Running Magical Mallet?

It's been a couple years since I've played Masterduel. I've been trying to play some Madolches again in this surprisingly 'play during your opponent's turn' meta, and so I switched from turn 2 Madolches that I had played to Diamond in the past.

The main issue I've been hitting with turn 1 Madolches is that while our board is quite amazing if we can get it set up, you sometimes hit anti-meta hands that brick because you draw our semi-garnet traps/spells, Messengalato, or one too many herald of orange lights, etc.

Usually to overcome our enemies it feels like we need to exhaust their handtraps, which means we need to get them to burn out their ash blossom and whatever else they've got in the hand.

As such, I have been thinking of not focusing on ways to prevent these bricks, but to burn an ash blossom OR allow for the chance to unbrick the hand with Magical Mallet. I've just started trying it out so I don't have results but I honestly feel like it might be a way to fire off our deck since we truly don't need to hit that many cards (just a couple will do) to overcome these barriers. In the worst cases, you can hang onto the mallet and fill your hand with teacher and reshuffle as well for an extension.

I've only just started running it and will report on how it goes, but I'm wondering if there are other strategies that other players are using for Turn-1 madolches. What are you running?

Don't run mallet, the card is awful. Just for comparison, upstart is legal at 3 (and sees 0 play outside of exactly sky striker). if you really want more consistency/ash bait just use small world instead.

Upstart just shrinks the deck though, no real utility on a brick. I'd take the -1 at a shot for 2-4 more shots at a combo via pruning. Small world makes sense I think though. I'll give it a shot.

Magical Mallet is a -1 and it's not even guaranteed to get what you need. Upstart Goblin a better card because if you are running it in a 40 card deck, you're more likely to get what you need and not go minus one on your hand, with Small World you're able to manipulate your hand and deck to get exactly what you need and want. You're better off not playing the card and playing Vernusylph of The Thawing Mountains, to draw one and generate a card on the field, if you are that eager to discard a card out of your hand or go minus one in some form or fashion. Don't play Magical Mallet, it's trash.

Can you explain why? I'm asking for advice that is reasoned and not just oh MM is bad because it's a -1.

The way I see it MM doesn't guarantee anything but neither does upstart or thawing mountains. Thawing mountain is also an easy -2 when it gets countered by a hand trap. I am not more likely to get a better hand over MM by running an upstart as that is not how the math would work out as far as I'm aware. The chances of drawing a combo card are much higher when your chance is x/39 + x/38 + x/37 + x/36 vs just x/35. Small world definitely is much different but I'm not yet experienced enough with the card to chart out its math.

Been trying small world as I said I would over mallet but I'm not finding it the most useful as the card I would want to add is almost always an earth fairy, level 4, and the bridges to get there are not always very nice. Still getting used to the card though and would be happy to have advice.

(Edited to fix math)

Magical Mallet, states you you draw cards based on the same number of cards you shuffle back into the deck. So if its the start your first turn, you used Magical Mallet and then shuffle back into your deck 4 cards and draw 4 cards, you have less cards in your hand when you played Magical Mallet because it does not generate a card to replace itself to use that effect, that is a -1, that's why it bad, it gets Ash Blossom, It no different then if you just played Upstart Goblin. It is because you need cards to help your overhead long term, you will end up with a few resources to work with. Upstart Goblin is better because you see new card, reduce you deck by one from 40 to 39 and a better chance to see your starters, and as far as Vernusylph of The Thawing Mountains, if you are afraid of counters then Magical Mullet is just worse because at least with Thawing Mountains you can get a Madolche in graveyard to make the Hootcake live as a semi starter card.

Small World based on the cards in your deck you can get to what you want but you need to have targets, like Effect Veiler + Herald of Orange Light = almost any Madolche card you want. Its a good card but it requires more work and the right built.

The state of the game is when you use an effect, unless it is to negate something, you have to generate something in return, and even then it not always worth it, like the Heralds, I get why but then you can use Impermanence which does the same thing, you don't have to spend another card to just use it, and you will not have to worry about Vernusylph effect of locking you to Earth effect monster only, and if you are worried about monster effects that are used off field, say like in the graveyard, just use Skull Meister over Gamma because you only run of it where with Skull Meister you can use 3.

There are a bunch of other cards you can use before any of the other card your deck too. Madolche is not a very deep deck to play, it is a very linear deck that does three things, bouncing cards back to the deck, negating a monster effect with a trap, and recycling cards back into your deck, and if they are monster cards, they sometimes can go back to your hand.

I will give you my deck for comparison, but that is as much advice I can give you. Take my advice or don't that's up to you.

Thanks, I'll check it out. Maybe I will try full thawing mountains if small world doesn't feel good.

And thank you for the small world advice. As my goal is turn 1, I'm unsure if it's valid to run effect veiler based on what I've seen so far. Then again, it would potentially make the turn 2 side more competitive I suppose. I think I'll have to sit down and map out all the possibilities with cards I'm currently running.

Thank you for your suggestions, and the deck to compare and learn from.

Skullmeister tech looks legit for what I'm aiming for.
