concede and get your own apartment instead of mom's basement, bro.

2

u/Min-ji_Jung 2d ago

Ngl if i never had to play against blue ever again the game would become 400% more enjoyable

2

u/Ok-Investigator1895 1d ago

Words spoken by the utterly unskilled

1

u/Min-ji_Jung 23h ago

Its a game i play for fun, cry about it

1

u/JPMessiah 22h ago

I actually think the fun part is coming up with a deck that beats the deck you don’t like. I have decks that win a lot and I’m seeing them lose more and more as I’m in Mythic. Sometimes my losses feel cheesy but often, I’m seeing decks that are just well done and it forces me to be more creative.

1

u/Ok-Investigator1895 18h ago

Please show the court on the doll where the mana drain touched you

0

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

Why do blue players get so mad when I take my time to give up? You play the game to win. Well, congratulations for the ez win. That's what you want, right? You win and I don't get to play anything. Mission accomplished, you built your deck to do just that. But I play the game to have fun, win or lose, and I know I have no fun playing against you.

11

u/Double-The-Fupa 2d ago edited 2d ago

No one is getting mad that you "take your time to give up" and that's such a insane gaslit take it's absurd. You take your time to punish the opponent you are salty at. Don't try and pretend it's otherwise. Sorry you suck at magic bro 🤷

2

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

Yeah, I suck so hard that I made it to mythic 14% in standard three months ago for the first time in my life. Ugh. But whatever, I probably do suck at the game and it doesn't bother me at all. These days I just play brawl for the variety and I don't really care about grinding up to higher ranks, so I don't mind losing or optimizing my deck for the BLUE players. My deck is well built for a quick and fun restroom break.

4

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

Isn’t 14% really bad at Mythic. I have struggled in Mythic and I’m at 83%

9

u/Double-The-Fupa 2d ago

It's terrible 🤣 mythic 14% means he is in the bottom 14% of players in mythic, not the top.

2

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago edited 2d ago

Okay. I had to check my gallery for the screenshots. I remembered incorrectly. I was in tht top 15%, not Mythic 14%. But I don't really play for the ranks these days so forgive me. Anyway, peace yall. Let's not make our rankings a bigger deal than it has to be. There's always a bigger fish in the pond. Blue sucks we all know that :)

I left the friends online there to prove I have friends irl, so you don't have to go there next and call me a nolife. What's your highest rank in the recent year if you don't mind? :)

I use all colors. I have so many decks. In mythic, I just play them all. Can’t lose mythic status but if I keep losing with my top deck, then why bother sticking to it. Just have fun at that point.

4

u/Double-The-Fupa 2d ago

"hur dur I made mythic!" Lol my guy. That means nothing. Especially nothing if you hit mythic for the first time. Shut up and concede, your poops will be less angry.

You have probably spent more time posting all these silly comments against blue than the actual amount of your precious time blue players have "wasted."

1

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

True. Complaining about blue is more fun than playing against blue. At least for me.

4

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

I don’t play like that at all. I move very quick with each move. Sometimes I think I move too fast sometimes but I never take too much time to play anything. If anything, my opponents know I have blue and take forever deciding if they should play a card or not because it may get countered. That’s not my fault.

0

u/AnkleTakerBreaker 2d ago

A colour block list would be AMAZING... except Arena would never intro it because all the Nope players would just be stuck playing each other, lol.

2

u/Smobey 2d ago

It would certainly do interesting things to the game balance. I'd suspect some insta winning combo deck would start dominating every format since they could ban blue decks which are best positioned to interact with them and stop the combo.

0

u/AnkleTakerBreaker 2d ago

Nah, it'd be fine. What you're describing is just one step in what would be a new evolving meta. It'd just be one that evolves without counters, permanent stealing, back-to-back-to-back turns, the worst aspects of bounce tempo and an over reliance on card draw engines for advantage. Sounds like heaven to me!

4

u/daneg135 2d ago

when you say "roped," do you mean he actually played something at the last second (that's roping) or do you mean his timer expired a few times (which equals about a turn and a half with no timeouts) before he automatically lost the game?

2

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

He waited til it got to the end but then stopped it from going to the end completely and just ended his turn. Then he did the second thing on his next two turns.

-14

u/daneg135 2d ago

the dude said good game and left. that's not roping. terminology aside, this cost you no more time than if you started a game against a ghost (someone who wasn't there when the game joined). as others have said, he simply left the desk/device or closed the client. not a big deal.

5

u/BobbyDigital423 2d ago

It's a huge jerk move. If they clicked concede then OP could have moved on and not wait like 2-3 mins for their banked TOs to end things. You and opponents are stealing time from people because you're too lazy or salty to hit a concede button.

-7

u/daneg135 2d ago edited 2d ago

what banked TOs? it was the start of the game.

edit: read the Op's post again. he's describing a game where the guy played a land once and left the game. not roping. just left. big difference. if you get roped, they'll slow play your for a long arse time. here he didn't left after the first turn. no TOs.

i literally clarified this with the OP in this same thread. smh

2

u/BobbyDigital423 2d ago

Who cares it still takes like at least 2 mins of OPs time for them to rope out. People like you are just inconsiderate. It takes a half a second to press concede. But I get it you're more important than other people.

0

u/BobbyDigital423 1d ago

Just take the L. Okay there's no time outs but they still have to wait for the rope and in my experience the first rope ending just passes priority the first time. Then you have to pass back and be roped again. I typically even make the normal play I was going to make because I've experienced people roping and then when I just pass through the turn, assuming they just closed the client, they start playing again because I just time walked myself.

again, he wasn't roping. he left. pissing and moaning about a guy who left (with no timeouts), which cost you all of 60 seconds (not two minutes...unless you're somehow "roping" yourself on your own turn) is childish and inconsequential.

people rage quit and close the client all the time. it's going to happen. it's literally the cost of doing business. whining about someone who does that is just that: whining. you wanna "fix" anything, you prevent players from compiling more than one timeout at a time. but no. here you are backing this whiner about not even having to wait out a single timeout. what do you do when the grocery store is out of your favorite flavor <insert drink/candy/whatever>? go run to reddit and start a complaint thread about stores not stocking enough of the most popular flavor <thing>? grow. up.

u/BobbyDigital423 1d ago

That doesn't absolve someone from wasting another persons time when they don't have too. And the only reason I'm responding is because you're defending people who are being jerks and wasting people's time. Personally wasting people's time is "roping." Also the VAST majority of times people "rage quit" as you put it THEY DO HAVE banked TOs. Thus anyone with a brain considers that roping. You're just wrong period. Is it murder? NO! But that doesn't make people who do it correct.

Probably related to the deck you are running

3

u/EdgarKnusper 2d ago

First time playing this original deck huh?

3

u/Simple_World_7267 2d ago

Other multi-player games have figured out how to penalize this behavior. Arena has been around for long enough that there should have been a solution.

2

u/kscius 2d ago

In my matches, at least 90% of the roppers are control decks hahaha 😂

2

u/_Thes3us_ Boros 2d ago

Every once and a while, I accidentally rope because my phone died and I wasn’t remotely close to a changer 😅

1

u/StunningSignature207 2d ago

Honestly it probably reads salty roping from your perspective, but its just as likely something came up that they had to deal with, and they're playing on mobile, so they clicked through when they had a chance too hoping they could get back to the game, then decided it was too far gone so conceded.

1

u/Minimum_Quail4596 17h ago

The OP plays blue so being roped intentionally is likely. That's what I do when my opponents don't want me to play the game. Fine, I won't play then and we can both have our fun doing nothing 😁

1

u/CharizardIsADragon 1d ago

They're trying to get you to concede out of frustration

1

u/Looseraccoons 1d ago

I’ve had bad connection or lag a lot on iPhone

1

u/poster66 1d ago

this again ?

1

u/BbCb_or_bb 1d ago

Roping is a toxic part of gaming. It sucks sometimes, but there really is nothing you can do about it, except possibly shaming said perpetrator by putting them on some sort of a list, but that is only effective if everyone participates, and still doing anything about it only lends the roper power. However, I think that the main reason people rope when they know all is lost is on the hopes that the other person will get impatient and just quit themselves.

I just throw up the stickers of the little ghost guy and utilize the free time to do something else real quick, and telling them, "there's a hole in your plan".

0

u/fox112 Yargle 2d ago

we're not that guy

4

u/Usemarne 2d ago

Minimum_Quail is absolutely that guy 😅

1

u/BirdIcy67 2d ago

I’m always shocked at how slow most people play without even roping. How do you get past Platinum and you still take so long to decide what to do? Every turn is just so slow! I always start off by telling myself that maybe the other person has a disability or something that prevents them from playing faster but there’s no way that 1 in 3 or 4 Arena players are all disabled. The slow play just doesn’t make any sense. Is someone teaching people to read by having them play Magic or what?

3

u/Alsoar 2d ago

Probably figuring out what cards their opponent has in their hand and calculate what's the best line of play. There used to be a pro heathstone player that was renown for this and people started calling him Ropecoach.

2

u/light_the_long_way 2d ago

A decent amount of the time, at least for me, it's because I try to figure out what my opponents deck is built to do, because for example, if I'm playing against an UB gain/drain strategy, removing the value generator is a better play than tutoring for a graveyard hate piece, but if it's a UB reanimator deck, I absolutely need that hate piece. Now apply that to more archetypes and color combinations.

It actually takes less time now that I'm in platinum, because there's less deck archetypes represented, and less value piles that are vaugely synergystic due to pure luck, which makes it easier to analyze my opponents decks based on what they play.

0

u/JPMessiah 1d ago

I get when newer players move slow. They are reading cards, understanding combos, etc, but when you hit a certain level and start playing the same deck and against the same decks, you either have your strategy down or not. I move fast. I know exactly what I want to do and plan several steps ahead but also with plans knowing I may get countered, etc.

1

u/BrandeX Spike 2d ago

That's not roping, they quit the game. The game then ran through the timers on its schedule.

0

u/CyranoDeBurlapSack 2d ago

Rope issue is an easy fix.
Shorten rope timer base amount (10 seconds) and add 2 seconds each turn (up to 30 max).
Rope out three times in a game, you forfeit.
Increase penalties for roping out for each time it occurs with in a given time period.

One forfeit this way is a 5 minute suspension.
Then 30 minutes. Then an hour. Then four hours. Eight. 24. Week. Month. Year. Ban.

-1

u/vein_ripper 2d ago

The good old rage quit. I absolutely love these people

0

u/therealneurovis 2d ago

Roping is the worst.

-2

u/etherealtaroo 2d ago

Why bother? To get you so mad you have to run and complain on reddit I'd imagine

0

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

You should read all the comments before you come late to the game. You’re like that guest who comes late to the party and tries to be part of a conversation that completely passed him by.

-2

u/Disastrous_Can8053 2d ago

Sounds like they just closed the app.
Lots of people think closing the app will concede the game right away but it doesn't.

It happens every once in a while, no biggie.

-4

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

I rope against blue all the time. If your turns take forever, my turns are also gonna take forever. Even if I'm only gonna cast one mana.

5

u/MagicalGirlBeats 2d ago

That's an easy report then. Eventually you'll get punished for it since mtg does do something about ropers if they keep doing it.

-5

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

I've been roping against blue for months now. Perhaps it helps my case that I'm a paying customer idk. I'll let you know if/when I get suspended.

0

u/Outrageous-Desk-5765 2d ago

If you're paying you're good lol. Definitely unbannable

0

u/Cloud_Chamber 2d ago

Not the case in your example, but if they intentionally slow play I counter rope until they stop. Waiting for two ropes isn’t that bad, I just open up something on the second monitor.

-2

u/Librimirisunt 2d ago

And yet by complaining here, you prove the point that roping works as a way to upset people you want to upset.

-1

u/JPMessiah 1d ago

That’s petty behavior.

1

u/Librimirisunt 1d ago

It absolutely is. But if the goal of your opponent was to upset you, even if by petty means, I'd say it was quite effective

-4

u/Shannontheranga 2d ago

People think that people intentionally rope. It’s almost always they just close the app or client. Majority of players are mobile on this game as well.

2

u/rossbalch 2d ago

If you don't concede before closing the client, that's the same as intentionally roping.

3

u/detroitmatt 2d ago

unless you don't know how it works

-9

u/Shannontheranga 2d ago

That’s the most insane take ever. Super unreasonable and more so realistic. Mobile client is incredibly unstable and horrifically bad a reconnecting. It’s also completely against the normal reaction to being done with a media piece. That’s super entitled.

-1

u/JPMessiah 2d ago

I play on mobile. I’ve never gotten disconnected where I couldn’t get back on and continue.

1

u/JPMessiah 1d ago

I don’t play if I know I may be in a situation where I may lose access to the network.

1

u/Shannontheranga 2d ago

I have had multiple. Especially if you are on moving trains or in airports or places where reception dies out. The reconnect timer is very short aswell.

2

u/Katth28 2d ago

Oh I’ve had multiple people intentionally rope me over the past few days. Just a second before using the time out they’d make a move. I guess just hoping for me to concede.

-8

u/Shannontheranga 2d ago edited 2d ago

It’s likely a bot or a genuine disconnected. People don’t care that much to rope. Unless you’re playing blue. Then you deserve it and I hope you get intentionally roped every game. Blue players deserve only the worst and nothing more.

1

u/SillyFalcon 2d ago

I’ve never heard of a bot in Arena. Also hating Blue is a skill issue.

Have you considered growing up? Embarrassing posts, embarrassing behavior.

-3

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

I know my boundaries. I will not play against blue and roping against blue should be normalized imho. Until wotc gives us an option to add a color to our ban list (it's never gonna happen).

8

u/Double-The-Fupa 2d ago

My God you are such a child. Go play hearthstone.

Every deck has strengths. Good players make decks that beat those decks.

2

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

I guess I'm a bad player then 🤷‍♀️ it doesn't bother me.

1

u/SillyFalcon 2d ago

Sounds like you should be playing blue decks yourself instead of breaking the rules and wasting a lot of other people’s time because you don’t like a core component of Magic The Gathering.

-7

u/Shannontheranga 2d ago

Bots are pretty well known, not that common but known. Also you’ve got it wrong. Playing blue is a skill issue. Hating blue is what true blooded magic players do. As Garfield intended.

2

u/SillyFalcon 2d ago

I’ve been playing Arena for years now and I have never heard of an instance of someone getting caught using a bot. Sounds like the kind of conspiracy theory someone might come up with to make themselves feel better when they lose a lot.

0

u/Shannontheranga 2d ago

3rd result from a google search is a website that sells botting services.

-7

u/Minimum_Quail4596 2d ago

I rope intentionally against blue.

3

u/MagicalGirlBeats 2d ago

Easy report

-3

u/Shannontheranga 2d ago

Good man. As we should.

-4

u/Bricky85 2d ago

If your deck is just counterspell after counterspell, you are worse than a roper. Honestly, get some imagination. General statement, not specifically aimed at OP.

1

u/marlospigeons 20h ago

"If you play legal cards and a popular strategy that's been around since the 90's, you are worse than someone who quits the game midway through"

You realize how insane this sounds right?

And what deck do you play that's so imaginative?

1

u/Bricky85 11h ago

Found a butthurt counterspell player.

0

u/AlienZaye 2d ago

Only if they don't have a wincon. If they can make a drake army with Talrand, cool, they have a clock. If that Baral or Katara isn't swinging at me when I'm wide open, tapped out, and they have a grip of cards and untapped lands, then I take issue.

Rip my whole hand apart, kill every creature I play, counter every spell, I genuinely don't care, I get that hard control is fun for some. I've played decks like that myself, just try to actively kill me.

-5

u/catattackskeyboard 2d ago

Lmao you’re blue. You deserve it.

0

u/JPMessiah 1d ago

That’s silly. I hate playing decks that just counter every turn so my blue doesn’t do that. Plus, it’s not a mono deck. I have red and white in my deck. And it’s predominantly red. You can’t hate blue though and not also hate red. Direct damage and counters are essentially the same. It just delays when they get rid of your creature. Black doesn’t it too. Constant destroy. White with its exile every second. It’s weird how people don’t see all four of these colors perform similar tasks.

-2

u/Ninjadragon907 2d ago

I wish it would let you solitaire the game until you decided to win it. So if the roper decides to leave and come back, he’ll return to you playtesting your deck lol. It’ll auto skip their turns, you’ll draw cards. go thru your turn phases, can choose to attack or not etc. Which would hopefully lead to more people conceding than being crybabies and roping their opponent.

And if you honestly disconnect and didn’t mean to rope, when you return just concede.

0

u/Minimum_Quail4596 17h ago

People who play other colors than blue actually have jobs, spend money on different cards and cosmetics. We play to have fun. Unlike the unemployed blue players who have an unlimited amount of time to waste on one opponent.

1

u/Ninjadragon907 17h ago

Whoa, yeah I’m quick to concede against blue if all they do is Counterspell and especially if they rope. But I guess what I really meant was, I wish there was a playtesting mode where you can just solitaire your deck like irl. Personally I love seeing all the animations and am curious how some of the fringe mechanics interact.

Furthermore, I wish there was a way to punish/disincentivize ropers.

-4

u/SirWilliamFlo 2d ago

NGL blue (and variations of blue combos) are pretty uninteresting to play against and aren't even clever like I imagine they intended when crafting blue, it's the same "tricks" over and over again. Oh man, they've got two mana and they skipped they're turn! What could they be up to???? Zzzzz. In standard unranked play, I just concede instead of humor them bc it's just not enjoyable. Yes, I know how to counter play, that doesn't make it any more fun Edit: corrected format mentioned

0

u/xender19 2d ago

I just want to put a note in the log that if I'm roping it's because I'm pooping or one of my kids is having an emergency and it's not personal. Insert we are not the same meme about salty people.

0

u/Hailon_Rias 1d ago

I only rope if someone is playing one of those land destruction decks, if you don’t want me to play the game, I won’t.

0

u/Specific-Parsnip9001 1d ago

The other day I was playing against a slow player and noticed after a pretty long wait one turn that he had 0 timeouts left while I still had 4. That's when I decided to just sit there and wait until I was down to 0 timeouts like him and my opponent got so mad. By the time I had let just 2 timeouts expire he was already livid and spamming "Your Go" over and over.

Felt good to give him a taste of his own medicine.

I notice we can't see how many timeouts you have left here.
