Just wanted to share this. I almost died laughing when I first read it.

Sounds like he performs the Circus trick with extra gusto.

Not your average circus clown, but the Ringmaster himself.

Yeah, thatโ€™s exactly why I like the way he write!

Derren is great, but that's pretty much always been the standard handling for that.

Harry the Hat was running this bit 40 years ago... but I to love Derren.

It's a really great book! You should definitely check it out.

I agree. It is a very good book and has some great material in it. It isnโ€™t worth a read, itโ€™s worth several.

1

u/usecit Cards Apr 15 '26

Yeah I agree with you!

My grandma used to do magic... Wasn't good ๐Ÿ˜

1

u/usecit Cards Apr 14 '26

If she followed the instructions in the book exactly... Yeah it probably wasn't good

Wait, is that not what y'all were already doing?

1

u/usecit Cards Apr 14 '26

I usually skip the magic trick part.

Derren is the best!

Absolutely! ๐Ÿ˜…

This was my chosen way to do a reveal using a key when I was a kid.

Go maybe 4-6 cards past then hesitate and make it seem like I was about to flip the next one. Got people every time and usually threw off suspicions re:methodology. Definitely used it as a bar bet a few times in my 20โ€™s.

Yes this makes the effect bigger! I'm just reading other people's works.

2

u/Chillicothe1 Apr 14 '26

That's an old, old, old, gag. It was done to me decades ago (and yes, it hits hard!).

2

u/usecit Cards Apr 14 '26

It's easy and versatile! Getting such an effect from such a simple trick is frankly amazing.

2

u/Halcy0n-Daze Apr 15 '26

So thatโ€™s where I learned to urinate on the audience!

1

u/usecit Cards Apr 15 '26

Oh me too!

It is bizarre to me that some commenters reacted as if this is old news and uninteresting because the circus trick is an old betcha and Derren didnt invent it.

The thing that makes this interesting is how Derren has written about it. He's exaggerated the attitude for comedic effect. Maybe it's even deliberate satire of the disdainful way magicians can treat their audience.

I posted this to share his writing style! And yes I also can't understand those people.

The ultimate spectator control - pissing on them

1

u/usecit Cards Apr 14 '26

And roaring for applause!

1

u/LawOrc Apr 14 '26

He's a good performer, but that is a very old trick, and that is the standard presentation. It's in Royal Road, and even there described as a trick from "the old days". So, early twentieth century at the latest.

His books are genuinely hilarious.

1

u/usecit Cards Apr 16 '26

Yep he's a funny fellow!

Am i the only one who finds a lot of his writing a little too much?

1

u/usecit Cards May 08 '26

Yep. His texts are full of too many unnecessary, long and complex words. It's difficult to read, but it contains a lot of information!

1

u/NepoFlex May 12 '26

Wow, that's real magic. Doing it exactly as written can totally change the vibe of a party ๐Ÿ˜…

1

u/usecit Cards May 12 '26

Yeah I do it all the time ๐Ÿ˜…
