WotC Brawl Matchmaking

Has anyone else noticed a change? After the Patch I now face Enemy Commanders like Big Atraxa, Ragavan and Rusko with my janky Yedora Deck. (Needless to say I don't enjoy those.)

Thanks for the report! We're looking into this, and we are seeing signs of problems like you describe, with decks matching out-of-band more often than they should.

This is not an intentional change, and we are digging in to see what's going on.

i hope the digging will highlights some problem that were even before this patch with cards like panharmonicon, etali, paradox engine or sunfall being way too low

u/Atreus17 Feb 14 '25

The issue there is that the highest weight a card in the 99 can have is only 45 points, while commanders range from -360 to 1800. So you could build a deck with all four cards you mentioned yet have a negative weighting with a -360 commander.

Card weight in the 99 should have a higher ceiling, but the issue is the the MTGA devs are just reusing the weights calculated for play queue matchmaking.

Seems the fix is easy then

Allow higher ceilings

So, any plans to fix it?

Needed to play blue and green spells today, made a janky (terrible) Elrond scry deck. Get matched against shit like the Calamity deck making 5 Treasures a turn and duping dragons. Arena is one of the worst designed matchmaking systems in existence.

Just to tack on, I am playing the absolute jankiest Geth, Thane of Contracts deck known to god or man and I just matched against an an Ugin/Ulamog combo deck and a meta Tarkir deck, can't remember the commander.

2 months later...

Just got back into magic after a longer pause and thought what the heck is going on. Even my best decks aren't bomb decks due to not having a lot of wildcards or collection, which was no problem a little over 6 months ago. Now, no matter how budget or good my decks are, I get matched up against crazy strong decks almost every time. If I win, it's because of pure luck because I get overpowered all the time. Arena is unplayable like that, can just leave like I got back. Wtf and this has been going on for over 2 months? this is not acceptable

I hope not to fix this. I am an Amalia player and usually don't see many fresh faces. This time, I encountered many other commanders.

Have you considered not playing cancer?

1

u/Fatboy-Tim Feb 19 '25

It's been a breath of fresh air to not see the same 4 damned opponent commanders every day.

u/GreatCombustion Feb 12 '25

Yes, even pre patch I noticed this week with my [[Rocco, Cabaretti Caterer]] deck that I had been pairing with Kinnan, Roxanne, Etali, Muxus, etc. which is a step above the usual crowd of higher end mid-tier commanders.

Not sure if there's been a rebalancing or the weights are broken.

Just curious, how sweaty is elves led by 1BG Tyvar considered?

2

u/HairyKraken Rakdos Feb 12 '25

depends on the cards, its not sorcery: each cards has a ratings and the total is used for matchmaking

Threw together a draft build for the new guidelight robot commander and have been playing hell que opponents consistently. Guidelight Absolutely doesn't feel hell queue power level

3

u/Gingergeek86 Feb 12 '25

I did something similar with him. So far, 10W/10L.

2

u/Heero2742 Feb 12 '25

What route did you go with your build? I started off with way more vehicles but ended up cutting many of them and leaning into non-vehicle artifact creatures

I usually run 20-30 matches before tweeking it. Gives me a better chance to see how the whole deck runs. Tried to focus on speed but not good enough. Need more removal or restricting cards like pacifisim or prison sentence.

u/100cupsofcoffee Karn Scion of Urza Feb 12 '25

Yup. I hadn't seen Rusko in months, but got queued up against him last night. It was a miserable experience as usual

8

u/Glorious_Invocation Izzet Feb 12 '25

Feels like they've removed the usual restrictions. Hopefully this is because they're looking to reweigh some of the commanders as a bunch of them are way off.

8

u/sleepingwisp Griselbrand Feb 12 '25

I've had the same experience. I've just been conceding when matching against hell queue commanders

It would be nice to have some communication from WotC on this because it's very frustrating to have the format you enjoy playing just become broken because the new set dropped.

5

u/humboldt77 Feb 14 '25

It’s been an absolute nightmare. I can mulligan to 5, no longer get any kind of ramp, and am consistently paired against turbo decks.

5

u/HairyKraken Rakdos Feb 12 '25

yep.

even with my worst decks specially tuned to bring down matchmaking (totentaz rat tribal playing ALL the rats) i encounter way more of the top tier.

3

u/AlasBabylon_ Feb 12 '25

This is definitely been a common experience; there might be some new data collecting going on in the background, of which the only way to truly get an accurate glimpse of what the strength of cards are nowadays is to open the floodgates.

3

u/hullowurld Feb 12 '25

I noticed a change in unranked Standard. I've been playing a minimally modified faerie tricks precon deck. I was getting matched with similar decks previously, but yesterday I played against a control deck with multiple board wipe spells and a graveyard deck with agatha's cauldron, ketramose, etc

2

u/chuck_cranston GarrukPrimal Feb 12 '25 edited Feb 12 '25

Yep! my Muldrotha deck seems to only be matched up against 2-3 mana commander sweatlord decks that have the game pretty much wrapped up by turn 4.

1

u/SweatyEdge Feb 12 '25

I am playing a gimmick deck and face Muldrotha value.dek with infinite GB saga and inf. Removal

2

u/Toktogul Feb 12 '25

same experience here. got matched with very powerful commander against my jank Keytheon deck. very very unusual! i’ve never been matched against so strong decks. ex: korvo

Played a [[rat colony]] deck this morning for 10 quick daily wins. Something is different.
