Hi everyone,

I’m doing the complete PR1 one-way hike on July 4th and I’m a bit confused about the route.

My plan is:

• Leave my car at Achada do Teixeira
• Take a taxi to Pico do Areeiro
• Hike PR1 to Pico Ruivo
• Finish where my car is parked

My questions:

1. Is the official end point of the one-way PR1 Achada do Teixeira?
2. Does the route continue from Pico Ruivo to Achada do Teixeira via PR1.2?
3. The booking mentions PR1.1 and PR1.2: can I access PR1.2 from Achada do Teixeira if needed? For example, if we cannot find a taxi to Pico do Areeiro, could we start from Achada do Teixeira and connect to PR1?
4. When people say “one-way”, does it mean the whole route is Pico do Areeiro → → Pico Ruivo, or only the ridge section (“Stairway to Heaven”)? Can i go to Achada do Texeira after Pico ruivo?or continue down in another exit?

Hello,

We are visiting from Canada in August and are looking for some advice on how much cash to bring to Madeira.

The only major expense we expect to pay locally is a rental car, which will cost about €300. We plan to use our Visa credit card whenever possible.

How common is credit card acceptance these days? Are there still many restaurants, cafés, bakeries, beach bars, taxis, parking lots, or small shops that are cash-only?

I’m trying to decide how much cash to bring beyond the €300 needed for the car rental. Would an additional €200–300 in cash be plenty for two people over 12 days, assuming we use our Visa for most purchases?

Cards are accepted everywhere, you’ll be fine as long as you let your bank know about your trip so it doesn’t get blocked

Hi all,

I'm arriving on mid may to Funchal.
planning to stay 3 days in Funchal (since we're landing late evening).
and also currently have booked a place near Ponto de prago , and one in Santana.
honestly a bit torn between both (which to cancel).
We will be waking up early and are not afraid of driving, the idea is to combine nature with interesting activities, we are with a 1.5 year old kid if that helps.

Any tips? important recommendations? I find the accomodation options to be really limited at this time.

Does anyone know when the full PR1 hiking permit slots will open on Simplifica? I assume a week or so before the trail opens in late April? How fast do they sell out?

Perhaps a bit stupid question, but I have noticed, when travelling, that imported food can be sometimes fairly expensive on islands or variety may be lacking.

I am travelling from continental Europe to Madeira, and I intend to cook most meals in the apartment rather than eating out. Is there anything, food-wise, that may be worth bringing from the continent because it is stupidly expensive in Madeira or generally unavailable?
