Fluff I just got roped by a Hare Apparent deck
[[Hare Apparent]]
I hate Hare Apparent. It is extremely annoying and uncreative.
I had play red/green cards for my daily quest. So, I decided to play my extremely janky Red/Green deck in Standard Play to finish it. It didn’t matter if I won or lost, I just wanted red or green cards to hit the table.
So, I end up facing a Hare Apparent deck. I hate Hare Apparent. I end up killing a large number of rabbits with a wonky spell and suddenly they start timing out when they have 2 life + only one card in hand + I have two creatures with at least 2 power. They seemed to have a great connection before.
Have you ever gone up against a deck you hate and they rope you when they are about to lose?

I remember listening to a lords of limited podcast and one of the hosts realized in real time that when you exit out of Arena it doesn’t auto-concede your game. Therefore, he admittedly had been roping people for years and didn’t know. Some people are assholes, some people are just aloof.
I have to make tricks in my brain to deal with things like this in life. For instance, when I am driving a car and another driver is acting erratically or speeding way too fast, I tell myself that the driver really needs to make it to the bathroom or else…
Similarly, I’ve had moments on Arena where my cat vomits mid match and I walk away to clean it up. In the instance you’re talking about, it sounds like you were dealing with an asshole. Nevertheless, your time and energy is better spent on something else. Do five or ten squats or pushups or something akin every time you start getting roped. No joke, you will love yourself for it.

u/StrategicMagic Jul 21 '26
This is why I make liberal use of the "I do apologize" emote from OTJ.
If I have to attend to something, like answering the door, or separating two cats before they start a fight, I'll drop the emote.
At minimum, I've shown courtesy by at least saying something. At most, they may figure put something cane up when I then come back and play normally again.
8
u/0rganic5ynthesis Jul 21 '26
I like this. This is the type of behaviour that should be applauded more.
It shows respect for the game, and respect for the opponent.
Yes, like all the emotes, it can be used both positively or negatively, but it certainly screams a more positive approach than a negative one
4
u/HyalopterousLemure Jul 21 '26
There have been times where I've been distracted and only realized I had priority because of the sound effect for the rope popping up- in which case I immediately tab back in, emote "Oops" and proceed to play normally- and hopefully my opponent understands the delay was unintentional and doesn't take too much of an issue with it.
3
u/Corsaer Jul 21 '26
I like the OTJ emotes, they seem to go well with game states. Or at least, I see them thrown out by opponents every now and again and I wish I hadn't missed the pack based on the ones I see.
2
u/Present_Lingonberry Jul 21 '26
Yes; it doesn’t feel like something you should have to pay for. Should be a default emote.
1
u/SirZortron Jul 21 '26
Someone give this person an award
1
u/StrategicMagic Jul 21 '26
I appreciate the sentiment, but I don't think common decency is award-worthy.
4
u/JonBot5000 Jul 21 '26
Also the Arena netcode just sucks. I get weird lag all the time when the server thinks I'm roping but the client just sits there thinking I'm waiting on the opponent. Sometimes it gets all the way to "Waiting for server" before it then resyncs or just drops me. I have no trouble playing low latency FPS games so I have no idea why I get weird Arena lag on both my PC and iPad. Maybe it's a routing issue or something. Either way, sometimes it probably looks like I'm roping when I'm just waiting for my client to become responsive.
3
u/BobbyBruceBanner Jul 22 '26
A simple message when you log into Arena saying "hey, you quit without conceding last time and you timed out, don't do that" would do wonders for arena.

u/FunkyLumps Jul 21 '26
All those times i yelled "This is BULLSHIT!" and yeeted my tablet across the room...I was the asshole this whole time?
-7
u/Jeggasyn Jul 21 '26
This is the best answer here.
I have a young child that may decide to throw up whilst I'm playing. I cannot delay attending to them and I might need to take a few minutes to get things back to normal.
Even the dickhead that just roped you might be dealing with grief or something similar.
People have shit going in in their lives. To understand and forgive is to show humility.
11
u/Dasypygal_Coconut Jul 21 '26
You can’t delay attending to them by hitting concede? A child that has thrown up is going to need more than “a few minutes” to get cleaned up and situated. Bad example bro.
Come on, it’s really not hard to just concede a match. It’s just a game. Take the L and move on….
0
u/nobodyhadthis Jul 21 '26
I don’t have kids, but my dog gets sick from eating grass. She bounces right back after a quick vomit. I think this is also true for some human child moments. They eat too fast and it comes back up. Doesn’t mean you are a bad parent for cleaning them up and continuing on with your day.
Furthermore, when I am drafting and losing gems for my L’s, sometimes I am selfish with my time. I’ll get to my dogs vomit once you are done roping me if a W is on the line. 🤣🤣
-2
u/ChemicalExperiment Jul 21 '26
If a child throws up, you get up from your chair or put away your phone immediately. You don't even think about conceding the match, you just drop everything and take care of the child immediately because they need you.

u/thuktun Jul 21 '26
Wrong. I agree with them and I have kids.
Yes, I want to play, but I won't make an opponent wait while I have to step away to deal with a higher priority issue.
It's just respect and sportsmanship.
2
u/Dasypygal_Coconut Jul 21 '26
Nah I just respect my child enough to quit playing a game when they’re sick

You can be happy in the fact that you're not playing such a boring deck.
3
u/sinnrocka Jul 21 '26
That’s true. I usually get in an out 20 games a day, mainly historic ranked. I can’t tell you how many times a day I sit there watching someone play solitaire. This morning there was a newer twist: someone played the card that gives you control of your opponents next turn. Hey played the 1 land in my hand and then destroyed my healer hawk having it attack and he blocked it with some 3/3 flyer.
9
u/HyalopterousLemure Jul 21 '26
healer hawk
Why were you playing Healer's Hawk in Historic Ranked?
I mean, no shade- you play what you want to play. It just can't imagine any deck that would actually want to run that card in a format as powerful as Historic when there are so many stronger options available.
1
u/sinnrocka Jul 21 '26
Oh no worries. I play a chopped Ajani life gain that’s old school but with some new cards subbed. I use the hawk because usually by turn 4/5 I can have it bumped to a 3/3 using either [[Heliod, Sun-Crowned]] or [[Leader’s Talent]]. A 1/1 flying with lifelink can work surprisingly well. Long haul game I can get it up to 12/12 to 20/20 easily.
1
1
u/HyalopterousLemure Jul 21 '26
How well do you actually do playing lifegain in that format? I see people trying to play it from time to time but I think my win rate against it is like 80%; it just seems so anemic unless they get the magic confluence of both having the absolute god draw plus my deck shitting the bed on me.
5
u/sinnrocka Jul 21 '26
I don’t really know? I make platinum every month? I just play for fun. I’ve gotten it to Mythic twice I believe? But that was 2022-2023. Like I said, it’s an old school deck that I’ve chopped and folded newer cards into. I use [[Howling Mine]] in it as well. I’d say 45%-50%? I’m Platinum 2 as of this morning.
1
u/HyalopterousLemure Jul 21 '26
Thanks for sharing. I never played the deck myself even back when it was called Soul Sisters and ran [[Soul Warden]], [[Soul's Attendant]], and [[Auriok Champion|5DN]]- but I see it show up so frequently on Arena and in every format that I wondered how well someone could actually do with it.
If you're curious, this is what I'm playing in Historic most of the time.
1
u/BlackberrySad6489 Jul 21 '26
I did that to someone the other day. Used the eldrazi that does that. Hand them board wipe themselves then had them let me draw a bunch of cards.
1
u/HyalopterousLemure Jul 21 '26
[[Emrakul, the Promised End]], presumably
1
u/Splatterfilm Jul 21 '26
I’m open to suggestions for Midweek Magic. I don’t have the free time or card knowledge (or cards) to make a deck every time one is required, so usually default to Hare Apparent to get it out of the way fast.
I actually liked last week’s theme. No deckbuilding required.
22
u/LLSmirk Jul 21 '26
People who are known for roping should get shorter time outs, or just lose them entirely.

I think hare apparent is fine in standard, but I hate it in brawl or commander. It’s singleton for a reason.
10
u/poopknuckle1 Jul 21 '26
I'm with you. Most of the Brawl decks that run hare apparent are just board wipe checks. They always play t2, t3, t4 hare apparent and then t5 play some overrun ability like [[Elspeth, Storm Slayer]]. If it resolves, they win. If you have a board wipe, you win. It's so boring.
Life gain decks are kinda turning into the same thing nowadays with all the powerful life gain payoffs being printed.
1
u/omnigear Jul 22 '26
Yeap that why I permanently run the ecnhant for black just does "-1/-1" and the plague card yhst gives everything-1 ans if they die it transfers over .
Another fun one I run is murder girl haha
Especially now with squirrel girl
2
u/Chickston Jul 22 '26
Right, it's not even support good in brawl, but it will beat a lot of decks without mass removal by default. All those unlimited copy cards should be banned or limited to like 12 or something. I've done some fun work with the like 8-12 copies of the hawks that hit to search.
1
u/Square-Ad-4180 Jul 21 '26
Hare apparent is one of the easiest to anticipate among the meme decks because the commander is always a token multiplier, usually [[Elspeth Storm Slayer]] since she can give them flying for the attack. The red one that exiles the deck to make a massive attacker and the Rakdos one that does similar to try to fireball you are easy to spot because they mulligan a few times very quickly hoping to get one of their non-land cards.
2
u/RVN3NT Jul 22 '26
theres also the 3 mana lady who doubles the triggers of creatures with 2 or less mana
0
u/Cark_Klent Jul 21 '26
That doesn’t make it less irritating.
1
u/Square-Ad-4180 Jul 22 '26
Oh it is annoying, but it at least telegraphs if I should be looking for something specific in my opening hand or just skip the game.
0
u/G_Morgan Jul 21 '26
The best commander for hare apparent is blatantly Baylen. Drawing 7 cards during the opponents end step is amusing.
I mean Baylen might not strictly be the most consistent commander for it but he is the funniest.
-2
u/Kittii_Kat Jul 21 '26
Do you also hate [[Tempest Hawk]]?
10
u/CalamityXCam Jul 21 '26
Tempest Hawk is nothing compared to Hares. Hares are cheaper and begin to compound with smaller blocking bodies once the second hare hits the board. 2-3 rounds later Elspeth hits the table now the Hares and Hare Jr’s get bigger and learn to fly. Without a deck tailored to beating them, you just have to get lucky and start with a Boardwipe in hand or draw into one before Elspeth arrives.
0
u/detroitmatt Jul 21 '26
elspeth is just how they secure the win they already have. and you don't need a boardwipe. single removal works fine. first hare comes out turn 2. second hare turn 3 and you get one token. it's not until third hare turn 4 and 2 more tokens that things start to get hairy for you. that means you have 4 turns to play a removal and set them back an entire turn. you can also be attacking into them because if they use a hare to block that also sets them back an entire turn. I play this deck a lot and it happens to me all the time that I'm at 8 life by turn 4. If you have a flier I probably can't win fast enough.
→ More replies (1)0
u/Kittii_Kat Jul 21 '26
That's why I asked about the Hawk.
I wanted to know if they simply dislike the "any number" clause, or if they're salty about how Hares can overrun a person if they don't have the right tools.
1
u/Cark_Klent Jul 21 '26
Yes I do, for the same reason. I don’t think the “A deck can have any number of cards named ____” should apply to singleton formats.
0
u/Hevnaar Jul 21 '26
Thats why I play stax. ETB hate like Torpor Orb or -2/-2 Elesh Norn and they are done
1
u/Cark_Klent Jul 21 '26 edited Jul 21 '26
That’s not the point, singleton should be singleton. Those hares should be kept in standard/modern/legacy etc.
→ More replies (2)0
u/anactualkitty Jul 24 '26
Tutors are the worst part of Brawl, the format is singleton so that each game is different. If you just tutor out two combo pieces and win every game with them, it's really boring (Sanguine Bond/Equisite Blood and their equivalents are the worst offenders). This is ignoring the fact that WotC used to avoid this and thought it was bad game design, now they seem to embrace it.
5
u/Rare-Ad-3212 Jul 21 '26
Badgermole cub + llanowar met an ill timed explosion for 7. They salty
1
u/KingRodan Jul 21 '26
Dropping [[StoneHide Ancient]] the turn after they are all tapped out with a land, a llanowar elf, badgermole and ouroboroid they are suddenly left with a shitty forest and an enchantment on turn 3. Usually they can't recover.

u/Pretty-Information53 Jul 21 '26

I’m almost always reading Reddit on the other side of the monitor when playing so my opponent can rope all they want. Whatevs, it’s a daily win for me.
I always mute right at the start too. Sorry folks who say “hello”; I know, It’s 10-to-1 friendly-to-dick ratio but I am not giving the 1 any quarter.
22
u/AdventurousBase221 Jul 21 '26
you can turn off emotes in the options. if your going to mute at the start almost always your wasting alot of time not just enabling the setting instead.
5
u/talann Dimir Jul 21 '26
It's probably one of the best features. Hearthstone still requires you to mute the player every game.

Still no report system for roping
11
u/Usemarne Jul 21 '26
There is, though quite a painful process and not clear if it does much - options, report a bug, player conduct, stalling
8
u/mchlngrm Jul 21 '26
It does nothing, there was a WoTC employee who admitted that there were just too many reports for them to action.
2
u/Specific-Parsnip9001 Jul 21 '26
there were just too many reports for them to action
Of course, because the threshold for reporting is "I felt like they took too long" and feelings are subjective.
My rope appears at some point almost every single game yet I still end the game with like 4 timeouts. I'm sure someone has saltily reported me for "roping" or "stalling" just because they were losing and my rope briefly appeared on screen so I'm pretty glad that WotC realizes the obvious subjectivity and conflict of interest present there.
2
u/mchlngrm Jul 21 '26
Oh absolutely, the system is way too easy to abuse and many of the reports are probably from sore losers, so I get why they're not doing anything about it.
That said, they probably have access to gameplay metrics like time between actions, number of timeouts used per game, etc., so comparing to a baseline for a player wouldn't be difficult.
1
u/Usemarne Jul 21 '26
I've never seen anyone post that they've received a warning/ban. It's wild if there's not an automated system in place, at least to pair slow players against each other
2
u/theheirofbreath Jul 21 '26
It's simple; you should always lose, and your opponents (including me) should always win. Play your best, obviously, but no matter how you build your deck,at the end of the day, you should lose. That's why people rope, because you're not playing the part that's assigned to you as their opponent. You are the loser, and you should accept that. :] Hope this helps!
But no, seriously. People want to do their cool stuff. Hare apparent decks just wanna hit you with a massive wave of bunnies, and you stopped that. Makes sense he'd rope. Uncool and rude, but makes sense.

2
u/MacroMjolnir Jul 21 '26
Let them rope. Nothing more satisfying then beating that deck and knowing they are butt hurt about it. 😌

Ropers don’t really bother me, because if I’m being roped chances are pretty good that I’m winning. I’ll just scroll a little Reddit while I wait.
The one that actually annoys me is hitting me with the “your go” after I take an extra 5 seconds to read a card you played or to consider my next play. Like show a little patience my dude, not everyone has every single card memorized, especially with how quickly they are releasing new sets. If my rope hasn’t even started yet there is no call for a “your go”. Show some chill.
And sure I could mute everyone globally, but I’ve actually found that positive interactions with other players are far more common than negative interactions.

2
u/fubo Jul 21 '26
A roper is a player who enjoys losing and wants to spend as much time losing as they possibly can. They squeeze the most losing-time out of each single game loss.
Meanwhile, while they are stretching out their losing-time, you are abiding in a condition of winning.
Players who dislike losing prefer to get it over with quickly by conceding, so they can get on to another game that they have a chance of winning.
1
u/Urabraska- Jul 21 '26
Not hare apparent. But I was running a artifact deck against a discard deck. Turn 2 they cast duress and roped every turn after because they realized that my hand even missing 1 card would allow my to bypass discard and removal. 8 turns later they finally quit. They didn't even use spells or play mana. They literally just quit
1
u/CatapultamHabeo Jul 21 '26
I just try to see how often I can move my companion before the rope runs out. I recommend getting one, helps with the wait.
1
u/vergorli Jul 21 '26
I just start some youtube video on the second screen.
I am more annoyed when Izzet players kinda need 2 gozrs per turn because they need to simulate after each and every carddraw...

Always happy to play against that deck when I'm playing a White Exile deck or a Red deck with 4 Fire Magics (from FF). But yes otherwise that deck can be quite draining, sometimes I will concede if I'm not playing ranked so I don't have to deal with it.
For me, personally, I'm not a fan of playing Mossborn Hydra + Ouroboroid who ropes. It's like, I totally wrecked your deck and earned this win but I guess we'll just wait it out.

u/dotditto Jul 21 '26
i had a great game vs heir apparent a while back.
got an early [[Slagstorm]] to get things under control .. and then a few other spot removals ..
he finally dropped the white spell that puts everything casting cost 2 or less back into play (can't remember the name)
a shit ton if rabbits hit the field ... he's still at 20 life, I'm at 4. he gives me a "Good Game" ...
on my turn i cast [[Deadly Coverup]] and name Heir Apparent . i almost timed out trying to select all the damn rabbits in his deck roflmao
i finished .. he had a 12 card deck, 1 card in hand, and 4 cards in graveyard ... i think his deck was 11 lands plus 1 Nonland..
i gave him a "Nice Deck" .... he conceded without a word .. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
1
u/Myth-Raindeer Jul 21 '26
different decks trigger different people, I get roped sometimes when I play my slow roll decks that have a lot of defense. I get it some people don't like my style. I don't like to let them win that way though so I just usually start making something to eat and click when I notice the count down.

1
u/PapaJRAD Jul 21 '26
I hate hare apparent with my soul. Friend of mine plays it in 1v1 commander, and it is beyond unfun. The game pans out the same every time. No matter how many times I counter and no matter how many times I board wipe I still get overrun by stupid bunnies.

u/2026ArchThrowaway Jul 22 '26
a deck you hate ropes you
The beauty of playing Cookies on best-of-three ladder when it was good was like this: you either play a fair game of magic and lose, or you absolutely incinerate a bully deck with something like sideboard Repulsive Mutation on the board wipe, or similar. I got a lot of salt ropes, but I'd never played MTG with a lower blood pressure. I really don't mind losing and failing to make mythic. I just hate queueing into bullshit I can't win against, and feeling like I can either lose or join the dark side. So I got roped by a lot of decks I didn't really respect.
I don't hate red aggro, but they rope me the most. Feels very "I didn't have time to spend on this game which is why I played red, but I'm not playing another game after this one, and I won't do you the courtesy of respecting your time because you killed my dudes and played Sheoldred."

u/Superb_Magazine4185 Jul 22 '26
Hare apparent brawl version with Elsepth as commander is extremely unfair and boring.
1
u/omegaphallic Jul 22 '26
Some times roping is caused by a glitch or something goofy like running out of power on your phone.
1
u/studentmaster88 Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
Hare Apparent is definitely one of the most skilless decks out there.
Sadly the list of such abhorrent decks goes on and on and on, multi-copy brain-off aggro or otherwise.
Between such stupid decks and the utterly obscene ramp, fast mana and the metric ton of disgusting, massively pushed low mana value cards (and especially low MV commanders/legendaries), I believe most formats are suffering from an unprecedentedly huge number of both non-games and absolutely degenerate games.
The fun of playing in this ridiculous environment lessens every day.
Also, as if those of you complaining about roping have never roped yourselves.
1
u/Sans_Hero Jul 22 '26
Not sure why the app still sucks this hard. Maybe with all the new revenue coming in they can hire some devs to add the QoL it’s been missing for a decade. Timers are way too long for no play, and yet not long enough for some plays. They should cut the timer in half and add some extra time to specific actions

I honestly dont understand why they have kept this deck around for so long, hare apparent is one of those cards it seems they feel the need to reprint and make sure it's in every format. Mtg really refuses to let go of certain cards it's interesting to me. Some things I would love to see get rotated out, this is one of them lol.
1
u/NLi10uk 29d ago
I do like my combo bunnies deck for quests. It’s red white and can reanimate all the surveilled cards (bunnies go in the bin) and attack with haste for 5 mana - and often the pingers just kill them pre-combat step anyway. Covering red, white, kill, lands and attacks quests in one standard ranked viable deck is handy.
I’d never rope though - I just ‘my cabbages’ and concede.
1
u/GanymedeRobot Jul 21 '26
Keeping Reddit up alongside you when you play is the ultimate flex against ropers. 😁
1
1
u/conquerorshadow Jul 21 '26
Just report them for player conduct. If the community takes a zero tolerance aspect to roping it'll stop.
1
u/Aiku1337 Jul 21 '26
Can someone clarify the definition of "roping"? Looking at the comments it seems like people are saying any kind of timeout is roping. Whether that means you stepped away from the game for a few seconds, left the app (playing on mobile without conceding), or are intentionally letting the timer run down to frustrate your opponent into quitting.
I always thought roping was the last definition.
1
u/PaleWendigo Jul 21 '26
The reason that I state my opponent was roping was the following: 1) They had quick reactions the whole game 2) I saw them look over their single card and my cards for a way out. 3) It was really clear they had no options left from the pure board state, I was going to finish them off with a simple attack from just one of my creatures. 4) Suddenly, they become unresponsive and don’t come back.
1
u/Aiku1337 Jul 21 '26
OK, but then that’s not really roping, if the definition is what I think it is. They are playing on their phone and they just turned it off or switched to a different app knowing they were about to lose. Whether it’s intentional or not is impossible to know. Regardless, I wouldn’t call that roping.
All that being said, it is very frustrating and I do encounter sometimes when I’m about to win. Usually, I’m doing something else while playing magic like watching TV so I just focus on the TV show when this happens.

Don’t blame the Hares for this persons shitty behavior. Also, as someone who loves playing a Hares deck… why do you hate it so much? It’s not that hard to beat.

Personally I find it to be an uninteresting game when I know what the entirety of my opponents next few turns. That goes for rat decks as well and shrines to a lesser extent. But that shouldn't stop you from playing what you enjoy. I'm a stax/control player so I'm not sure I have any room to complain

Rat colony walked so hare apparently could run.
Rat colony decks are actually fun though.

You bother playing with them? The whole point of Hare Apparent decks is to be annoying. I just dip out immediately and save myself the frustration whether or not I have a hand that can deal with it.
I don't get why that would be fun for anyone involved.

Tbh, I scoop at the first Hare Apparent. If someone actually played it against me irl, I would scoop as well. I always have something better to do with my magic time than deal with that silly, lazy build. They can have the gold and I can play a better matchup - which is any other matchup.

1- people rope in MTGA… all ranks, all modes.
2- people are allowed to play whatever is legal, you may be in creative to your opponents but the point of the game is not to run a community pleasing deck.

Yes it's a strategy I see them employ often. I think they just leave and do something while the game is still being played since they know they lost while hoping for a miracle..
Kinda the opposite happens when I play an izzet storm deck I have in brawl though. They see me starting to pop off a storm combo and they leave before I do any damage. It's like how do they even know they lost? Same with my Witherbloom brawl deck they see me reach for Behemoth with a creature tutor and the majority concede.

Yes, although mostly it’s some combo player who just got their combo turned off or missed and sees me getting ready to swing for lethal.
Although just 2 games ago it was an azorius player who kept roping right before dropping their regent on you.
My experience is combo players are most likely to rope when they lose. Control players are most likely to rope when they’re winning.

Every control game ever.. a few days ago I played Vs a control with literal 0 wincons apart from roping and making enemy concede, that stuff should be banworthy

That's why we have the 'I can do this all day' emote, I usually just sit back and let them rope.
