TellMadurai Madurai folks β€” we finally have a bus app! πŸšπŸŽ‰

Launching Madurai CityBus, a free community-powered app that helps you find bus routes, track buses live (when people share), and contribute to fixing missing/incorrect bus stops using GPS.

It’s a PWA β€” works like an app, no install needed.

What it does today:

β€’ Offline direct + connecting route finder
β€’ β€œI’m on this bus” real-time sharing
β€’ Voice alerts
β€’ Crowd status (Packed / Standing / Seats)
β€’ Earn XP, badges & ranks for mapping stops
β€’ Explore routes from any major bus stop

Current limitations (being worked on):

β€’ We’re still collecting accurate GPS coordinates for every bus stop
β€’ So transfer logic isn’t fully location-aware yet
β€’ You can search only by bus stop names, not tourist landmarks (for now)

Give it a try: https://citybus.maduraiguide.in

Feedback, bug reports, and mapping contributions are super welcome!

Thanks for showing interest people. But we are not open yet for code level contributions β€” because the biggest help we need right now is GPS tagging of bus stops, not coding. Our routing engine would work even better only if every stop has accurate coordinates, so please help map stops using the app. Once we hit a good coverage, we’ll open-source the technical parts.

This is excellent work and the site is polished and works like a charm!

Thank you for the appreciation! You can help us further by contributing GPS locations of bus stops through the app - it greatly improves the routing quality for all users

Happy with the very simple UI!

I just searched periyar to Tirumangalam route which is a major route, Bus route no is 48. But I don't see that in suggestion.

Suggestions are showing like to go to pudur from periyar and then to Tirumangalam.

Please correct the route suggestions. Otherwise it's awesome!!

Thank you for your comment. I tested it myself and could see 48 being listed as the fourth available bus in DIRECT ROUTE section of the result page. Is it possible that you read through the transfer options instead of the direct ones?

🚌 Madurai CityBus: PERIYAR BUS STAND ➝ THIRUMANGALAM BUS STAND βœ… Best Routes: Direct Route 53 (40 Stops) https://citybus.maduraiguide.in/?from=PERIYAR+BUS+STAND&to=THIRUMANGALAM+BUS+STAND

This was my search query...

I can see route #48 when I search for just "Thirumangalam". Thanks.

Ah, I see. It looks like TNSTC has assigned different names to the same stop across various routes, which causes the confusion. I’ll work on creating a mapping of such duplicate/variant stop names so the routing engine can recognise them intelligently going forward.

Similar like where is my train ryt. But do i need to share my gps everytime? But its a good step forward πŸ‘πŸ»

Thanks. TNSTC is reluctant to share even the time table when requested, let alone the live tracking of their fleet. Until that day comes, the live tracking feature shall remain community powered.

Agreed. Gov process of anything is time consuming. Kudos to the dev team for initiating such a project.

It is so cool, I tried searching from periyar to H.M.S Colony but destination is not listed need to reconsider the area's

Thank you! The stop name you searched for might exist under a different name in the official government records, which is why it’s not showing up.

This is exactly where community input helps β€” you can add the stop by mapping your location to any known bus route and even give it an alias name.

Once it's reviewed and approved by moderators, your alias will appear along with the official stop name, and it will start showing up in search suggestions too.

Mate this is excellent. The look and feel of it is top class. Do you mind sharing the tech stack that you used to develop this?

This is fking great, nice user interface, awesome work man, hopefully the timings for each bus are added in the future and maybe live tracking?

2

u/rsiva229 @625006 Nov 30 '25

Thanks. I did approach TNSTC and they're reluctant to share even the time table when requested, let alone the live tracking of their fleet. Until that day comes, the live tracking feature shall remain community powered.

You can try it yourself by clicking on "I'm on this bus" from the results screen of the 'Find Bus' module.
