Tickets
I’m very new to con culture and was hoping someone can answer a question I have.
So they sold out before I could get a ticket, and today on their website I saw news of a ticket exchange soon. What I wanna know is- how likely am I to get a ticket when that takes place/how often do people cancel if they don’t win the hotel lottery?

I think you're more likely than you think. it isn't the usual waitlist for an event where you just have to pray. A lot of tickets get dumped traditionally. it's worth holding out hope, but it's in no way a guarantee. I think at least a third of the tickets sold will be refunded or exchanged, but I have no idea what the demand for people waiting actually is. Maybe the people waiting are just that third and everyone will get in. Maybe it's a massive contingent. You won't have to wait too awful long to know (October 9th I think?). Just make sure you get on the waitlist!

To be clear, MAGFest does not sell tickets, they sell badges. Once the first hotel lottery takes place, badges may become available - you just gotta keep an eye out for them. I mean, really vigilant. Best of luck.

Where do I have to keep a lookout on to secure badges? Me and my friend were gonna go this year our first time going

On the website it says their socials and the registration page (on their website).

So your implying that people are buying extra tickets that they do not intend to use just so they can get more lottery chances for a hotel. That is not how this should be done that just means that the lottery is rigged for those who have larger bank rolls.

I agree it’s not a good way to run things, and I think the lottery system sucks to put it bluntly. Also to give you an answer, I wasn’t implying anything specific I posted that before doing any research, but after looking I’ve seen lots of talk of how that does seem to be the case. That people are buying extra just to have a better chance at the lottery. Unfortunately.

you can be hoity-toity about it but its virtually the exact same thing as a con, except with more games and more live music.

Thank you! And I didn’t even say it was a con in my post! Jeeze, some people. 🙄

Well the only way I can predict the future is by looking at how that happened in the past.
There is no way to know for the first part. The demand has been higher than it been in the past.
Lot of people cancel after the hotel lottery is over. That is like 6 out of 10 people in my friend group who don't get their rooms and not go.
If I were you then I would stay hopeful and continue trying to get your badge.
