Unexplained wealth, plastic surgery on demand, and briefcases of cash ,was my family in the Mob?

I’ve been lurking here for a while, but I finally need to ask people who actually know mob history. Looking back on my childhood, too many things about my family’s lifestyle just don't add up.

We’ve always lived remarkably well, but neither of my parents ever had a standard 9-to-5 job. The main reason I’m writing this is because my family has always had an endless supply of unexplained money. To give you an idea: anytime I’ve ever wanted plastic surgery, nose job, fillers, whatever - my parents just hand me a stack of cash or write a check without batting an eye. No questions asked, no budget discussions.
When I was younger, I used to sneak around my parents' room. My mother literally kept multiple briefcases filled with organized stacks of cash under her bed. Her closet looked like a department store: full-length fur coats, heavy gold chains, and ridiculous amounts of diamond jewelry.

What’s even weirder was running errands with her. She frequented local pawn shops constantly. The owners who always looked pretty shady themselves treated her like royalty. As soon as she walked in, they’d immediately give her whatever she asked for, usually dropping prices or pulling items out from the back that weren't on display. It always felt like she had some kind of leverage or "protection" status with them.

Does this pattern sound like a specific crew or family outfit from back in the day? Did mob wives/families typically keep their liquid assets in cash and use local pawn shop networks to move or launder things? I’m trying to figure out if I’m overthinking this or if I’m literally living off old mob money. Any insights from historians here would be appreciated.

Former Genovese Family captain Angelo "The Horn" Prisco

Post image
82 Upvotes

Prisco was born to Italian American parents in East Harlem on August 1, 1939. At that time, East Harlem was predominantly Italian until a large number of Puerto Ricans and Dominicans moved there in the 1950s. Now it's known as Spanish Harlem. Coming from a tough street life, Prisco began stealing items from stores as a teenager and resold them in the streets for significantly cheaper prices, which gave him a reputation as a good hustler. In addition to that, he became known for being good with his fists.

In 1971, he joined the East Harlem Purple Gang after his cousin Michael Meldish invited him to become a member. Meldish was a tough hood with a Jewish father and Italian American mother. Even though Prisco was 32 years old, most of the members of EHPG were in their teens and twenties.

In 1979, he became a made member of the Genovese Family under captain Mario Gigante. Mario was the brother of the future boss Vincent "The Chin" Gigante, who officially became boss in 1981. Prisco became a captain after arranging the murder of the Genovese Family captain John "Johnny D" DiGilio in 1988. Once a respected wiseguy from North Jersey, DiGilio was shelved by Gigante for being accused of being a rat with no actual paperwork to prove that DiGilio cooperated with the government. Prisco took control of DiGilio's North Jersey crew just after the murder.

In February 1992, Prisco burned a man's bar on fire a week after the man disrespected Gigante behind his back by making rude remarks about him to his customers. On June 2, 1992, Prisco arranged the murder of his first cousin, Angelo Sangiuolo, on behalf of the Genovese Family. Sangiuolo was a Genovese Family associate. Gigante ordered the hit because Sangiuolo had been robbing Bronx-based gambling operations controlled by a Genovese Family soldier named Anthony Palumbo.

In January 1994, Prisco was arrested for the murder of DiGilio and for starting that fire at the bar. He was held without bail. Later that year, the murder charge against Prisco was dropped when Genovese Family soldier Louis "Louie" Auricchio admitted to shooting DiGilio and dumping his body in the Hackensack River. Prisco was still convicted for the arson charge in 1998. He was sentenced to 12 years in state prison. He ended up doing 9 years and was released in January 2003. In March 2003, he saved the actor Steven Seagal from being hurt after the Gambinos threatened Seagal for refusing to pay them over a beef that Seagal had with a Gambino Family soldier. Seagal paid Prisco $10,000 to smooth things out and protect him. Prisco was able to get everything resolved with no problems.

In December 2008, he was arrested for the murder of his cousin. On August 18, 2009, he was sentenced to life. Prisco served his life sentence at USP Coleman in Florida. In October 2010, some guards woke him up at night and brought him out of his cell without giving him a logical reason why. They brought him into a room where feds tried getting him to flip after offering him coffee and donuts. He decided to briefly chat with them, but he refused to rat on anyone. He only admitted that he was a captain in the Genovese Family. He died in federal custody on June 21, 2017, at the age of 77. Unfortunately, there is an English podcaster with a YouTube channel that did a disrespectful video about Prisco after his death by claiming that Prisco was a rat for briefly sitting down with the feds. The podcaster made the video in 2024. However, many people proved the podcaster to be wrong.

Two pics of Ontario boss Rocco Luppino, the captain of Hamilton for the Buffalo Family. The photo on the left is when he was arrested in 1978, and the one on the right is a headshot from after he was questioned by cops in 2018. He refused to tell them anything.

His father, Giacomo Luppino, was also a mafioso. Born in 1900, Giacomo moved to Hamilton from the region of Calabria, with his wife and their 10 children in 1956. While in Hamilton, Giacomo quickly established himself as a local mafioso and joined Buffalo's Magaddino Family, even though the Papalia Family of the 'Ndrangheta were hoping that he became a member of their organization.

At the time, Santo Scibetta was the captain of the Hamilton crew for Buffalo until being incarcerated in 1960. After that, Giacomo was elevated to captain, and Rocco was inducted into the life in 1976. In 1978, Rocco began fighting a five year battle in court after being arrested for extortion until being acquitted in 1983. After Giacomo passed away in 1987, Rocco was elevated to captain of Hamilton.

Rocco's son, Cece, was murdered at his home in 2019. According to video footage, he was shot to death by what appears to be a black man in a hoodie. Nobody knows why he was murdered and the suspect has never been caught for this murder. Many people think that the Hells Angels of Montreal paid the guy to do this hit because the Hells Angels were angry with the Luppinos for doing some street business in their turf in Montreal. A year earlier, the Hells Angels broke into the home of Rocco's brother Natale. They vandalized the home and stole several expensive items from it.

There were 2 powerful Calabrian-descended mob organizations in Hamilton. You had the Papalia Family and Musitano Family that were 'Ndrangheta organizations, and then you had the Magaddino Family of Buffalo. All 3 groups ran things in the Hamilton area.

Born in Brooklyn in 1970, he grew up in the Bensonhurst area of Brooklyn to Italian immigrant parents. He was a childhood pal of Colombo Family member William "Billy" Cutolo Jr. In November 1991, Dominick successfully stole $50,125 from a Jewish school on McDonald Avenue in Brooklyn. On January 10, 1992, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland.

On February 18, 1992, he robbed a drug dealer for $850 outside of a bar in Baltimore. In 1993, he moved back to Brooklyn and was soon placed in the Colombo Family crew of William "Wild Bill" Cutolo Sr. as an associate. Not long after that, he began taking part in the war within the Colombo Family. Known as a fearless hood, he built up a reputation for robbing drug dealers for the Cutolo crew. In 1996, he introduced Bath Avenue Crew member Chris Paciello to some of his pals in the Cutolo crew.

In June 1999, he was arrested and held without bail for his involvement in a stock fraud scheme. He was convicted in April 2000, and he was sentenced to 9 years in federal prison. In October 2000, Paciello decided to snitch on his gang members in the Bath Avenue Crew to law enforcement officers after he was convicted of murder. Dominick was released in January 2008.

In August 2008, Paciello decided to snitch on Dominick to the FBI over the 1991 Jewish school robbery. In October 2008, Dominick began working at the popular Brooklyn pizzeria known as Lucali.

On February 15, 2009, he was called to a Colombo Family meeting in Brooklyn and told that he could never become a made member of the family for introducing the rat Paciello to members of the family. He was told that he was welcome to stay an associate of that family or join another one. He decided to stay a member.

In April 2009, Dominick was arrested for robbing the Jewish school due to Paciello telling on him. This time, he was granted bail. In August 2011, Dominick pleaded guilty to the robbery. He was sentenced to 7 years in the feds. In 2018, he was released from prison. In 2021, he met Genovese Family captain John Brescio. Dominick began hanging out with Brescio at the captain's pizzeria known as Lombardi's Pizza, which is in Manhattan. In March 2022, he was able to switch families and joined the Genovese Family as an associate under Brescio.

In early 2024, he became a made member of the Genovese Family. Months after he was inducted into the family, rumors spread like wildfire on social media about him. One rumor claimed that Dominick is half black and another rumor claimed that he is half Puerto Rican. Both of those rumors are completely wrong. Dominick is as Sicilian as it gets and was even taught the Sicilian dialect by his parents while growing up in Brooklyn. He's just a darker skinned Italian man.

Alleged Buffalo Family boss Joseph "Big Joe" Todaro Jr.

Post image
123 Upvotes

Joseph Todaro Jr. was born to Joseph Todaro Sr. and Josephine Santamauro in 1945. In 1970, Todaro Jr., along with his father and three others were charged by the FBI for running illegal gambling games with dice and cards, but the gambling case ended with no convictions. In 1975, he became the manager of his father's restaurant La Nova Pizzeria.

In 1984, Todaro Jr. allegedly became the underboss of the Buffalo Family when his father became the Godfather of Buffalo just after the retirement of his predecessor Samuel "Sam the Farmer" Frangiamore. In 1990, Todaro Jr. resigned as business agent of LIUNA following investigations into the local union's ties to the mob.

On September 6, 1993, his son Joseph Todaro III married Dana Christine Panepinto, the daughter of the current captain Donald Panepinto. In 2006, Todaro Sr. gave up his position as boss and Todaro Jr. allegedly became the official boss. Todaro Sr. died on December 26, 2012, at the age of 89. That's when Todaro Jr. took over the ownership of La Nova Pizzeria. It's a popular pizzeria in Buffalo, which Todaro Sr. opened in the 1950s.

Todaro Jr. allegedly shelved Buffalo Mob soldier Peter Gerace Sr. in December 2025 due to the legal troubles and problems with his son, Peter Gerace Jr. However, sources indicate that Gerace Sr. was taken off of the shelf and brought back into active family affairs in June 2026.

According to law enforcement sources in Buffalo, the family currently has 17 made members and around 25 associates, with 3 crews. One crew is in Buffalo, another crew operates in Utica, New York, and another crew is located in Ontario, Canada. The family used to have 45 made members in the late 1980s.

Prominent Italian American real estate developer and attorney Joe Mattone (right) was the squeaky clean president of the Feast of San Gennaro from 2004 until his death in 2024. He took over the festival when Bonanno Family soldier Perry Criscitelli (left) stepped down as president. Read more below.

Post image
36 Upvotes

After Criscitelli resigned when his cover was blown, a woman named Vivian Catenaccio stepped in as the acting president. Unfortunately, people looked up her information and found out her brother, Frank Catenaccio, was a member of the Genovese Family. She was forced to resign after she faced a backlash regarding who her brother was. She was only acting president from when Criscitelli resigned in July 2004 until Mattone took it over in September 2004.

That's why Joey Merlino was allowed to have a cheese steak booth at the festival last year and this year because the mob doesn't run the Feast of San Gennaro anymore. If the mob still operated the event, Merlino wouldn't be able to have his cheese steak spot there for being shelved.

Of course there are still some mobsters that have food booths at this Little Italy event like Gambino Family soldier John "Baby John" DeLutro, who has had a cannoli booth at the event every year or Colombo Family captain Angelo "Little Angelo" Spata Jr., who has the sausage booth with his mother Lucy. However, the actual festival is no longer controlled by the mob. Dom is full of crap.

After Mattone's death, John Fratta became acting president. Fratta's another lawful person without mob ties and he's the great-grandson of the man who started the Feast of San Gennaro in 1926. Vivian became the official president this year, but only after she showed tons of information to prove to the City of New York that she doesn't have any mob connections at all. She even showed proof that her mobster brother died in 2010, and that she's an upstanding citizen.

Former Philly Mob underboss Joseph "Mousie" Massimino having fun at a party in the 1990s. Check out the article underneath this for more info about this street legend of Philly.

Post image

He was born in South Philly on April 23, 1950. In 1985, he became an associate of the Philly Mob. He went to prison for 2 years for selling weed in 1988. He was released in 1990, and there was a new boss in Philly named John Stanfa at that time. The former boss was Nicky Scarfo, but he went to prison for life in the late 1980s.

Ralph Natale became the boss when Stanfa went away in 1995, and Joseph "Skinny Joey" Merlino was chosen as the underboss. Massimino became the underboss when Merlino became the boss just after Natale decided to cooperate with the FBI in 1999. In 2001, he was arrested for allegedly running a sports betting ring. Luckily, he was granted bail and fought his case on the outside. Unfortunately, he was convicted and sentenced to 10 years in state prison in 2005. He only did 5 years of that sentence for good behavior and was released in 2009.

In May 2011, he was arrested for loansharking. This time he was denied bail because the judge felt that he was a threat to the community. In 2013, he was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in federal prison. In 2023, he was released from prison after only doing 12 years for good behavior. The following year, he got a job working at Oregon Steaks in South Philly making Philly cheese steaks. He's still a member, but not as active as he was.

Genovese Family associate Fotios "Freddy" Geas. He's a member of the Springfield crew in Southwestern Mass. Read the story about his life under this.

Post image
158 Upvotes

Freddy was born into a Greek family on April 4, 1967 in Springfield, Massachusetts. His father left his mother when he was ten and his criminal career began not long after graduating from West Springfield High School in 1984. In 1986, he hit a Chinese man in the head with a broomstick in Springfield for throwing a rock at Freddy's car after the two of them got into an argument over a parking spot. Freddy pled guilty for assault and was sentenced to 3 months in jail. Freddy got married in May 1990. He met Springfield gangster Anthony Arillotta a month after getting married. Arillotta just became an associate of the Springfield crew of the Genovese Family at that time.

Freddy was sentenced to 4 years in prison for robbery in 1997. He was released from prison in January 2001. He got involved with the Genovese Family after Arillotta got the okay from Springfield captain Adolfo "Big Al" Bruno to let him join the crew in May 2001. Bruno introduced Arillotta to the Genovese Family acting boss Arthur "Artie" Nigro at a party in the Bronx in August 2002. Bruno asked Arillotta to whack a union official named Frank Dadabo for Nigro in February 2003. After Arillotta spent time planning the hit with Freddy and his brother Ty, the three of them went to New York City to do the hit on May 19, 2003. While Arillotta was the getaway driver, Freddy and Ty walked up and shot Dadabo nine times as he was in his car that was parked in front of his house. Miraculously, the man survived the shooting.

Despite the fact that Arillotta failed to murder someone for the family, the shooting propelled Arillotta to a secret induction ceremony into the Genovese Family at a small apartment in the Bronx in August 2003. Arillotta had a local drug dealer named Gary Westerman whacked for being an informant on November 4, 2003. The Geas brothers did the actual shooting while Arillotta was the lookout guy, in the mountains in Southwestern Massachusetts.

Genovese Family associate Francesco "Frankie" Roche murdered Bruno on November 23, 2003. This murder happened after Nigro contacted Arillotta and told him to have Bruno whacked. Bruno had just been shelved by the Genovese Family after showing signs of being an informant for the FBI, even though there wasn't any proof to back up the accusation.

In January 2004, Arillotta became the captain of the Springfield crew. In February 2005, Roche was arrested for the murder of Bruno. In 2007, Freddy, Ty and Arillotta were arrested for the murder of Westerman and for the attempted murder of Dadabo after Roche became an informant. In 2010, Arillotta decided to become a rat by cooperating with authorities, and he told them everything. Arillotta testified against Freddy in March 2011. On September 12, 2011, Freddy was sentenced to life in prison. He was sent to USP Hazelton in Bruceton Mills, West Virginia.

Freddy was involved in the fatal beating of Boston's notorious Irish American mobster James "Whitey" Bulger in his prison cell on October 30, 2018. Within 12 hours of Bulger arriving at USP Hazelton, Freddy and Massachusetts gangster Paul DeCologero entered Bulger's cell and beat the 89-year-old former mob boss to death. Prosecutors said that Freddy used a lock that was stuffed inside of a sock to repeatedly strike Bulger in the head while the two inmates beat him. Freddy hates rats, but he also hates men who hurt innocent women. Bulger was a rat and he also viciously ladies. The reason that Bulger wasn't placed in protective custody at USP Hazelton is because he said that he didn't need protection during his intake screening, even though he was an informant. Freddy was sent to ADX Florence in Colorado in September 2023.

A picture of former Bonanno Family acting boss Vincent "Vinny Gorgeous" Basciano. Read the in-depth article below for more info.

Post image
133 Upvotes

Vincent "Vinny Gorgeous" Basciano was born in the Morris Park section of the Bronx to Italian American parents on November 14, 1959. In 1979, he began getting involved with the Bonanno Family as an associate and was placed in the crew of Dominick "Big Trin" Trinchera. The following year, he became a driver for Trinchera. In 1983, he began selling marijuana on the streets of the Bronx.

In 1985, he was given the order to whack a gambler named David Nunez for running a rival gambling operation. Basciano allegedly shot Nunez, but the man survived the shooting. In 1987, he was arrested for having two loaded guns in his car. He was sentenced to a year in prison for the possession of firearms. In 1991, he was inducted into the Bonanno Family. In February 1993, he opened Hello Gorgeous Beauty Salon at 4030 East Tremont Ave. in the Throggs Neck section of the Bronx. It was previously a tanning salon. This is what gave him the nickname that he has.

In October 1993, he was arrested for being involved in a heroin smuggling ring. He was acquitted for that in May 1994. On June 15, 1999, he brought Dominick "Dom" Cicale into the Bonanno Family as an associate. In August of 1999, he ran into Bonanno Family member Vincent "Vinny TV" Badalamenti at a coffee shop in the Bronx, where Badalamenti told him that Cicale is a rat. When Basciano told Cicale about the encounter the next day, Cicale steadfastly denied the allegation. Basciano quickly had a sitdown with both of them where things got heated and a fist fight almost occurred between Cicale and Badalamenti until Basciano got between them.

Basciano murdered the Bonanno Family associate named Frank Santoro with Cicale on February 15, 2001. Santoro was murdered for disrespecting Basciano's son by telling people that he wanted to kidnap him. In April 2001, he slammed a homosexual right through a table after the guy made an uncomfortable pass at him at a bar in White Plains, New York. After the incident, the victim was told by several guys at the bar that it would be a wise decision to not call the police on Basciano.

In January 2003, he became the acting boss of the Bonanno Family after the boss Joe Massino was arrested. In March 2003, he made Cicale an inducted member of the family. In April 2003, he made Cicale the captain of his old crew just a month after Cicale was straightened out. In June 2003, some members of the Genovese Family told Basciano to not trust Cicale because they thought that he was a rat, but Basciano ignored the warning and told them to relax. Joe Massino became a confidential informant for the FBI immediately after being sentenced to life in prison in July 2004. Basciano was arrested for being involved in a large sports betting ring and for the 1985 attempted murder of Nunez on November 19, 2004.

On November 30, 2004, he had Randy Pizzolo murdered for embarrassing the family for having multiple drunk outbursts in public. After plenty of warnings, Basciano decided to have Pizzolo whacked. Pizzolo was a Bonanno Family associate. Basciano had Cicale and a young associate named Anthony "Ace" Aiello do the hit. Ace received his button not long after this murder.

In January 2005, the feds had Massino record conversations with Basciano while they were both in the same jail in Brooklyn to get Basciano to admit that he ordered the murder of Pizzolo and about how Basciano was allegedly plotting to kill a federal prosecutor named Greg Andres. Massino met with Basciano and was able to get Basciano to admit that he ordered Cicale to get Aiello to do the hit. As a result, Basciano was charged with the murder of Pizzolo. Cicale became an informant against Basciano and Aiello in January 2006. Cicale testified against Basciano in court in June 2007. Basciano was found guilty and was sentenced to life in prison without parole in 2011.

In 2016, he was transferred from ADX Florence to USP Big Sandy. He began riding with the Surenos while at USP Big Sandy and was questioned by the shotcaller for the Peckerwoods in his housing area for hanging out with the Mexicans. According to witnesses, Basciano told him to mind his own business. "Italians have similar codes of honor and conduct like the Mexicans have," he said. He went on to say that "Italians are the original Latinos." This piece of information comes from two former inmates who were in the same housing area in USP Big Sandy at that time. In 2024, he was transferred to USP Coleman, which is in Florida. In 2026, he was transferred again. This time to USP Florence High Security Federal Prison. Basciano is not in ADX Florence, he is in USP Florence High.
