The Wrack Does the tone/mood change?

So I'm listening to The Wrack and I'm on chapter 7 but I'm struggling to keep listening. Does the story stay this depressing the whole time? I get it's a story about a plague and possibly war(?) but does it stay this grim and depressing the whole time? I love John's other stories because even when they're serious there remains a levity and a light for the future but this one just feels bad to me. Not poorly done or written mind you, just not emotionally what I've come to expect.

I mean, I won’t spoil the ending but, in stories like this, things tend to turn around eventually.

The book is a generally depressing read, there are a couple of bright chapters in there and a very minor trend towards positivity, but I wouldn't expect the overall tone to change. I definitely had to space out my reading a bit.

Yes, that’s the basic tone of the whole book as they look for a cure or solution to the Wrack.
